22 and have severe health anxiety alongside panic attacks, I'm so scared to have the vaccine and face potential side effects Sad

I have the flu jab yearly which worries me enough but there's been so much bad press about the vaccines lately- I wish they would let me know which one it is so I can research it.

I haven't had Covid (that I know of) and stuck to all the rules but had a very active and busy summer when we were allowed last year, theme parks, pubs, restaurants etc

AIBU?

Taking paracetamol prophylactically can sometimes cause a vaccine to be less effective. It can be used if you get symptoms but I wouldn't use it on a 'just in case' basis

Horsemad · 14/03/2021 20:54

@Sparklingbrook DH got a sticker. 🙂

I've had covid and was terribly Ill,it was indescribable and to see my husband of 36 years shaking with fever and in so much pain (he never complains) was frightening, plus to add to the fact, a close friend of ours has just come off a ventilator after 3 months, I say please don't worry, accept the vaccine with open arms, you will be fine, I had mine 3 weeks ago, I was so pleased to get it.

AgeLikeWine · 14/03/2021 20:57

DP had the AZ vaccine yesterday.

He’s fine, and so will you be, OP.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/03/2021 20:59

I've had covid

I've had the vaccine (Pfizer)

Get the vaccine - I am still struggling with long covid from Oct - and I had it mildly! I had a sore arm from the vaccine - nothing else

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/03/2021 20:59

I had my jab early this week - I’ve felt a bit tired for a few days (so tired - one day then ok the next) but not in any way sore (I even forgot which arm had been jabbed) or sickly. I had a DVT a few years back (nothing to predict this - was very skinny at the time) and I’m still here!

ghostyslovesheets · 14/03/2021 21:00

Oh yes and my ex had AZ yesterday - he's feeling a bit headachey today but he's fine

Horsemad · 14/03/2021 21:01

Grin All in good time, @Sparklingbrook!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 14/03/2021 21:02

I had mine today. All fine. Bit of achy arm but so minor.

Jillybons · 14/03/2021 21:02

@coffeeandbooks all the best for tomorrow. I’m extremely needle phobic and it honestly didn’t hurt at all. Also worst case you’ll get what feels like mild flu (a bit achey and very tired for a couple of days). Promise it’s not as bad as you’re thinking Flowers

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 21:02

If one isn't offered do I have to ask? Just texted my friend and one was not offered to her. Shock
TrickorTreacle · 14/03/2021 21:03

Everyone reading this - GET YOURSELVES VACCINATED!

I'm in an at-risk group and I have a fear of needles but I still had my flu and covid vacs done. It's honestly not too bad. The needle is in and out within 5 seconds. No pain at the needle site afterwards, except that I can tell that I've had it.

Blood tests and MRI scans (both involving needles) are far far FAR worse than flu/covid jabs!

phoenixrosehere · 14/03/2021 21:05

Had mine on Wednesday and the only side effect I had was a sore arm where it was put in. It was sore to the touch but not bothersome. The whole process was quick and efficient.

Carandi · 14/03/2021 21:11

I had the AZ vaccine last Wednesday. Didn't feel a thing and actually questioned if it had been done. No side effects whatsoever. None of my family had any side effects either. I know a couple of people who did but just mild flu symptoms for 24hrs which were relieved with paracetamol.

As to "it might not even work"...do you know why we don't have to have smallpox vaccines these days OP? Because they worked when given years ago and they eradicated the disease. Trust in our scientists because Covid won't go away by itself. They've been working on vaccines for corona type viruses for years and only had to identify the viral sequence of SARS-CoV-2 (which they did early last year) to enable them to develop the effective vaccine. Good luck tomorrow.

Chloemol · 14/03/2021 21:13

@beguilingeyes

I had AZ Saturday, all vaccination centres in our county and the next one from what I seen FB say you can go straight away if you are not driving

If you are driving you have to wait 15minutes

Lindy2 · 14/03/2021 21:15

I've had Covid and I've now also had the vaccine.

The actual illness is far, far worse and far more scary than the vaccine.

The virus took 5 weeks to infect everyone in my family one after the other. It was 4 weeks of pretty much constant fear and anxiety about how ill we would all get and whether we would all recover ok.

Have your vaccine and protect yourself and everyone around you from what my family and I had to go through.

If you have had the flu vaccine then you can do this. I’ve had both and they felt the same to me. Literally a scratch and then nothing, I only know the dr pulled the needle out cos I saw her sit down. It was easy. I get nervous too.
Horsemad · 14/03/2021 21:16

Refuse to leave until you receive one @Sparklingbrook Grin

DH didn't want a sticker but they slapped one on his chest & packed him off (after his 15 min wait as he was driving).

partyatthepalace · 14/03/2021 21:18

Use your CBT techniques to manage this.
You know it’s irrational, and any side effects from the vaccine will be much better than a bad dose of covid. You also know that it’s important for us all to have it, to protect the vulnerable and let society get back to normal.

Don’t research which one - you know that will just feed your anxiety. Focus on doing whatever will help manage it.

Anniegetyourgun · 14/03/2021 21:20

Had mine last month. Barely felt it at the time, then a slight bruise-y feeling in the arm for a few days (then I bumped my arm while doing some gardening and got a proper bruise and soreness, so I can't tell you when the vaccination feeling would have stopped!). A couple of colleagues (one about my age, i.e. old-ish, the other nearer your age) mentioned feeling shivery a few hours after it and then very tired/sleepy for about a day, then it just stopped and they were fine. No-one I know of has reported feeling sick.

I tell you what's nice: I work alongside a vaccination centre and see all the people queuing up there, nearly all of them excited, giving thumbs-up as they leave etc. It's like joining an exclusive club, except that hopefully it will be (totally) inclusive after a very few months more!

MintyCedric · 14/03/2021 21:20

I had the Pfizer a few weeks ago and was also anxious about side effects. I had a slightly sore arm for 24 hours and that was it.

The centre was really well organised.

More relevant perhaps...my friend (aged 32) had the Astra Zeneca jab a couple of weeks, also because he's epileptic. Sadly he had his first seizure in 5 years 10 days before the jab, but also had no side effects whatsoever.

I hope that's reassuring and that all goes well.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 14/03/2021 21:27
@Horsemad I get you, I think it's partly as it's all happened so quick and we still don't have a full 100% guarantee vaccine iyswim (and there are so many variants!)

I keep worrying and thinking what's the point if it might not even work Sad
This is the same for the flu vaccine @coffeeandbooks - the vaccine is based on the worst or most common variant that year, and also gives some protection against other variants in the group.

If it helps to hear experiences - I'm a healthcare worker in early 30s and have had AstraZeneca. Most of my colleagues had Pfizer (just because we got them done at different times). All totally fine, worst anyone got was a headache and sore arm

ApplesinmyPocket · 14/03/2021 21:28

Look, I genuinely mean this in the nicest possible way, but everyone I know who has had the vaccine (lots of people, for various reasons) just gets on and has it. Delighted with the opportunity to have it. It's only on MN I see all this angst about it!

We've had a mixture of Pfizer and AZ. Not one of us has had anything more than a slightly sore arm, other than one person who said she felt 'tired' the next day.

Go and have it, and feel glad.

I do honestly mean this as kindly - I've had health anxiety in my younger years and it was absolutely horrible. I hope yours fades away over time, as mine did.
