Very nervous for my vaccine on Thursday...

22 and have severe health anxiety alongside panic attacks, I'm so scared to have the vaccine and face potential side effects Sad

I have the flu jab yearly which worries me enough but there's been so much bad press about the vaccines lately- I wish they would let me know which one it is so I can research it.

I haven't had Covid (that I know of) and stuck to all the rules but had a very active and busy summer when we were allowed last year, theme parks, pubs, restaurants etc

AIBU?

Kind of know how you feel OP. I am pro vaxxing, my kids were vaxxed as babies & I had flu jab for first time this year as offered due to the Covid situation.
However, I am reticent about having the Covid jab. No idea why, think it's just been the hype/the build up etc. I WILL have it but haven't booked it yet, despite having had the letter for a week... Hmm

Tbf the side effects are just like having the flu for 24 hours. Take paracetamol day before jab and straight after jab to reduce side effects
Daisychainsandglitter · 14/03/2021 20:40

Reading with interest. My stepmum (in her 60s) last week had hers and felt awful for a few days afterwards.
My in laws had theirs last month and were absolutely fine which I'm sure you will be OP.
I had a letter and text over the weekend asking me to book my vaccine due to my underlying health condition. I'm not sure what my underlying health condition is tbh. I'm mid 30s so I'm very sorry to hear that you haven't been asked for yours yet @pinkstripeycat. I hope you get called for yours soon.

Horsemad · 14/03/2021 20:41

DH had his on Friday - was a bit lethargic yesterday but is fine today.

Significantown · 14/03/2021 20:42

I had the pfizer, with a fifteen minute wait after. There was a clock on the wall. One lady was clearly anxious, but she seemed fine afterwards.

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2021 20:42

Hi - I work at the vaccination centre as a volunteer- it's a very smooth slick process. You only have to wait 15 mins if you are driving. 5 mins for everyone else. I have seen hundreds of people vaccinated now and honest it's never a problem at all. Some people are nervous but they put you at ease and everyone leaves with a smile on their face

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2021 20:43

Most people have mild flu like side effects the next day and are recommended to take paracetamol as a precaution

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 20:43

Do you get a sticker or do you have to wait for the second one for that? ,

Panicmode1 · 14/03/2021 20:44

I'm having mine tomorrow. I'm anxious (because no-one likes needles!) but I keep thinking, this is one step closer to getting back to normality and being able to hug my parents.

@pinkstripeycat

I’m in my 50s and haven’t been offered the vaccine yet. I’m asthmatic and know what its like to struggle not breath. I worry if i caught COVID it would affect me badly. I haven’t galavanted all summer, stayed away from public places, restaurants and bars and had to cancel our holiday last summer. I haven’t been able to work for 7 months of the last year and haven’t had a penny of help from the Government. People like you OP piss me off with your winging. Have the jab or don’t but you youngsters are the main part of the problem with your “I can do what I like” attitude and then act all snowflake when faced with side effects of the vaccine

That's an appalling generalisation. You have no idea how the OP has behaved. If she has health anxiety I imagine that she's been following all the rules assiduously. And she's not being a snowflake. She has severe anxiety and had various treatments for it.

Jeeze, what a horrible post.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/03/2021 20:45

Had mine on Thursday 11th (42 but have a heart condition).

Was fine. I did feel a bit under the weather the next day, and have been a bit tired, with a sore arm. But really this is all nothing to having had COVID (I have had it but a year ago) so I’m immensely grateful to have had it.

I know this is prompted by your health anxiety, but it’s much better than not having it.

coffeeandbooks · 14/03/2021 20:45

@saraclara Thank you Thanks

I have been acting within the rules the entire period.

I'm young and had the Oxford Astra Zeneca no problem

Keep working on the anxiety there is no need to live Like this it's dominating your life

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/03/2021 20:46

@Sparklingbrook I got a sticker for my first jab!

SnackSizeRaisin · 14/03/2021 20:47

If you are that anxious over your health why were you out in pubs etc over the summer? The two don't really tally... surely the vaccine is less risky than the disease?
I think just put it out of your mind for now. It will be over in a few seconds and although some people get side effects they are not that bad

@Horsemad I get you, I think it's partly as it's all happened so quick and we still don't have a full 100% guarantee vaccine iyswim (and there are so many variants!)

I keep worrying and thinking what's the point if it might not even work Sad

dementedpixie · 14/03/2021 20:48

You should only take paracetamol if you get symptoms, not as a precaution

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 20:48

Brilliant Grin I saw one stuck to the floor in the supermarket which made me a bit sad-that poor person losing their sticker like that.

@SnackSizeRaisin The main thing for me is my emetophobia (vomit fear) and Covid wasn't really linked to vomiting (in adults anyway!) so I wasn't as worried but I've seen some comments recently about people vomiting or feeling nauseas after the vaccine and that's what's worried me most I believe.Sad

(Also I literally was housebound for the best part of 6 years so it was a huge step for me to still see my friends and go out last summer, I'd made so much progress the year previous that I couldn't let Covid take me back again).

Not what the chemist said to me when I had my vaccine, was told take day before, take straight after jab and take again if needed with side effects

Unnecessarily harsh. The Op has stated that she suffers with health anxiety and panic attacks yet you give her a hard time and start slagging off youngsters. It's not her fault you haven't had your vaccine yet. I'm in my 50s also and yet to have the vaccine, our turn will come soon enough.
Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 20:53

I am going back to work an hour after mine so I am thinking positive about side effects, but by chance I have Friday off so that's good.
