School uniform yucky colours

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

Another local school has jade/navy but kids can choose which combo of colours they wear for polo shirt or sweatshirt - both the same or a mix of each. I always think that gives a nice cohesive look without being clones.

Joggers are more practical for eyfs, I have strong feelings about restrictive clothing on this age group. Freedom to learn and explore should be more important than anything at this age.

I don't understand why people say that. My kids have never worn joggers until they had PE, wear uniforms or normal clothes at home and have never felt restricted?

What's that new fashion of sticking everybody in joggers now? Joggers or leggings?

cliftonbear · 12/03/2021 00:27

my primary uniform was navy and yellow which as a colour combination isnt the worst but i remember me and my friends would routinely give eachother ‘gnat checks’ in the summer because the bugs were so attracted to the bright yellow ://

As an ex-eyfs teacher joggers/leggings provide much more allowance for full rotation in the hips for children learning to sit crossed legged for the first time, they don’t get caught over knees like dresses or skirts when children are climbing, they are easier for independent toileting (if I had a pound for every little pair of trousers I needed to undo/fasten or skirt I needed to untuck). Not all children struggle with or are restricted by clothing, but enough are.

Primary - red (dark or bright), royal blue or purple are best, IMO.

Senior - navy or grey.

Make it easy to buy in the supermarket!

selectabo · 12/03/2021 03:16

@Poundaminute

The worst I have seen was a catholic primary school with brown trousers / skirts and yellow tops with brown jumpers 😬 Ks2 wear white shirts with brown and yellow ties.
That sounds so depressing
MotorwayDiva · 12/03/2021 03:33

My DD wanted to go to a school which had a rainbow uniform (couldn't find one) but goes to show kids like bright colours.

I think they should just allow either joggers, trousers or shorts in the specified colour. Joggers aren't always good for slim children as they have fixed elastic. If you get the right length they can be too big on the waist and young children can't tie and untie an internal drawstring. Then it's annoying that the supermarket ones tend to be the widest so you have to pay more.

I like red I find it really cheerful.

Saying that I also like the school that’s bright blue near me. The boys wear round neck jumpers with their polos and I find it really smart.

The local private school wears an awful pale grey and it looks really cheap.

stuckinarutatwork · 12/03/2021 06:30

Someone on here posted a few years ago about their child's reception class uniform policy which had them wearing a different colour polo shirt for each day of the week. Mental Confused

Lulu1919 · 12/03/2021 06:44

Yellow sweatshirt mine had for First School
After a W washes they went a dirty yellow colours and really made my pale blond child look sick !!! Ha ha

Lulu1919 · 12/03/2021 06:46

Navy is smart I always think
With red accents ...tie etc
Grey is easy

DDiva · 12/03/2021 06:53

My daughters is a bright turquoise green, looks lovely. Its impossible to.buy from the supermarket tho so have to.buy expensive school jumpers and cardigans which isnt great for low income families.

Hyacinth88 · 12/03/2021 06:56

There's a school here with a brown and yellow combination. Horrible

Confrontayshunme · 12/03/2021 07:01

A secondary near us had brown blazer and. Trousers with yellow shirts. It was AWFUL. They have changed it recently after 30 years of complaints.

NotOnMute · 12/03/2021 07:03

Just wanted to add, our school has cardigans from Stitch Design. They go on forever. I’ve always bought secondhand and had both kids use them, then back to the secondhand shop. Once had to sew a button on (there was a spare sewn into the care label). They fade and bobble a bit eventually, but don’t fray or test or wear through. Such good value!

A school near me wears this grey & yellow dress. To add insult to injury it's made of thick polyester and the weather here is over 30 degrees and humid most of the year. My DC refuse to consider the school because of the dress, although it's actually considered a top school. They've had the same uniform for 30+ years. Don't choose something like this. Just don't.

rc22 · 12/03/2021 07:08

My secondary school uniform was brown. Thankfully when I was in year 9 they changed it to black. I spent some years as a primary supply teacher so experienced a range of primary sweatshirt colours!! The brighter colours like red did make schools feel a bit more cheerful!!

midnightstar66 · 12/03/2021 07:15

Our uniforms are yellow and black which look fantastic together. So either a combo of white polo with yellow jumper (not too practical mess wise) or yellow polo with black jumper/cardi. I avoid washed out colours by doing a separate yellow wash. Other colours I like are royal blue or red. Bright and vibrant but not too light, and easy to source. I'd assume a bottle green to be a catholic school (maybe because it's the case locally, might not be a thing elsewhere) I'm not a fan of purple.

PaperMonster · 12/03/2021 07:22

I like navy or red. I also like plain white polo shirts - much easier for washing and stain removal.

00100001 · 12/03/2021 07:24

Why bit just poll your parents?

Easy enough to set up an online vote....

changingnames786 · 12/03/2021 07:24

I hate these modern academy colours we are seeing, yellow, purple, pink. I just like traditional red, green etc for primary and dark eg navy for secondary.

Riddo · 12/03/2021 07:25

Yellow is definitely the worst, it looks terrible after a few washes and shows every stain. It also makes anyone like me and my children (very pale and freckled) look really unwell 😂. Although as I hated school a yellow uniform might have done me a favour!

Blue is practical and imo suits everyone.

LilacsFreesias · 12/03/2021 07:30

I don't think purple and pink are specific to academies. There's a prep school not far from me with a pink blazer and Putney Girls has purple. And St Michael's catholic grammar.

rhombuspocahontas · 12/03/2021 07:32

Dislike yellow.

Like navy with red polos.

Our schools has navy cardigans/jumpers, white or blue tops and navy or grey bottoms. Looks smart and good to have the blue choice alongside the white.
