School uniform yucky colours

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

My school I went to (primary and secondary) was brown with yellow stripes, plus a bowler hat in winter and straw hat for summer. Other schools nicknamed us cowpats because of the uniform!

I quite like DDs primary uniform which is green.

DragonPoop · 11/03/2021 20:41

Local school where I used to live had ‘gold’ (aka a dark horrible yellow) polo shirts with navy sweatshirts- it’s hideous

FraterculaArctica · 11/03/2021 20:43

Preferably abolish. Hate school uniform, chose a primary for my kids that didn't have one. Sadly they adopted one after a year Hmm. But it's ok. It avoids my total hates of white shirt with grey or black skirts/trousers. So dull and colourless. Navy bottoms are better, with a colourful polo shirt and sweatshirt to go with it. (Red polo with red jumper, e.g.?) if you must.

tier4tears · 11/03/2021 20:45

Love that my kids wear light blue shirts and polo shirts that wash a lot better than white. Much more forgiving with the inevitable whiteboard pen/paint/lunch stains.

Wish they’d ditch the shirt and tie (compulsory from October half term until Easter) and let them wear polos all year round, much more practical for them all. Mine wear short sleeve shirts all year round to save having to faff with cuffs as oldest is dyspraxic. I also move the top button and stitch Velcro on the shirts as he can’t do the top button but is too big for any of the blue Velcro closing shirts I’ve found. Also avoids the grubby cuffs look too. Hate that the polos have to embroidered with school logo so are ridiculously expensive compared to supermarket brand.

They have grey trousers, fine easy to get from any supermarket.

Grey cotton knit jumpers are embroidered with logo, cost a small fortune, lose the colour quickly so there is every shade of grey and the cuffs fray after about a term. Awful! Sweatshirt material would be much cheaper, wash better and look smarter for longer.

Crazycakelady17 · 11/03/2021 20:48

My DD is royal blue logo cardigan/sweater white polo grey/black pinafore/skirt/trousers.
We were a forces family for 17 years so my boys went to a number of primaries and the best combination we loved was a navy blue tracksuit plain white T-shirt and white/black trainers no need for extra pe kit it was brilliant and they said it was so much more comfy!

BettyBeStillNow · 11/03/2021 20:51

No white PE shorts, I mean seriously. Black or navy please.

No yellow, or brown, or red which difficult to wash with lighter clothes like grey trousers.

No white polo shirts or buttoned shirts. Just no white.

Navy blue hides a multitude of sins. All the children who use whiteboards just use their sleeve to wipe it. It does come out in the wash but looks awful until washed.

I vote blue polo shirt and navy sweatshirt with grey trousers/skirt/pinafore.

MrsKoala · 11/03/2021 20:51

I dislike uniforms in general, especially for primary age. But what I really dislike about my kids school is it’s a proper white button up shirt and tie with a v neck wool jumper. Every other primary I know has them in polos and sweatshirts. So much more practical for small children. PE is a nightmare for the teachers. All the children I have spoken to in my sons classes hate PE because of the getting undressed and dressed part of it. Which seems really counterproductive.

Brunt0n · 11/03/2021 20:52

I don't like yellow or red.
The school my daughter will hopefully be going to has a nice teal greeny blue colour uniform (jumpers / cardigans / ties) and I LOVE it

novaparty12 · 11/03/2021 20:53

When I was little there was one school in the same town as me that wore red and white summer dresses and a red jumper I wore grey jumper and blue/white summer dresses. So boring. i pleaded with my mum to send me to the red school but obviously no problems with my school so it didnt happen. I remember thinking when I was about 10 that my kids would go to a red school. They didn't - their uniform was bottle green, much nicer than boring grey. I work in a red school now and love it and think it looks lovely. Polos can fade a bit but the sweatshirts are navy and I think this is a great combination.

RedBlackCandle · 11/03/2021 20:54

All the schools here are blue apart from the catholic school which is maroon so something that makes you look different to other local schools would be good.

Our school changed from green to blue and I have no idea why, it was before DD started so I haven't been able to ask. I actually find the blue polo shirts horrible to wash, I'd prefer white I think,

Her Nursery school had an optional uniform of bright red polo and bright red jumper which was adorable so I'd love that too.

Peckhampalace · 11/03/2021 20:58

My upper school had a sensible uniform (I think), black trousers/skirt cardigan/ jumper/blazer and any plain coloured shirt (too long ago for polo shirts).
Middle school was mauve shirts, purple jumpers/ grey skirts/trousers and I loved it.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 11/03/2021 21:01

There is a school nearby that has purple. It seems to suit everyone!

Nacreous · 11/03/2021 21:03

Yellow and brown are the worst. One of my friends had a school uniform with yellow shirts, brown skirts, brown opaque tights, and a yellow, brown and purple striped blazer. It was vile.

I don't mind white because you can bleach it.

My preference is something like navy or the anything in school colours option (red, navy/blue and white would give good choice?).

AfternoonToffee · 11/03/2021 21:09

Blue because everyone has blue and that makes you just boring.

My smallest is now at a purple school (big two did blue primary and she did nursery and first three years) It is a pain to get hold of, but it isn't blue.

Ilovemaisie · 11/03/2021 21:09

OP if your school does decide on a uniform (personally I say be brave and don't have one) please communicate with all local uniform selling shops including the supermarkets well in advance as to what colours/styles you are going with.
School uniforms are just about the only clothes a retailer sells that will be store specific. They will only stock what is relevant for local schools. But they need to know what to order. Sometimes a year in advance so the company can make sure they have sourced enough.
As a former employee in this field there is nothing more annoying than being asked for yellow polo shirts in August and then being yelled at by the customer because the store doesn't stock them as no school in the town has ever worn yellow in the history of the town - but because one school has decide to change their uniform they are now needed.
Oh and do it properly. Direct meeting with the store manager - not a quick word with the sales assistant who happens to be filling up the socks.

Didiplanthis · 11/03/2021 21:13

@Dressinggownchic

DD’s school is a lovely shade of purple with green braiding on the blazer. She wears purple knee high socks, black or grey skirt, white blouse, purple cardigan, purple tie and blazer. Gingham dress, white cardigan in the summer. Any colour of winter coat allowed.
WHITE cardigan ???? Really ???? On a child ?? At school ??? Although the purple socks are quite curious ! But more practical than white ones..
SquirtleSquad · 11/03/2021 21:14

Brown and yellow are awful.
I like Grey with burgundy the best.
Navy and dark green are fine.
Agree purple screams of trying to look private.

kowari · 11/03/2021 21:22

Yellow would be the worst for me, from personal experience, my child had five years of yellow. I like colour for primary though, so not grey. Navy can look washed out quickly, I don't think it is great for polos. Any of the others I would be happy with. We've had bottle green and royal blue (with a navy jumper) that have looked great.

ikeepseeingit · 11/03/2021 21:23

Yellow can look odd
Blue is the least offensive to everyone
Red is hard to wash but looks nice
Dark green I really like
Bright green is a bit garish but not as bad as yellow!
Brown is always a solid no, it's like grey, but old-fashioned.
Purple is divided I think- as long as it's not too bright?
Grey can look very dull and prison-like
Polo shirts are easier for everyone, what's the point in ties for kids anyway?

kowari · 11/03/2021 21:23

Just to clarify, bottle green and royal blue were at separate schools, not together!

MNWorldisCrazy · 11/03/2021 21:25

@ViciousJackdaw

I don't mind. Primark Uggs go with everything.
Excuse you? Is that supposed to be a passive aggressive 'dig' at parents of children at state schools? You insufferable snob

Plenty of wealthy parents CHOOSE to send their children to proper schools, rather than ones who's senior staff's only interest is cash! Hmm

Baublebox · 11/03/2021 21:28

One school that I worked in, many years ago, the children could wear any of royal blue, red or green jumpers with either white, pale blue or yellow polo shirts and grey skirts/trousers. Socks and tights could be the same as the jumpers.
I loved standing at the front of assembly. It looked so sunny and cheerful.

daisypond · 11/03/2021 21:28

I think all school uniforms should be purchasable from supermarkets, so plain jumpers etc all in basic colours, like navy or grey or red or green. It has to be cost effective, so that would rule out purple etc

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/03/2021 21:29

Least favourite - brown. Followed like yellow, purple and bright green. 2 local primaries to me have a yellow shirt/purple jumper and a yellow shirt/emerald green jumper colourway and they are nasty.

Mind you, I was once advised on teaching practise that one should never wear red as it 'excites the children'. I got a job following that at a school with a red uniform and it made me smile.

I like red and navy for uniform colours. DD's high school is burgundy and that doesn't look great after it's much-washed.

Sue81 · 11/03/2021 21:31

My daughters is navy skirt/trousers with sky blue shirts which looks smart I think. Brown or all grey would be the worst for young kids I think, so dull and drab.
