Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

I ask a question about how a poster could possibly know that Prince Charles is bright with the memory of an elephant
Maybe he remembered the poster from 30 years earlier... Smile

Cowbells · 19/03/2021 09:46

@draughtycatflap

Why do people write they are ‘gutted’ about what some random has quite possibly made up or misinterpreted about their fave celebrity?

Weird.

Oh and Ann Widdecombe ate my paintbrush.

That doesn't surprise me. That woman is an absolute bitch when it comes to art supplies. She left my gouaches in tatters. Gutted.
Iamthewombat · 19/03/2021 10:05

Maybe he remembered the poster from 30 years earlier...

Or said he did! It wouldn’t be a convincing evidence base in any event. If you can remember the face of your teacher from 30 years ago, for example, does that give you ‘the memory of an elephant’?

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2021 10:24
**@Hoppinggreen He shouted at me

Why? Obviously because he is a shouty twat but what was his justified to him reason?
Not a very interesting story and the whole thing was a bit weird but here goes
We were at an event and he was doing a meet and greet thing. My friend wanted a photo with him so queued up to get one. I got ready to take the photo and checked behind me before I stepped back as I knew there were bags there. He said be careful or you will step on that ladies bag. I calmly replied that it was fine as I was aware of the bag and was being careful not to stand on it. He then shouted at me quite aggressively “I told you to watch what you are doing”
I again calmly replied that I was being careful, was aware of the bags, was nowhere near them and I didn’t appreciate being shouted at by him. There was a stunned silence from both him and the rest of his team. My friend then said that she had changed her mind about the photo and we left
It was really odd the way he just switched like that as soon as someone didn’t instantly say “yes Gregg, sorry Gregg”

Jesus, does it matter? It's a lovely memory she has of him, just let it go 🙄
ThatDamnKrampus · 19/03/2021 11:05

Paul Crone from ITV (a presenter) - years ago. I was working in a service station garage on christmas day and he came in for batteries.

On tv he was always bubbly (don't know if he still is bubbly and if he is even still on Granada Reports). But he was so abrupt and quite frankly a bit rude to be honest.

KarmaStar · 19/03/2021 11:27

My mum said she was sat in a pub she had never been in before and Peter Sutcliffe was stood at the bar and during the evening he turned and caught her eye.she didn't know who he was until she recognised him on the news after he had been arrested, she said his piercing icy stare made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up,describing his eyes as dark pits of hate.she got her partner and they left as she felt scared although he did not approach her or speak to her.she's never forgotten the look he gave her.

Mxflamingnoravera · 19/03/2021 11:55

I met Jimmy Boyle a notorious Glasgow gangster who was reformed and had married his psychiatrist. Was giving talks about penal reform last time I met him.

She can have her ‘lovely memory’ of kissing the hem of Prince Charles’ robe, but I have little patience when people assure anyone who will listen that public figures are delightful, clever, un-snobby etc etc based on the briefest of encounters. How can she possibly know whether that is the case? Answer: she doesn’t.

The same with minor TV presenters from Granada Reports. Why was this bloke, whom I’ve never heard of despite living in the north west, required to be bubbly and smiley when buying batteries from a petrol station on Christmas Day? Does he owe it to strangers to be ‘on’ all the time, even when buying batteries for (presumably) kids’ toys? Of course not, and it would be unrealistic to judge him based on that one encounter.

Mingalabar · 19/03/2021 12:26

Have met any number of truly horrible people when working in developing countries.

Either direct to Security forces where you know that their regiment and the people you were talking to had been directly involved in the slaughter of civilians (Myanmar against Rohingya but also against other ethnic groups, Karen, Chin, Shan) or in meeting with people that had "retired" from the security services in their country and taken a post in international companies.

The worst was a small, slight man with what I can only describe as the most awful 'wet fish' handshake working in west Africa as Head of Security. He'd apparently been responsible for the torture, execution and assassination of hundreds under the communist insurgency of the late 20th century, even to the point of dissidents in other countries. Made me shudder just to look at him.

^This with bells on.

@Iamthewombat , Christ , wind your neck in . They were there . You weren't . They can form whatever impression they want , as can you. There is no reason to spoil it for them

Angelbaby1985 · 19/03/2021 13:17

@Whenthesunshines

Met him a few years back in a pub in edinburgh after all that stuff was. Ment to have happened asked for his autograph and we ended up sitting at his table chatting with his bodyguards standing round bought us a few drinks seamed OK have a picture somewhere

Michael Barrymore has bodyguards?

Bodyguard maybe the wrong word he came in with minders or security that never left his side
Ovine · 19/03/2021 13:18

I agree with you, @Iamthewombat, but I think you're not allowing for the insane degree of class deference to those of 'higher birth' that seems to be a deeply-ingrained aspect of the psyche of many in the UK. Cf many current royal family threads, and the invariable description of the upper-classes as delightful, class-blind types rollicking around in battered old jalopies while dressed like slightly tweedy tramps.

I'm absolutely fascinated by what appears to be many people's sincere affection for the Queen, based entirely on her (1) never saying anything other than the same few platitudes in a couple of speeches a year, (2) never apparently changing and (3) giving the impression that she's primarily driven by duty and that none of it is much fun, despite her insane privilege.

DoverSoul · 19/03/2021 13:27

Hoppinggreen GW is obviously quite the prick but you and your friend are on my Christmas card list Grin

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2021 13:44

Thank you DoverSoul.
My DD was also there and told me I had used my “Mum voice” on him

I did a week's work experience as a runner on Watchdog when I was in my early 20s (16 years ago). Both Nicky Campbell and Julia Bradbury who presented it...awful. I accidentally dropped something while they were filming (it was pre-recorded) and they both shouted at me really aggressively. Really cold and rude to everyone though.
Funnily enough my husband also met Nicky Campbell on the set of Central Weekend (Midlands TV show that NC presented). He asked for NC's autograph at the end of filming and he said no really bluntly and walked off. So we figure he must be a genuine wanker, not someone just having a bad day!

That doesn't surprise me in the least about Nicky Campbell. If anybody has seen The Big Questions on Sunday mornings, he is so rude and sneering to people of faith with whom he disagrees - especially Christians. Doesn't just discuss or even challenge them further on their non-mainstream opinions but will shut them down and jeer in a way that he's trying to get the other people there to gang up on them with him as Chief Bully.

It's a Sunday debate show - obviously with people who have very differing viewpoints - and its clear brief is to strongly focus on religious and moral/ethical issues. He's perfectly entitled to his own opinions, but if he isn't capable of respectfully allowing the invited guests to express their own religious convictions in a religious-themed debate, he (and especially the programme makers) probably should realise that it's not the show for him.

I watch it every week (when it's on) and I've barely ever seen anybody else - even those from completely different ends of the belief/political spectrum - resort to such sneery, sanctimonious playground-style ad hominem belittling.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/03/2021 14:06

I'm not surprised MB needs bodyguards, if his treatment of young, healthy people is anything like he used to display on Strike It Lucky towards the elderly, often a bit doddery couples they had on most weeks.

It's all well and good humiliating and making sneery jokes at the expense of the old and vulnerable in a big, full TV studio; but if he ever dared to speak that way to the average younger bloke in the street/pub, he'd be needing those bodyguards pretty sharpish.

As simple, mindless, low-brow entertainment goes, the idea behind Strike It Lucky is quite engaging - if they'd had just about anybody else presenting it, I'd have happily watched it.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 19/03/2021 14:31

My sister has met MM through her work and said she is really quiet.

I've met Gordon Ramsey and he was so lovely. More shy than I thought he would be and way more attractive than I thought he would be.
I have met Danny Dyer too. He is lovely and a real gentleman.

GabsAlot · 19/03/2021 14:56

why do people think lisa faulkner won masterchef he fancied her-she couldnt cook an egg properly in one of the rounds

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 19/03/2021 15:05

Is his accent genuine? We have a theory that he only puts it on for the telly and that he actually sounds just like Brian Sewell in real life Grin

Mingalabar · 19/03/2021 15:25

Sorry... just to add to my previous post and chime with the theme of the thread, the last guy I mentioned was also a sports presenter on the prime time Saturday slot on his countries national TV channel.

Prince Charles certainly does have a good memory. Eight years after meeting my mum as our lady mayoress he walked over to her and picked up on their conversation from years earlier.

Do people not realise that the RF and politicians have aides who provide additional background information to remind them about details and help them make conversation at public functions?

There is a you tube video of him talking to his youngest daughter about sex education. It is very funny and they both have the same very strong accent so I’m guessing it’s real!
