Would you want a job like this? (Part time, term time)

I'm tentatively thinking about taking on an employee but I keep going back and forth between thinking someone out there would love it or that no one would.

Job details:

3 hours per day, Mon-Fri, 9:30-12:30
£20 per hour (£1,200 per month)
4 weeks paid holiday per year but can take all of school holidays off unpaid if desired
Mostly admin but would need to pass background checks as would be handling sensitive info
Must be very good with both numbers and people (especially people!)
Potential to progress

I know it's a decent hourly rate but because it's only three hours a day it still only amounts to £1,200 per month, so I'm not sure if many people would want (or could afford) that. I need someone with qualifications too due to the nature of the business. Is it crazy to try to find someone for this? Or should I wait until I can take on a full time employee?

YABU: It's crap
YANBU: There's someone out there for you (maybe)

Jobs like that are gold dust, usually you're on minimum wage if you get hours like that.

skeggycaggy · 16/03/2021 19:12

Pick me!

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/03/2021 19:12

I think you’ll get an awful lot of interest and very probably a significant amount of it won’t be from people interested in the work per se, rather the hours. Which is fine, to a point, an employee can do a good job whilst not loving the actual substance of it, but as a small business you’ll want somebody who does care for it to some extent as you do.

notanothertakeaway · 16/03/2021 19:12

I think potential to progress coukd be v attractive to people with young children, who may wish to increase hours as children get older

I'm sure you would have plenty of applications

orangenasturtium · 16/03/2021 19:13

Absolutely. Where do I send my CV? Grin

Although you say that the person needs specific qualifications. I suppose it would depend on whether the hourly rate reflects the going rate for those qualifications.

Wrenna · 16/03/2021 19:16

I do four hours a day three days a week and I love it! I do M,T and Thurs.

BackforGood · 16/03/2021 19:16

As I'm sure you've realised by now, you'd have your hand bitten off for a job like that.

StarCat2020 · 16/03/2021 19:17

I think it sounds like a great job and I would apply straight away if it was local to me.

Only one thing is that legally employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (pro-rata)

sorryforswearing · 16/03/2021 19:17

I wouldn’t mind applying myself. Even more attractive if the hours could be done as two full days if preferred. Go for it. You’ll be inundated.

PervyMuskrat · 16/03/2021 19:18

You might want to think about the pay rate when looking to the future - it’s the equivalent of £39k for a 37.5 hour a week full time role. If get get more work in the future, can you afford to pay that for a full time person (plus employers nic and pension) - if you recruit someone on top, could you afford to pay that?

It’s a lovely idea but would you still be profitable?

nestlestealswater · 16/03/2021 19:20

That would be perfect for me, and I'm sure many other people. It's so hard to find a job that fits around school hours and holidays!

MiniTheMinx · 16/03/2021 19:20

Pick me....I've taught maths and work with kids in care with very challenging behaviour. Grin seriously you'll be swamped with applications. I think you've made a good decision to spread the hours over five days if you want someone who will be focused on this job. Too many part time roles justify poor pay on the back of a belief that it allows other part time work to compensate.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/03/2021 19:21

Oh my God are you having a laugh? There are at least a million people in this country who would like exactly this job.

Louisa111 · 16/03/2021 19:21

Great job.. if it was me I'd go for it ☺️

MeredithGreysScalpel · 16/03/2021 19:23

Oh come on, you can’t genuinely think no one would be interested in that.

MeanderingGently · 16/03/2021 19:25

I'd go for this, my kids are all adults now but as I'm older I want part-time work rather than long days. I'm well qualified though (degrees etc) and get a lot less per month for my current part-time role.....

JoJo10 · 16/03/2021 19:25

It’s my perfect job! Even better if I could do the hours over 3 or 4 days.

gracelessladyhottramp · 16/03/2021 19:25

Oh wow - if only this were the norm!! You sound like you'll be a fabulous employer op.

Ifyoudontlaughyouwillcry · 16/03/2021 19:26

I have a job like this - not paid as good. It’s great. All my mum friends are very jealous. You will be mobbed!

flowerycurtain · 16/03/2021 19:26

Like someone else said I'd check what you promise before increasing the wage in line with hours. That's a heck of a salary to pay someone unless your business is v v profitable and stable. Once you have someone in that role they aren't going to leave without a fight.

Check your sick pay.

Check you give enough holiday

As a mum I'd jump at the chance. As a fellow business owner I think you're being slightly naive.

MadeForThis · 16/03/2021 19:26

It maybe depends on what qualifications you need to take the job.

Rainbowx · 16/03/2021 19:27

Yes me I'm in essex! Worked with children before .

Everythingiswonderful · 16/03/2021 19:30

Pick me!

Standrewsschool · 16/03/2021 19:30

People would take that job at £10 an hour!

I do double the hours at half the rate, so earn a similar monthly total.

Jobs that are term-time and/or fit within school hours are rare, so you’ll have hundreds of people applying.

Can I apply?

Undies1990 · 16/03/2021 19:30

Me, me .... pick me!

How do I apply?!
