School uniform yucky colours

Please can I ask for your views? At a regular state primary school what are the most horrid colours for school sweatshirts? What are the best? What do you/your children like?

From the normal range of primary school colours - blue, red, navy, yellow, dark green, bright green, purple, light grey.

Thanks - most interested in your LEAST favourite.

I like red. My DCs uniform is royal blue and grey which is fine. I hate yellow as it really isn't everyone's colour and certain hair colours and complexions just don't go!

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2021 07:33

I think whacky colours have been around for a while!! I went to school in South Kensington (no uniform), schools nearby had rust/mustard; royal blue/kilts; royal purple; royal blue/yellow - mix of state and private there.

My colleague has children at a primary school in N Leeds who wear navy/red - they look like tiny cabin crew!

LilacsFreesias · 12/03/2021 07:33

My dc had grey at primary and navy at secondary. My favourite would probably be burgundy. Least favourite is that bright royal blue some schools have.

CreamRose · 12/03/2021 07:34

I think that’s why academies favour them Lilac - it’s an attempt to emulate independent schools.

Purple uniforms are almost always an attempt to say ‘aren’t we special.’ It irritates me as it’s almost always in areas that aren’t particularly salubrious.

I hate uniforms, DD has been to quite a few schools and non uniform was easiest. But if you must ...Red sweatshirts/cardigans and polos look nice, dark grey or black skirts/trousers, black trainers. A primary school here has an all black uniform, it looks awful on little ones.
And like most of this thread I hate yellow polos, DD has them for PE, they don't wash with any other colour and end up looking dingy. White's not great for any age of school child. I frequently throw DDs secondary school shirts away, when they still fit, because they have got stained and grubby looking. It's so wasteful and bad for the environment.
Another of the primary schools here has polyester sports shirts instead of poloshirts, they are really expensive and pull easily. No idea who thought up that idea.

carolinesbaby · 12/03/2021 07:45

Personally I don't like the idea of joggers and plain hoodies for school. They just look scruffy.
I think uniforms are necessary. When I was a child we didn't have uniforms and it made the differences between those whose parents shopped at John Lewis and those whose parents relied on hand me downs really really obvious.

I like a bright sweatshirt or cardigan with a school logo, in red, blue, green, purple, with a polo shirt (no logo) in white, blue, whatever the local Asda or Tesco sells, with everyone in the same colours, with standard grey skirts or trousers and black school shoes.

SusannaMorvern · 12/03/2021 07:46

Our blazer was made from WOOL shock

Ours too, my Mum struggled to afford it and it never got cleaned as we couldn't afford the dry cleaning. When it rained we all smelt like wet dogs!

Woodlandbelle · 12/03/2021 07:49

I would least like Grey.
I would prefer navy as its smart and easy to find in supermarkets (don't agree with crests) and easy to keep in terms of stains etc. Cheaper too than fancy creaster jumpers.

changingnames786 · 12/03/2021 07:50

@LilacsFreesias I'm talking about state schools

Procrastination4 · 12/03/2021 07:51

Any shade of green or yellow. (And, while you haven’t listed it as a colour, I absolutely hate brown uniforms.)

yearinyearout · 12/03/2021 07:53

One of our local schools is brown and yellow, it's grim. Not even a dark brown, it's like milk chocolate colour. Much prefer the traditional navy/grey or dark green.

Procrastination4 · 12/03/2021 07:55

I meant that I hate any shade of green or yellow and detest brown. Best colour navy, royal blue or red.

AxCap · 12/03/2021 07:55

DC school recently had a vote for shirt/polo shirt colour as they had been wearing a mixture of white or blue. Decided one option would be best and blue won (pupils, parents and teachers all voted) if that gives an insight into parents preferences.

In our area the catholic schools all have brown trousers and jumpers and then either blue, white or yellow shirts/polos. Not a good combination but it's been that way since DH and I were at school. The yellow is particularly awful with the brown though.

CorianderBee · 12/03/2021 07:57

I always liked red or blue

CatMuffin · 12/03/2021 07:57

I'm not convinced by the argument that it's ok for private schools to wear whacky colours but academies in deprived areas who do the same should know their place and not get ideas above their station.

daisypond · 12/03/2021 07:58

My DC primary was navy jumper and white or navy polo - buy from any supermarket. You could buy a logo one from the school but it wasn’t compulsory.

Secondary was grey jumper, black or grey trousers or skirt - buy from any supermarket. Plus school tie. Accessible to all.

EggysMom · 12/03/2021 08:03

Least liked - anything that is not a standard colour in the supermarket clothing "school uniform" section. So not purple, yellow or teal as they are not standard colours.

lollipoprainbow · 12/03/2021 08:03

My daughter has purple I love it !

That’s not my argument, at all. It’s to do with costs. You can pick up a plain grey school skirt cheaply and easily enough, but not a purple one (especially those kilt style ones.)

Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with attending a normal state school in a normal area. I don’t like the attempts to emulate private schools if I’m honest. It isn’t about having ideas above your station, it’s about them not really being any better or worse than the state option.

womaninatightspot · 12/03/2021 08:04

The white polo shirts at our school are at nightmare. Yes they look lovely first day of term but they get stained so easily. Lots of parents buy new cheap ones at the supermarket every few weeks so the environmental cost is high.

The sweater/ fleece is royal blue and I'd like a polo shirt option in the same colour. I like the colour of the fleece and it holds up to washing really well. A couple of ours were bought for my eldest and are the same colour on the youngest 6 years later!

Nith · 12/03/2021 08:04

Either have no uniform at all or whatever the local supermarkets stock most cheaply.

GintyMcGinty · 12/03/2021 08:06

My kids primary is gold and blue which is nice.

But the school next door is red and I prefer it.

LAgeDeRaisin · 12/03/2021 08:08

My primary uniform was MAROON. Envy

It's the cost of the wackyness that is the problem. DD was going to go to a state academy that had kilts. £35 pounds for one kilt, the same for a jumper, tbh it looked lovely, but who can afford that. Fortunately we moved. If you can afford the fees for private school, then it's fair enough to think you can afford a daft uniform. Plus people can pick and choose a private school, often there is no choice of state school.

TheRaccoon · 12/03/2021 08:08

My uniform was hideous. Navy kilt, light blue shirt, blue and yellow tie and a blue blazer with yellow piping.
