Would you want a job like this? (Part time, term time)

I'm tentatively thinking about taking on an employee but I keep going back and forth between thinking someone out there would love it or that no one would.

Job details:

3 hours per day, Mon-Fri, 9:30-12:30
£20 per hour (£1,200 per month)
4 weeks paid holiday per year but can take all of school holidays off unpaid if desired
Mostly admin but would need to pass background checks as would be handling sensitive info
Must be very good with both numbers and people (especially people!)
Potential to progress

I know it's a decent hourly rate but because it's only three hours a day it still only amounts to £1,200 per month, so I'm not sure if many people would want (or could afford) that. I need someone with qualifications too due to the nature of the business. Is it crazy to try to find someone for this? Or should I wait until I can take on a full time employee?

YABU: It's crap
YANBU: There's someone out there for you (maybe)

Me! Pick me!

wowthisisstrange · 16/03/2021 21:29

I’d 100% do that - brilliant timing in the morning so you can get on with the rest of your day and good pay for 3hrs a day! I reckon you’ll have people lining up for it

Bythefire90 · 16/03/2021 21:30

You sound like you’re gonna be a fab employer and I’d work for you in a heartbeat with those hours.. East Lancashire way if you need me Wink

HotPenguin · 16/03/2021 21:32

Yes, lots of people with young kids who want to carry on working but still do the pick ups etc would love that job.

WombatChocolate · 16/03/2021 21:34

It sounds good and people would barely pay any tax so get to keep all of their earnings., plus still quality possibly for child benefit or other benefits too if their household circumstances qualify.

Do bear in mind extra costs to yourself as employer.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 16/03/2021 21:39

Can you afford to pay £20 an hour plus holiday pay, sick pay if you offer it, pension and NI contributions etc? That's a lot of money to pay someone for very basic admin.

Plus they'll get more than 4 weeks annual leave - your 28 day calculation is correct but as they only work five days a week it works out as 5.6 weeks off work, not four weeks.

Whyareblokesonhere · 16/03/2021 21:40

the critical part for me is to engage someone with you why and your long term aspiration, from the sounds someone with young kids right now that wants to increase hours in time would be the stereo typical. fit but is there anything you can do, from early on to incentivise them in the success, I. e. like giving them a profit share scheme (I. e. John Lewis) if there is no profit then there is no bonus but equally making decisions for the long term success is critical to getting the rewards later on, you could structure this out or do something very different but that offers the additional incentive (not just salary promises)

madmumofteens · 16/03/2021 21:40

Sounds perfect to me 😋

ivfbabymomma1 · 16/03/2021 21:42

I'll be there Monday morning Grin

CantSayJack · 16/03/2021 21:48

People will bite your hand off for a job like this, sounds ideal and too good to be true!

TheMagicDeckchair · 16/03/2021 21:50

I work in a very small business looking after the finance side, VAT returns, etc and various other bits and pieces (health and safety admin, some compliance, whatever needs doing). I am reasonably well paid, but I have no enhanced benefits such as additional holidays or any enhanced employer pension contributions etc. So although my salary looks high, in a larger company with more generous benefits, a lower salary would be comparable.

If you’re employing someone like me then £20 ph isn’t unreasonable, my hourly rate isn’t far off that and I’m in a cheaper part of the country. In a small company you are paying for someone to be flexible, trustworthy, to take on work that isn’t always within their remit, and to have the initiative to get stuff done without supervision.

You’ll have no shortage of applicants. I think your biggest challenge will be finding someone with that small company mindset.

RoomAtTheEndOfTheWorld · 16/03/2021 22:08

I do a similar-ish sounding role. My job is admin for a reasonably well known high street retailer. I have no specific skills or qualifications and you wouldn't need to in this kind of role.

I normally do 4 hours a day, 5 days a week to fit around school hours, although lately I have been doing overtime (9-3 mon-fri)

Previously it was office based but since Covid WFH with flexibility to carry on WFH or back to office when safe to do so.

This has worked great for me (prior to DS starting school I did this role full time as Nursery was longer hours, I don't have many childcare options so going part time within school hours was the best option) and I feel like I have a good work - life balance.
I get paid less than half of what you are offering an hour, but still get the same amount of annual leave days per year as I did when I was full time, because I do the 5 days, it's just my annual leave days are only 4 hours obviously.

You will get hundreds of applicants for this OP. Almost every mum friend I have would bite your hand off, I think you could halve the wage you are offering and still get crazy amounts of interest. Good luck! Smile

Am I missing something? I make it £780 per month, not £1200...

3 x 20 = 60
X 3 = 180
X 52 / 12 = 780....

What am I missing??

sweetnessnfight · 16/03/2021 22:22

So many SAHM's would love that!

Happynewtier · 16/03/2021 22:23

Sounds like my dream job. Part time/term time jobs that fit in around school runs and childcare are like gold dust... Especially for £20 ph! I work part time around the kids, doing a supervisory role in a supermarket. It involves working all kinds of long hours when I have childcare covered, so evenings, weekends are standard... I feel like I'm constantly at work and am lucky to even get £800pm. I hate it, but cannot find anything mon-fri that is available for term time only.

EmJay19 · 16/03/2021 22:27

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo ah yeah 🤣🤣

Can you guess how many days I want to work? 🤣

gumball37 · 16/03/2021 22:30

I'd absolutely love it

Audacity7 · 16/03/2021 22:34

When you say job boards do you mean on mumsnet? Or job sites ? I would love a role like this and I’m in Sussex.

Dixiechickonhols · 16/03/2021 22:34

You will get someone with a financial qualification if you are paying that sort of money and attractive hours particularly if industry isn’t known for part time hours. I had a similar set up at a local small firm in a professional role - part time hours and couple of miles from home very attractive to me. Yes hourly rate lower but I’d have had to work full time and commute for that.
Short hours like that won’t need term time only unless children very young age. The part time hours were very attractive to me as I had a tween - no issue leaving for few hours in holidays they’ll probably be in bed anyway then do something in afternoon.

Dixiechickonhols · 16/03/2021 22:36

Might make sense to offer lower pay rate and pay for training if qualified would assist you. Clause to repay if the leave in x months of qualifying.

greengrey · 16/03/2021 22:37

Where do I apply?!

I only get £200 more a month for full time, this job would be the dream.

JoyOrbison · 16/03/2021 22:37

Me me me me!!

Yorkshire area I'll crack on with it!!!

Understandingnotignorance · 16/03/2021 22:38

I clicked yabu by accident to explain the 1%😂 I know so many people who would love a role/hours like this-me included!

BackforGood · 16/03/2021 22:40

You'd get a LOT of really quality applicants for about £13ph.
£20ph is really a lot of money when the hours are just so perfect for so many people.
