Very nervous for my vaccine on Thursday...

22 and have severe health anxiety alongside panic attacks, I'm so scared to have the vaccine and face potential side effects Sad

I have the flu jab yearly which worries me enough but there's been so much bad press about the vaccines lately- I wish they would let me know which one it is so I can research it.

I haven't had Covid (that I know of) and stuck to all the rules but had a very active and busy summer when we were allowed last year, theme parks, pubs, restaurants etc

AIBU?

So do I! No loo roll, pasta, bread, cooking oil, canned food... but shelves and shelves of Easter eggs.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 15/03/2021 11:20

I'm sorry you have such anxiety about your health.

I had the AZ jab 3 weeks ago today and it was fine! Sore arm for a couple of days after but nothing worse than the flu jab. You will be fine.

Covidatemyhomework · 15/03/2021 11:21

If you’re worried about the latest ‘news’ about the AZ vaccine, look at the stats. They’ve had 50 reported cases of serious blood clots - out of over 10 million doses administered. Such a tiny percentage that it very well may have no links at all. Having full blown covid is much much much more likely to cause serious issues. I wouldn’t hesistate to have the vaccine if offered it.

ToffeePennie · 15/03/2021 11:21

You will be ok.

  1. it doesn’t hurt. I didn’t even notice they’d done it
  2. you might get a bit sore/cold like symptoms or be tired for a day or two. That’s all perfectly normal.
  3. I had the AstraZeneca and they let me sit in my car, scroll Facebook and read Mumsnet. After a while a nurse came out and said “do you feel ok” “yep” “ok you can go home now” and that was it. Breathe, relax, you can do this
VeganVeal · 15/03/2021 11:51

Trouble is you dont know what you are getting. There is no way I'd have the Astrazeneca jab. Lots of countries have stopped using it, there must be good reason behind it

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2021 11:57

@VeganVeal. I know what I'm getting, I have been told. See @Covidatemyhomework's post.

It’s helpful to actually have an idea of the reasons before being swayed by them one way or another. There have been a similar number of clotting events after vaccination with both Pfizer and AZ (both numbers you would expect to see in the general population so not a problem) but there were some two incidents very close together which raised alarm. This is more to do with the manufacturing process rather than the vaccine itself so these specific batches were suspended and further vaccinations halted until investigations complete. The UK manufactures it’s own separate supply (this was what the argument centred on earlier in the year with EU Irish border restrictions) so isn’t an issue with the UK supply afaik.
pudcat · 15/03/2021 12:25

If it helps, you talk to quite a few people at the hub before you get the vaccination. there were 2 nurses in the final cubicle doing it. One was entering more details on computer and talking to me so I never saw the needle. The other then said I will do it now and before I could blink she said all done. Did not feel it and was so surprised. Felt fluish and tired next couple of days but was ok after that

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 15/03/2021 12:32

Sorry if I'm being ignorant but how are you getting the jab so soon? With you only being 22 I wouldn't have thought you'd be entitled to it yet?

However more to the point of your post you aren't being unreasonable to be nervous - it is understandable given that it is a newly developed vaccine. You'll be fine I'm sure Smile try not to worry.

Mrsorganmorgan · 15/03/2021 12:57

My husband has post stroke epilepsy, among other issues. He has had the Astra Zenica vaccine, and was fine. I am sure it is better than getting the illness!

minniemoocher · 15/03/2021 13:05

Had mine last Friday. I'll be honest, it was worse than my bout of covid last year, which a barely had symptoms for but I'm at work today with no symptoms so they dissipate quickly.

Have paracetamol at home and expect to feel rough the following day. I managed to get to the shops Saturday, wasn't that ill but curling up on the sofa is what I mostly did, by Sunday I was just a bit tired.

Health anxiety is pretty bad, my ex struggles with it, but try to remember that a bad bout of covid is far worse.

QueenPaw · 15/03/2021 13:33

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake probably under clinically vulnerable/carer. Loads of reasons

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/03/2021 13:36

My aunt has health anxiety and had a breakdown when she was admitted for covid. 8 months later she is only just recovering. So I’d say catching covid is a lot worse

Well you’ll HATE me then. I’m 32, I receive my SECOND dose in a week or so. There are LOTS of reasons someone would climb higher on the tree. Don’t assume
coffeeandbooks · 15/03/2021 17:28

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake as previously mentioned, I have epilepsy.

Sorry I missed you saying this! And I wasn't having a dig or anything. I didn't know if I'd missed an announcement or something on the news about us younger lot being able to get the jab now.

I hope you're feeling better about the whole thing - you'll be absolutely fine I'm sure Flowers

murbblurb · 15/03/2021 17:35

you have a choice, OP - and this is why I agree that everyone should have a choice. In the UK the choice is 'take it or leave it' due to managing the supply. You cannot choose which vaccine you have.

I chose to take the vaccine because it presents much lower risk than covid. And definitely much lower risk than the car journey to get vaccinated.

different countries make different decisions. I have had the Astra Zeneca and got home to find the blood clot thing on the news. Too late - but saw the actual numbers and am not worried.

It is the first vaccine I have ever had that I didn't feel. They've had a lot of practice by now. If you do get side effects, remember that they WILL pass and you are not infectious with them.

the best to you.

ChrissyHynde · 15/03/2021 17:39

I've been today , everyone is so kind and helpful, I'm sure you'll be fine . Tell them your feeling anxious , they can perhaps help ?

MasterBeth · 15/03/2021 17:41

@beguilingeyes

If it's the Astrazeneca you don't have to wait 15 minutes afterwards. I work in a huge Vaccination Centre in East London.

The nurses are all prepared for nervous/phobic patients . You'll be well taken care of. The jab itself is very like the flu jab...you may not even feel it. I had a sore arm the day after and felt a bit hot. A couple of paracetamols and I was fine.

I’ve just had the AstraZeneca this afternoon and had to wait 15 minutes as I was driving.
Decorhate · 15/03/2021 17:49

I had mine this morning (AZ). They said U could sit & wait for 10 minutes or so but it was not necessary. They did advise not to drive for 15 minutes (I had walked up).

I cannot tell now where the injection was. There is absolutely no sign of it.

Someone at work did advise me to take paracetamol for a couple of days, which I will do.

The people at the vaccine centre were all lovely & I am sure will be great with anyone who is nervous.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 15/03/2021 17:50

Yes I didn’t have to wait because I was walking. The big baby drove so had to wait 15 mins.

MyFavouritePlace · 15/03/2021 17:52

I had AZ on Saturday, not asked if I was driving and just told to wait a couple of minutes. No stickers offered!

Cold \ fluey symptoms came on Saturday night - all good by lunchtime today. Paracetamol helped me.

Good luck

Happierlife · 15/03/2021 18:07

I had the AZ yesterday and was driving but wasn't asked to wait at all. Had the vaccine, booked 2nd appointment and was on my way home. There were some people being asked to wait but not sure why.

Panicmode1 · 16/03/2021 06:33

I had AZ yesterday evening. Arm slightly sore this morning but feel fine. I was told that if i was driving, to sit in my car for 15 mins afterwards (not quite sure what would have happened if I'd had a severe reaction in my car 🙄) but all was well - and it was all so brilliantly organised.
