Shopping in pyjamas

I know, this has been done to death, but just went to the supermarket and saw a full family out shopping in their pyjamas. It's the first time I've actually seen a fully grown adult out in a full set of pj's (dressing gown, pyjama top, pyjama bottoms, fluffy socks and sliders). More curious to know exactly why people find this so unacceptable, because essentially they are just clothes. For me it is just slovenly and lazy. But maybe I'm being too judgemental. Opinions?

It's lazy. It's really easy to get dressed into something simple before you leave the house. No need for dressing up to the nines but non bed-wear is manageable for most.

Sometimeswinning · 21/03/2021 01:02

Why do you care so much about what other people wear? Just do you. None issue thread.
If it was a non issue there wouldnt be any replies to the op! You'd not comment either, but you did.

QueenPaw · 21/03/2021 01:11

Only done it a few times and never to the supermarket
Garage at 11pm, had run out of milk so put a big coat on and shoes to nip there and back
Emergency vets twice because the cat likes to do a dying swan act ALWAYS out of hours
Oh and for deceased cats. I collect them and take them to the vet to be scanned. Often get messages to go v late at night so usually just put a coat over whatever I'm wearing

quollaa · 21/03/2021 01:24

I just can't see how that could bother someone so much to say they judge them and think they are unhygienic gross and disprespectful. Does it matter to you this much?

ChuckyHereToPlay · 21/03/2021 01:27

I sometimes will wear pj bottoms to nip literally across the road to tesco but I've always worn a proper top and shoes. I hate seeing slippers worn outside, it's really dirty.
I will usually wear pjs/lougewear anytime I can, I just feel more comfy and relaxed. I don't wear pjs to bed though, I have specific t shirts for that.

Sinistersister · 21/03/2021 01:37

I work in a supermarket across the road from a hospital. We have loads of shoppers In pyjamas, often they’re people who have loved ones brought into/taken to hospital at ungodly hours and are picking up supplies for the patient. Other than that it’s usually small kids in onesies. I have done it at least once years ago when my very young DD needed medicine and people definitely stared. Just because you see people doing something once doesn’t mean they’re doing it all the time.

AdoraBell · 21/03/2021 01:44

I can’t imagine going out in pyjamas. I’ve once taken DD2 out in her pyjamas when she was ill, only to a pharmacy not shopping.

SionnachGlic · 21/03/2021 02:13

Near me there is this one girl, late teens & has finished school, who has the fake tan, full make up, fake eye lashes, hair done, nails done, lippy on...could be headed for a nightclub she's that made up .....but she out in the pjs with the fluffy slides/mules on...I think she just looks ridiculous waltzing around like that..how hard is it to pull on a pair of jeans? I totally get a once off dash to supermarket with pj top under zipped jacket for emergency such as no nappies or baby formula...but I would still pull on jeans as it takes 2 seconds. I think it just looks chavvy to be out in your pjs & if even if I tried to give the benefit of doubt to excuse it, I def couldn't when the wearer has a full face of make up & trying to look glam otherwise. Just sad imo..

sneakysnoopysniper · 21/03/2021 02:22

I wear a baggy kaftan around the house . For those who dont know a kaftan is a long loose dress which comes from the middle east. On the few occasions I have to go out (taxi door to door) I just throw a coat on top. I dress for my comfort. I wasn't put on the earth to please other people or to cater to their standards of sartorial elegance.

DeRigueurMortis · 21/03/2021 02:27

@Northofsomewhere

I work in a supermarket right now and keep seeing the same woman in always wearing PJ's, a fluffy dressing gown and slippers, it doesn't matter what time of day it is she's always in PJ's.

I just think it's odd for someone to wear sleepwear anywhere except your own property, maybe as far as the curb if you've forgotten it's bin day.

I also think people forget it's my place of work, I have to dress appropriately and I expect customers to dress the same (same with inappropriate summer clothes, I don't want to see topless hairy sweaty men either) when out and about. I wouldn't go to the dentist or hairdresser in my pjs so why do people go shopping wearing them.

Essentially the above.

In a social setting it's a sign of respect to those around you to dress appropriately.

As much as I don't want to encounter people on the nightwear they have sweated in, neither do I want to see people in sweaty gym gear or half undressed because it's a sunny day.

I honestly don't get the PJ's thing. FFS why do you want to been seen in bed clothing you've spent the night in or alternatively go bed in nightware you've been wearing all day?

If it's comfort you're after just buy and slip
on a pair of jogging pants/yoga trousers and a sweatshirt?

By all means wear what you like at home.

I would however say the worst offenders are topless overweight sweaty men with builders bum shorts.

I'd take 5 PJ families over one of these when I trying to buy food.

SunscreenCentral · 21/03/2021 02:29

Meh. People in pjs - it’s not like you’re losing your rights to protest. And you can can just come here to Aibu anyway so it’s ok

DeRigueurMortis · 21/03/2021 02:31

@MrsTulipTattsyrup

I’m generally very non-judgmental, but this is one thing that turns my stomach. I can’t picture a scenario in which you’d get up, wash, dress in clean pyjamas and go out (why? Why would you? There are loads of comfy clothes available which aren’t pyjamas) so my assumption is always that this person has got out of the bed they’ve been thrashing around in, sweating, all night; not washed; is very unlikely to be wearing underwear under their flimsy pyjamas, and even if they are, they’re not clean; and then decided to go somewhere there’s food that other people have to buy.

I’ve stood behind someone in her pyjamas in a supermarket queue and let’s just say it was evident to my eyes and nose that all these things were true for her.

It shows a massive lack of respect for oneself and everyone else around you.

However, if you have got up, washed, put your knickers on, dressed in pyjamas and gone out to shop, it’s just attention seeking twattery, and doesn’t make you look alternative or A Bit Mad, you just look like a fool. Seriously, nobody’s impressed.

Wins the thread Grin

Downunderduchess · 21/03/2021 02:39

I wear pyjamas as day wear around the house in cooler weather. Give not a toss what anyone might think. Similarly I don’t care if people go shopping in their pjs.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/03/2021 03:07

I'd love to go shopping in my pyjamas but it's the thin end of the wedge - I'd never wear proper clothes again. That's probably not a good thing.
I wouldn't assume that someone in PJ's was dirty - lots of people have daytime PJ's and get changed again at night. Pyjamas get put in the wash after one wear, but jeans often don't and so someone in nightwear could realistically be cleaner than the person in jeans, who isn't getting judged.
Slippers outside of the house and dressing gowns in public are minging though. PJ's in Tesco are passable if you have proper outdoor shoes on and a jacket and if your PJ's are full length trousers and not a pair of French knickers.

quollaa · 21/03/2021 03:28

@DeRigueurMortis wins the thread seriously. The clothes I wear in the day go to seriously ill people or Covid positive people so get dirty and infected so when I come home o take them off at the door and put on my jammies. I don't go out in them but they are way cleaner than my daily clothes are any day. If you knew where my clothes had been you would wish i was wearing PJs 😂 ( I change as soon as I can but it's not always possible)

MrsPworkingmummy · 21/03/2021 07:07

Urgh, I really judge. it gives me the impression of the wearer being smelly, unhygienic, junk-food eaters, don't work, swear a lot, don't role model to their children, mouldy and dirty house ...

I'm a teacher and have had many parents over the years drop off their children in pyjamas. The judgement above is formed based on my understanding of those families.

PeggyHill · 21/03/2021 07:18

I'm not bothered about what others are wearing at wearing at the supermarket, as lomg as it isn't obscene. PJs don't come across as obscene to me, but perhaps they do to others.

mummywithhermini · 21/03/2021 07:27

I have a mate who's been known to drive to nursery in bare feet to collect her dc GrinI find it strange but she's happy and harming nobody so I just have a giggle with her about it.

I'm sorry but I am distracted from the clothing issue by the fact that you collect deceased cats.

For all the time it takes to put on clothes it seems mental to me to wear your pjs in public Confused. It might have been for Red Nose Day or charity or something you never knowSmile. Or just lazy 😬

QueenPaw · 21/03/2021 09:40

@Likeandsubscribe it's so they don't end up either being never collected, taken by the council and not scanned or other grim stuff. Basically trying to reunite missing cats with owners (I do occasionally collect alive ones but not often)

lollipoprainbow · 21/03/2021 09:46

For me it's the fact that they probably haven't got any underwear on underneath the pj's and that's what I find distasteful. Something I wouldn't dream of doing I'd feel so self conscious and embarrassed !!
