To think that violence against women is a hate crime?

AIBU - it’s not a hate crime
YAIBU - it is a hate crime

I think so many of us are upset by the constant news of women being assaulted, raped and murdered - and the horrific statistics about the majority of young women in the UK having been sexually harassed. (Guardian link below)

I am a BAME woman and I experience misogyny in the same way that I experience racism, if anything the misogyny is worse. I do not feel safe walking home late, I have had multiple attacks on my physical body by men because of my sex and multiple attacks of my body because I am brown.
It is no different except with being a diminutive female - I have been more easily overpowered and the sexual assaults have been much much worse. So how is this not a hate crime?

I was pulled into a strangers car on the way to school once and assaulted because of my female body. Can you imagine how I feel about my daughter walking to school? I do not understand how any person can not see this as hate towards women. It is certainly not love.

@daretodenim

I totally agree that it's a hate crime. Or should be.

It's also not a coincidence that it isn't listed as one.

If so then violence against men, yes it does happen and more frequently than we hear, should also be a hate crime but I doubt that fits the agenda here.
GreenlandTheMovie · 11/03/2021 22:37

Violence and other crimes against women due to their sex really is long overdue needing to be treated as a hate crime and an aggravated offence, along with the other main protected categories.

GreenlandTheMovie · 11/03/2021 22:39

@anamazingfind

But how do you prove hate was a motivating factor?

Basically you can't. So a pointless law that will tie up the legal profession for days trying to argue the point. What rapist is going to say I raped her because I hate women? Its ridiculous.

Just because you try to put a label on a criminal it doesn''t mean its proveable in law.

The majority here are putting forward perfectly reasonable feelings about crimes against women, but LEGALLY what is going to be proveable beyond reasonable doubt?

Much more sensible would be to campaign for longer sentences for violence against women, not the pitiful ones currently in place.

I disagree; if we treated it as a hate crime and aggravated offence, like the other protected categories such as racially aggravated offences, then it would enable the smaller transgressions (eg verbal abuse, minor assaults) that currently go unreported or are not dealt with to be rooted out. This would lead to a sea change in society towards the way women are treated.

t. What rapist is going to say I raped her because I hate women? Its ridiculous.

What mugger is going to say I stabbed/ punched / killed him because he's black/ Muslim/ Pakistani
The argument works in all cases

Yawn.

If the violence can be proved to have been motivated by the hatred of men, then, I guess, you can have your hate crime too.

anamazingfind · 12/03/2021 08:38

And how do you prove it? It's impossible.

When a hate crime is committed against a gay person or person of colour they look at the motivation...... Drug deal gone wrong. Not a hate crime. Knifing a gay guy and shouting abuse all the while is clearly a hate crime.

Rape is a sexually motivated crime. It's not motivated by hate. Many rapists and even serial killers are in apparently 'normal' relationships. Watching violent porn videos as evidence of hate is laughable. We'd be locking up millions of men especially as there are plenty of films featuring violence against women

Murder of an abused partner is motivated by jealousy and violence and entitlement and disbelief that the person is leaving them. Hatred of them at that point is also an issue, but it's also an issue when an abused woman finally snaps and kills the man who abused her. It's not self defence it's hatred for all the years of abuse and a disturbed mental reality.

The gang of youths who marauded around London and knifed and killed several people including a gay man and a homeless man weren't charged with hate crime because they didn't know the man was gay, they just wanted to kill. They hated everybody.

People here clearly have no concept of the legal process and how the burden of proof would make policing impossible and overburden the legal system which is already struggling with women unable to get justice for tangible crimes.

The sentiment i am entirely in agreement with but the energy should be directed at getting more rapists convicted.

No it doesn't. It's about motivation. If the perpetrator stabs a BAME for no reason other than the colour of his skin, then it's a racially motivated hate crime. If he robs him or her for their phone, it not hate related.

If a man rapes a woman it's sexually motivated. Untangling the thought processes behind the act, entitlement, hate, inferiority complex, poor childhood experiences etc etc. is a waste of time. Increase sentences for rape.

Hailtomyteeth · 12/03/2021 18:27

Rape isn't about sex. It's motivated by hate. The men who rape old women don't do it from lust, they do it because they hated the power their mother/grandma/teacher had over them and want revenge. Raping attractive young women is about power over them, and revenge and hatred for their, or other women's attractiveness. The rape of children is also about power. Don't think rape is about lust.

Men hate women. We bleed and don't die. No matter what you do in life, your mother pushed you out of her fanny. You can't be a father without us (yet). You can pretend to be us all you like but you aren't us no matter what you do, even if that hurts. Germaine Greer was right on this, at least. Women have no idea how much men hate them.

Violence against men isn't comparable, so for now, stop talking about it. You're muddying the waters, making it impossible for women to demonstrate clearly how we are treated, that we know it's wrong and that men have to stop doing it.

Porcupineintherough · 12/03/2021 18:32

Rape isnt about sex. Its motivated by hate

I dont know why people keep serving up this tired old tripe. A lot of rape is absolutely about sex. And can be motivated by sexual urges and indifference to the victim just as easily as hate.

anamazingfind · 12/03/2021 18:51

@Hailtomyteeth I agree with Porcupine, it is tired old tripe. Rape is a sexually motivated crime. The mindset is one of utter contempt for women and a desire to take what they want to someone who has denied it to them, or in revenge against another woman. As you say it is mostly about power, but sexual power is not necessarily the same as a hate crime. It is you and others here who are muddying the waters by trying to shoehorn a completely unproveable element into a criminal offence. Does a man who rapes a child do it from hate? Or perversion? Denying there is a sexual element is nonsensical. If you hate women, like Peter Sutcliffe did, you would just hit them over the head with a hammer. What would be the point in charging the likes of him with a hate crime? You can't get more serious than murder?

I keep making the point that in law it would be almost impossible to prove hate had anything to do with serious assaults on women.

Don't waste energy on something needless and unworkable. Campaign for better rape laws, longer sentences, and generally tighten all laws up that permit men to harrass and threaten women because they feel entitled to.

toolatetofixate · 12/03/2021 19:22

What the fuck are you talking about?
