Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

@Hoppinggreen

Thank you DoverSoul. My DD was also there and told me I had used my “Mum voice” on him
He obviously needed it! the tit

sneery, sanctimonious playground-style ad hominem belittling

Funny you should say that, I know someone who claims to have been bullied by Nicky Campbell at school.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/03/2021 16:34

There is a you tube video of him talking to his youngest daughter about sex education. It is very funny and they both have the same very strong accent so I’m guessing it’s real!

Ah, that was probably Let's Talk About Sex - made a few years ago, but Channel 4 are in the middle of repeating the series now.

He still knew he was doing it for telly, though.... Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/03/2021 16:36

"But, Pater - why this ridiculous affected working-class Cockney accent? Whatever is the meaning of this?"

"Shut it, love, and just do it - it's my bread and butter, innit!!"

Anoisagusaris · 19/03/2021 16:44

@Coldilox is that an Irish MMA celeb? Sounds about right if it is.

ancientgran · 19/03/2021 16:45

@Iamthewombat

Maybe he remembered the poster from 30 years earlier...

Or said he did! It wouldn’t be a convincing evidence base in any event. If you can remember the face of your teacher from 30 years ago, for example, does that give you ‘the memory of an elephant’?

Bit different though, one meeting with someone 30 years ago. In classroom several times a week for at least a year 30 years ago. Not really comparable.
Anne1958 · 19/03/2021 16:47

Do people not realise that the RF and politicians have aides who provide additional background information to remind them about details and help them make conversation at public functions?

Oh I’m quite sure they do but this wasn’t the kind of scenario where the above would have applied. It was a random encounter.

Whenthesunshines · 19/03/2021 16:58

Wombat - ‘Or said he did! It wouldn’t be a convincing evidence base in any event. If you can remember the face of your teacher from 30 years ago, for example, does that give you ‘the memory of an elephant’

How is that the same thing?
I remember nearly every teacher that taught me 40 years ago. I sat and looked at their faces pretty much every school day over several years.
I don’t remember people I met only once around the same time.

Villains

Craig Charles - undue attention seeking in the public in the West End.

@PantherPantherus Why does that make him a villain? Confused

Blondiney · 19/03/2021 18:48

Craig Charles bit my then boyfriend on the arm. We were in a pub and he appeared to be under the influence of more than just booze. Either that or he was just a twat.

I think Craig Charles had a cocaine addiction at one point so that may have been the reason for that behaviour (sorry to your boyfriend though). I thought he came across well on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! but he wasn't on it for long as his brother died whilst he was in the jungle so I haven't seen much of him.
Laquila · 19/03/2021 19:02

I worked for a high-profile "media villain" for several years and never found them anything but completely normal, i.e. generally a perfectly nice person but occasionally irritated by people being twats. Having said that, I never had reason to be caught in this person's crossfire, but I did see it happen on more than one occasion.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 19/03/2021 21:11

My husband met Trump around 15 years ago, he was working as a waiter at the hotel Trump was staying at. He said he shook all the staff’s hands and was perfectly pleasant.

Trump is a well known germaphobe who was bathing in hand gel before we all started using it. I find it hard to believe he was shaking hands

Whenspringcomes · 19/03/2021 22:12

Another one for a morning tv presenter...fake smile plastered on but not what she seems, great acting

UseYourIllusion · 19/03/2021 22:23

John Torode and Lisa Faulkner ooze chemistry!. I always thought that. On the other hand I was amazed to learn those two who present that music quiz on BBC1 were married (Marvin someone?)Never seen two people look so awkward together.

In the spirit of the thread I've met Mr Charles several times at various comic cons. I've worked them so been there all day. He tends to arrive late and very grumpy and loosen up as the days wears on and the alcohol flows. I recall one con he'd agreed to appear at knowing he was DJing the night before. I can't remember whether he sacked off altogether or arrived an hour before the close, but either way he upset a fair few fans.

Whenthesunshines · 19/03/2021 22:27

@Iamthewombat

I am highly entertained by the number of posters who want to paint Prince Charles as superhuman. Intellect beyond your wildest dreams! Recall beyond measure! Wisdom! Not briefed by aides, ever! Able to recall trivial conversations with obscure lady mayoresses after ten years then pick up where he left off!

The royal family are truly the master race. Bow down, peasants.

I think your imagination has got the better of you! Nobody has said anything like this!
Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 19/03/2021 23:54

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll yes his accent was exactly the same. In fact he was tipsy and I thought it sounded even stronger.
He does have swagger, a strong accent etc but he really was just lovely.

I’m glad you’re happy.

buffyp · 20/03/2021 03:55

@Iamthewombat

Jesus, does it matter? It's a lovely memory she has of him, just let it go

She can have her ‘lovely memory’ of kissing the hem of Prince Charles’ robe, but I have little patience when people assure anyone who will listen that public figures are delightful, clever, un-snobby etc etc based on the briefest of encounters. How can she possibly know whether that is the case? Answer: she doesn’t.

The same with minor TV presenters from Granada Reports. Why was this bloke, whom I’ve never heard of despite living in the north west, required to be bubbly and smiley when buying batteries from a petrol station on Christmas Day? Does he owe it to strangers to be ‘on’ all the time, even when buying batteries for (presumably) kids’ toys? Of course not, and it would be unrealistic to judge him based on that one encounter.

I doubt very much the op gives a toss for your opinion of her. I know I certainly wouldn’t. Personally, I have very little patience for intolerant snobs of either way, who think they are morally superior in some way. Your opinion has been made clear, it’s quite frankly coming across as bullying now.
TheDreamingSpires · 20/03/2021 09:20

My Dad was on the British Rail (as it was then) Board of Directors and met Jimmy Saville a few times because he was involved in their 'Age of the Train' campaign in the late 70s/early 80s.

Dad was an excellent judge of character and he absolutely loathed him. He said he couldn't work out what it was but whenever he was around, he had a very bad, evil, oppressive feeling and he gave him the creeps.

Iamthewombat · 20/03/2021 09:20

That’s good, because the feeling is mutual.

I haven’t claimed to be morally superior, incidentally. I like to see the evidence for a claim. None has been provided. Call that bullying if you like. My view is that screaming ‘bully!’ when you lose an argument cheapens the experience of people actually being bullied. Don’t let that stop you though.

Whenthesunshines · 20/03/2021 09:28

Iamthewombat

You like to see the evidence for a claim? What evidence do you have that others are wrong? You have your opinion but that is all.

You’re starting to sound like Piers Morgan.

GoryGilmore · 20/03/2021 09:38

@Iamthewombat if you like to see evidence for a claim, this website (and any other anonymous forum on the internet) probably isn’t the place for you.

SimplyMarvellousDarrrrrrling · 20/03/2021 09:41

I agree with @buffyp and @whenthesunshines
@Iamthewombat you are coming across as such a silly Billy 😂 but it's amusing me, so you crack on lovey 😄😄👍
