Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

What's the difference then? Both are soft, stretchy material, loose fitting, not skimpy. In terms of fit and comfort they are similar - the difference for me is that my harem trousers are black and pyjamas are covered in little Moons and stars or pink hearts.
Difference is pretty apparent even without a dressing gown and slippers.

Absolutely it’s slovenly. If you can’t be bothered to wear actual adult clothes in public, don’t bother leaving the house. I don’t want to see you.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 21/03/2021 12:43

Equally if not worse are parents to take their children to school whilst in pyjamas, usually in their car a distance that can be walked.

CounsellorTroi · 21/03/2021 12:43

I’ve got one of these for loungewear.

avon.uk.com/products/blue-velour-lounge-set?_pos=1&_psq=Loung&_ss=e&_v=1.0

It’s as comfy as pyjamas but I don’t wear it to bed. Might go to the local shop in it though I haven’t yet.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 21/03/2021 12:51

I remember as a teen in the 90s seeing a woman walking down the street in slippers and housecoat draw a crowd of people asking if she was okay etc. It's a modern trend I don't get.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/03/2021 12:53

That second outfit isn't better than the first one or more 'respectable'. The pyjamas are less hideous imo

Suywat · 21/03/2021 12:54

Precisely. I still assume escape from the local car home or running from a house fire. There can be no other explanation.

I'm not saying either is "better" than the other, I'm saying they look vastly different to each other and it's very obvious which one is pyjamas.
Doingitaloneandproud · 21/03/2021 12:56

I hate seeing it, each to their own but i would assume the person hasn't washed or showered before going out and their bed clothes are getting dirty. I think it's just lazy to not get washed and throw on some clothes.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/03/2021 13:00

Well yes, I'm not saying they don't look different. Day clothes aren't all the same either. I'm just pointing out that from your pictures one option isn't intrinsically better than the other - they are both covering the body appropriately for being in public.

Actually, if you'd told me the second option were also pyjamas I would have believed you.
I think being covered and clean is what really matters in a food shop. Everything else is just a question of taste.

It tells you everything you need to know about them and their attitude towards life and by extension their attitude towards you. No excuses.
Moonface123 · 21/03/2021 13:02

I work in a busy supermarket, this it's not tolerated, we are a business, not a hospital.
I personally think it's sheer laziness, and looks awful. You just have really low standards to leave the house in that state.
What if all staff couldn't be bothered to shower and dress.?
As soon as l get up l shower and get dressed, work or no work , l could think of nothing worse than slobbing around in pyjamas all day, and my two teenagers are the same.

Notquiteworried · 21/03/2021 13:03

I think there's a bit of a trend around getting noticed and wanting to be noticed, and wanting people to comment /confront so they can 'defend' their choices as loudly and publicly as possible, extra points if it ends up recorded and on SM or the paper, and shames someone else publicly into the bargain . Just profile raising.
Wearing pyjamas outside the home is just a way of doing that, it doesn't really do any harm unless they're fronting up to people who happen to glance in their direction, when people are forcing confrontations in those circumstances, then it's a problem, which I've seen happen.

Bit rough ‘round your way?
PolarnOpirate · 21/03/2021 13:05

It has that vibe of, the ringleader (outspoken) of a clan does it, all their hangers on take their lead and do it too, and they couldn’t possibly express a different opinion than ringleader, and before you know it it’s a whole big thing. Luckily for me that sort of dynamic forcefully repels me.

Well, you literally asked for the difference between harem trousers and pyjamas and said that in effect, there wasn't one. There quite plainly is! They are completely different styles! Which makes sense because they are intended for completely different purposes and situations, even if they are both comfortable.

And the second outfit absolutely is more respectable than the first if the purpose of wearing it is to go to the shops in broad daylight. May not be to everyone's taste, but it's clearly daywear. You may not like it, but at least the person wearing it got dressed!

Likeandsubscribe · 21/03/2021 13:08

Xenobitch I'm really sorry you are going through a hard time Flowers

I am sure most people on here , if they knew your circumstances, would applaud you for being up and about and doing the shopping.

I don't think anyone on here means to criticize anyone with serious depression, dementia, or a very sleep deprived mother for example, who nips out for nappies late at night.

A close family member of mine suffered from a very serious mh condition and when she was down she found it very hard to function, and getting up and dressed in the morning was almost the hardest thing for her to do as it meant facing some difficult issues during the day. She was encouraged to do so as part of her treatment but it's a difficult thing to overcome witnout proper support.

ConeHat · 21/03/2021 13:12

Where does be kind start and stop? Honestly. What if you saw someone with their hands down their pants scratching their genitals? It's not illegal is it? I dont want to see someone scratch their fanny or dick then pulling out their hand to pick up and look at the expiry date on the bread then put it back.

It's not illegal. Its plain minging. I dont look on and think ah bless em, doing them.

Mumsnet had a thread about a postman shitting in their garden. 50% of the replies had no issues/ non issue replies.

I can only conclude that 50% of mumsnet go out in Pjs and shit in the street.

Notquiteworried · 21/03/2021 13:14

@Suywat

No more than anywhere else I don't suppose. I've lived all over the place, the one thing that is different here than in other places is lack of investment in the area and the police being conspicuous by their absence. It's a 'thing' when the police are spotted round here, because they're so rare.
That observation (about it all veing for attention) is made from living and working all over the country, but alas as I'm only a working class cog, it may be that the areas I've worked and lived are seen as 'rough' as they contain the working class?
Pyjamas is just one thing, another apparently is wearing shorts in snowy and below freezing temperatures.

If we ever get a signature function for our posts here, this will be mine. Thank you.

(Link for the shitting postman? Sounds like a children's song gone horribly wrong.)

I live in the middle east and often catch sight of a pyjama leg sticking out from an Abaya in ops meetings. Doesn't bother me. It reminds me of a story in a Ramona Quimby book where she wore her pyjama to school under her clothes and started off feeling like a cozy bunny and almost ended up passing out from being so hot! I think this is a little like earpiercing babies. A bit of class stuff going on and a bit of moral indignation. It IS weird and a new phenomenon but if they look happy and are wearing masks and not wiping boogies on the bananas I am largely indifferent. I've seen many a Boden clad kid bogeying bananas Grin

Kindperson · 21/03/2021 13:26

Shirtless men on the first sunny day of the year however Envy yuck. Rather a bogey than a curly hair on my nana thanks

B33Fr33 · 21/03/2021 13:30

Laughing myself silly at the judge comments on here. But yeah. A whole family out shopping. That's pretty shitty in itself. Who would do that anyway? Let alone during 'stay at home' orders.

Stratfordplace · 21/03/2021 13:31

I’m with you, I judge. I was in A&E in the week and the amount of people booking in in their dressing gowns and nightwear left me jaw dropped. Almost like they will be admitted immediately. They walked into A&E but just in their pj’s etc. One then wanted a sick bowl and promptly walked around with it full, wouldn’t sit down or go into the bathroom. Minging cows!

Turning up to A&E in your pyjamas is surely a bit different....
