School uniform yucky colours

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

@wasgoingmadinthecountry I recommend Aubergine or dark teal if you want a nice colour which stands out without being obnoxious.

What is most important to me as a parent, is the quality. My DD's school sweater & cardigan is such poor quality that the pilling begins after the first wear and after one wash they look a year old! It's so bad that we all now share tips to clean them without putting them in the wash!

A local secondary school has a black uniform with a red stripe to the right. They also have matching black sports leggings (presumably for PE) with the logo on also and a matching sports top. Looks really good

YouAreYourBestThing · 11/03/2021 21:34

My high school was brown and yellow...truly vile!!!

My friend sends her daughter to a primary school where they wear bright purple and orange uniforms...it is vivid! Gives me a migraine just thinking about it 😱

BearSoFair · 11/03/2021 21:34

When DS1 was at primary the jumpers were yellow...always looked grubby after a day! They've changed to blue now.

Not a fan of purple either but that's just because I hate the colour, no practical reason.

RedcurrantPuff · 11/03/2021 21:34

Purple and bright green sound horrible and I hate burgundy and brown as well.

When I was at school my primary had a green shirt and at secondary it was a peach shirt. Basically only one shop sold them. I’m all for easy to access colours in supermarket stocked items

jazzandh · 11/03/2021 21:37

Simple colours.

Grey trousers/skirt/ shorts. Pale blue polo shirt - no ties, and a V neck acrylic school jumper (they wash and dry quickly and don't fade).

Smart and practical.

MidSummersNightmare · 11/03/2021 21:38

I would suggest a choice of 2 colours for a t shirt or polo shirt with a logo badge which can be ironed on.
Same 2 colours for hoody or cardigan
Choose colours which are easily available.

Then for bottoms have blue denim jeans, shorts, or skirt or black joggers/ shorts for PE days.

Footwear black or white trainers.

This allows people to buy hard wearing clothes cheaply and gives options for different tastes.

Ours is grey and dark green which I don't really like - BUT my DS is autistic with sensory processing issues and I can see that dark green is a much calmer colour to have 30 kids bobbing around in in a small classroom if you have sensitivity to light or colour. Going to visit other schools with bright yellow, bright red etc I find a bit much now and think he'd really struggle. So I'll vote for muted colours as they're more inclusive.

RuthW · 11/03/2021 21:48

If I was choosing a uniform for a primary school I would have a pale blue polo and a navy sweatshirt with a grey or navy skirt or trousers

I hate purple and those bright green sweatshirts.

Wbeezer · 11/03/2021 21:51

My DSs high school has people blazers, not popular with the boys at all, especially mine who have red hair that clashes with the purple!

RestingPandaFace · 11/03/2021 21:53

Jumpers look so much so much smarter than sweatshirts. Sweatshirts always look faded after a few washes.

Wbeezer · 11/03/2021 22:02

@hailsie dark green would have looked lovely with my DSs' hair, jealous!

elfycat · 11/03/2021 22:02

DDs' Primary is dark brown cardigan/jumper with black skirt/trousers. A lot of people don't like brown, but it's a good colour for grubby children and I think it looks quite smart. Another local school had royal blue jumpers with grey trousers/skirts and for some reason I loathe it.

The white greyish with permanent pen marks polo shirts.

High school is black jumper, blazer, trousers, skirts with white shirts. Everything logo'd and costs a fortune

AnExcellentWalker · 11/03/2021 22:08

Previously had red, now in bottle green. Definitely prefer the green. It washes better with black / grey, doesn’t show the dirt as much. More likely to suit more children too. Bright red can be very harsh & in a household full of boys, if they don’t favour red, they may struggle to make a full wash load each week - we didn’t struggle as DD is pink mad...

Vinorosso74 · 11/03/2021 22:10

I'm not a fan of uniforms either. Colours I see and dislike are royal blue, bright green and yellow. Brown is also a no. The primary near us have navy polo shirts which seems more sensible than white or any other pale colours.

DaisyDaisyDay · 11/03/2021 22:11

I love navy with white shirts.. Strongly dislike bright red, it's an aggressive colour for a uniform. Not keen on green either.

Bluesername · 11/03/2021 22:16

Yellow and bright green are my least favourite.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2021 22:20

Yellow is bloody awful because it fades so much - I think it's the least fast clothing dye. I like yellow in clothing but anything I buy in yellow goes insipid very quickly.

I went to a secondary school with yellow blouses for girls and they just went see through!

Serin · 11/03/2021 22:23

Mine have variously worn burgundy, bottle green and a royal blue. All nice enough but the blue was best.

We have a local primary where the children can choose any colour sweatshirt, so long as it has the school logo on. They look very colourful, playing out. Like skittles sweets.

humanorwooman · 11/03/2021 22:24

Black is easy and cheap.

MiniGBypass · 11/03/2021 22:24

There are three primary schools in my town and they all have Royal blue sweatshirts and yellow polo's, always wonder why they didn't choose different colours to differentiate themselves!

BreatheAndFocus · 11/03/2021 22:24

I don’t like burgundy or purple. Not a fan of black either. For a primary school, I think black looks particularly horrible and harsh.

I like navy or grey and a turquoise blue. Trousers and skirts grey, then a colour for the jumpers/cardigans. Navy would probably be cheapest and easiest to get.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2021 22:25

Go to the supermarkets when they start to get their school summer dress stock in and see what colours are most easily available. Also check any time what polo shirt colours they have.

Although actually, I suppose they probably stock based on the local schools - so perhaps not helpful!

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 11/03/2021 22:25

Thanks so much everyone. It's all given me some really good info. Mainly yellow sucks (which is what I was really hoping people would say!) Will also take on board all the other comments about washing/sensory needs etc. Thanks Mumsnet!

Dark colours are far more practical and stay smarter for longer. Favourite would be dark green, least practical is yellow. Hate the really electric red and blue of some primary uniforms.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2021 22:27

You might also want to put out a survey among the parents of your actual school? :)

Also I think a uniform amnesty is really important, when you change it, so that the old uniform is allowed to be worn if it was handed down from a pupil who wore the old colour, but new uniform bought can only be in the new colour. It's a bit wasteful for the old second hand stuff to be banned after a couple of years.
