Shopping in pyjamas

radiateforme · 20/03/2021 18:11

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

I never understand people who get home and get straight into their pj's either! For me that's strictly for bedtime, I'd be worried about someone popping round and seeing me in my nightwear !

Ijustlikedthename · 21/03/2021 09:57

Skanky and grim

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

I think no-one much cares who wears what in their own home...it is choosing to wear pjs outdoors to public places with other people that is the odd behaviour (unless emergency dash). And as for PP saying abput some shop having nice daytime range of pjs... great, if you are headed for a long stay in hospital & need to stock uo...but just sounds a bit off to me that someone could go shopping for pjs to wear them outdoors. Something of a want there...like attention seeking. I just think a few sandwichs short of a picnic...silly behaviour. I've never stood in a queue & admired (to myself) the pjs or wondered why...I've just thought 'lazy eejit'..

Joeblack066 · 21/03/2021 10:22

Pyjamas are for relaxing in the house, or going to bed in. Keep them away from the outdoors!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/03/2021 10:24

But they're sooo comfy!
I bought some harem trousers and floaty vest tops from the supermarket. In all honesty they are no different to pyjamas in terms of softness and comfort (my post lockdown stomach does not appreciate tight waistbands Grin ) but they are officially normal day clothes. I do tend to live in them right now. Pyjamas aren't so different except for the patterns/colours.
Everyone has an obligation to be clean I think and covered appropriately, especially in places that sell food but I can't see PJ's as especially awful unless it's matched with a lack of personal hygiene. The woman in full make up with her hair done, but wearing a onesie is unlikely to be grubby.

ImAlrightThanx · 21/03/2021 10:27

@lollipoprainbow

For me it's the fact that they probably haven't got any underwear on underneath the pj's and that's what I find distasteful. Something I wouldn't dream of doing I'd feel so self conscious and embarrassed !!
Does it matter though? Genitals are covered, and (shock) people do commando sometimes in their day clothes too! (not me- I'd feel weird! But people do).
CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 21/03/2021 11:10

I don't think you are being judgmental. I would support a shop that refused them entry.

It either is a sense of laziness (bad) or potentially a mental health issue (which by challenging it may help someone acknowledge it and seek help).

2late2fixate · 21/03/2021 11:15

@UrAWizHarry

I wouldn't do it, but being a judgemental arsehole regarding something which doesn't impact your life at all is far worse.

People wandering around in their pyjamas affects everyone. It affects society as a whole. It's disgusting.

Get fucking dressed.

Caesargeezer · 21/03/2021 11:16

People can wear what they want, but if you were in your pjs in a shop I’d assume you hadn’t showered or cleaned your teeth.

CounsellorTroi · 21/03/2021 11:17

If you haven’t got dressed that suggests you haven’t washed either. But then again people who have dressed might not have washed either.

dreadfuldays · 21/03/2021 11:18

I totally get people who've been out of hospital or elderly and frail that I've seen out and about in slippers and dressing gown once in a blue moon but I don't understand a whole family, couples and friends going out in pj's to supermarkets. Attention seeking, idiot looking and bizarre people. I'm judgemental yes, I roll my eyes when I see them but where's the thin line?Are we going to start seeing people in bath robes with shower caps on holding rubber ducks next?

I honestly don't ever judge people for what they wear as long they are appropriately dressed. Topless with a hairy chest in a super market? Wear a damn T-shirt! Bikini top on a plane, wear a cardigan ffs. A white gown to someone's wedding ShockShockShock and finally fluffy slippers and pj's to a supermarket, that's just grim!

You do realise that a lot of people in their usual day clothing don't wear underwear either.
WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/03/2021 11:21

Grim, very naff and a certain demographic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/03/2021 11:22

Lazy and slobby. And yes, I judge.

XenoBitch · 21/03/2021 11:22

As I said upthread, I have been sleeping and going out in the same clothes for several days straight.. no washing. My mood is very low and even taking my socks off seems too hard. So those people in the shops in their PJs could be squeaky clean, and someone in clothing the total opposite. The judgements on this thread is horrible. Way to make someone who feels worhtless even more so.
CounsellorTroi · 21/03/2021 11:27

I’ve genuinely accidentally worn my slippers out shopping once. DH and I went out to B & Q and I got out of the car and looked down to see fluffy blue mules.

gingganggooleywotsit · 21/03/2021 11:30

@ConeHat

I judge. Silently in my head. In my head I'm making lots of silent judgments. It's what humans do. I'm not going to stand, scream and point at them. But if I saw a mate out in their Pjs with a fully loaded trolly shuffling about in bed socks and fluffy slippers, you bet your life I would judge.

If its 9.55pm and you have a basket and a coat over your Pjs and trainers I could get it. But £100 worth of shopping at 11am in a nightgown and fluffy slippers. Tell me. How is putting trainers and a coat on harder than slippers and a night gown?

Yes you do you. Well done. Fil gets naked at 6pm.every night. Want to see him " you do you, I will do me" in Tèsco? Would you fuck like to see that.

Imagine hes relaxing naked, all 20 stone of him, like a hairy ape when mil says "we have run out of milk, go grab some quickly and while your there get this months shopping love"

Also genuine question why dont men go out in their Pjs? Most men wear boxers to bed. Why dont they go shopping in night wear?

This is so true I’ve never seen a man in pjs only women! Funny don’t know why?
CounsellorTroi · 21/03/2021 11:33

@XenoBitch I’m sorry. I do understand that feeling low can make doing anything feel like climbing a mountain. It was not my intention to make anyone feel worthless. I hope you feel better soon.

SpilltheTea · 21/03/2021 11:58

I wouldn't do it but some of these outraged comments make me laugh. I couldn't care less what other people wear.

Nocar · 21/03/2021 12:22

It's attention seeking. Most of the people I have seen doing it have full face of make up. 'Nice' dressing gown, fluffy slippers etc. not just usual scruffy old stuff you might actually sleep in.
If you're that one dimensional, that the most interesting thing about you is that you shop in your pyjamas, then thanks for the heads up to avoid at all costs.

VeganVeal · 21/03/2021 12:24

As I find its the lower order that go shopping in their nightwear it does me a favour as I know who to watch out for and I always make sure my purse is safe, although to date I've not seen this sort in M&S so its not often I encounter them

Pyjamas are nothing like loose tops and harem trousers!
NextDoorKnobber · 21/03/2021 12:28

What a lot of thoughts about this subject.

I've never actually seen anyone in real life either shopping or dropping children off at school wearing their nightclothes.

I think there ought to be a special place in Hell reserved for people who call pyjamas "jammies", though.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/03/2021 12:31

What's the difference then? Both are soft, stretchy material, loose fitting, not skimpy. In terms of fit and comfort they are similar - the difference for me is that my harem trousers are black and pyjamas are covered in little Moons and stars or pink hearts.
