Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

Haven't read the whole thread, but those huge white plastic loo roll covers you get in public toilets- the ones that only allow you to pull out one tiny square of paper at a time and only work if you do that at a snail's pace with extreme care. I never understood how they got past the initial sales demonstration to be purchased by anyone.

Oh yes! Those are so annoying!
CrayonInThreeBits · 15/03/2021 15:29

It's deliberate, to try to prevent waste of paper and clogging of toilets.

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/03/2021 16:24

I'm still not really ready to talk about this but here goes. I had the exact same spice issue. Bought a space rack. Unboxed it, put labels on & decanted the spice. Next time I went to grab one.... the teaspoon still didn't fit Hmm

@Buggersticks

The cutting edge on my greaseproof paper box. For a start it's on the upper lid and the best way to tear off is downwards, so I end up with a very messy raggy edge that looks like it's been cut with a spoon. Gets right on my tit ends that I always have to use the damn scissors. What's the point?
Turn the box upside down ?

Silicone cup cake moulds. Impossible to wash. - eh? Why? I have silicon cake moulds and silicon muffin moulds - they wash just fine!

Re the cream pot lack-of lids - i keep the plastic lids from the Azera coffee tins; they are just the right size for covering an open tin of beans/tomatoes etc (Yes I know we are not supposed to put a tin in the fridge but I do...) I wonder if they would also fit a small cream pot? I haven't bought cream since christmas so can't check.

L'oreal lipstick containers. Unlike most lipsticks the two ends don't just click together. You have to slot one side into the other like a jigsaw puzzle. It adds nothing to the case but adds annoyance to the user.

Food packaging that has the instructions on the inside
Or box of chocolates that has the mention on the bottom so you have to awkwardly lift the chocolates above your head balancing them precariously

LadyEloise that reminds me, my NYX eyebrow pencil. Has a brush one end and the pencil the other. The brush end cap is slightly shorter than the pencil end cap, so if you put them on the wrong way round (the caps are otherwise identical), you squish the delicate pencil into oblivion. There is no reason the two caps couldn’t have been the same size. Aaaaaargh.

Highchairs and Car Seats bloody nightmare to clean and take apart!
The IKEA highchair used to be hosed down here or chucked under the shower!

Any china cookware that has the recipe on the inside of the base. You have to copy it before you start cooking.

DuesToTheDirt · 16/03/2021 14:37

Someone upthread mentioned the sizing of cake tins, and how they have to get a ruler out to measure them for recipes. I just bought some small ones from Lakeland and they have the size stamped on the base, yay!

ultragroupie · 16/03/2021 15:11

@Whatisthisfuckery

I have a slow cooker with a pot you can use on the hob for browning meat, sadly it has no handles, and because it’s so light it moves around if you so much as bring a wooden spoon within a foot of it. I have to hold the pot still by the edge using oven gloves, which on a gas hob is somewhat dicey.
I think I have this one too, with the added bonus that the lid does not fit on tightly so the liquid evaporates when it's on slow cooker duty Angry

On my non Lakeland ones I wrote on them with a permanent marker.

Zoom.

Great idea but not intuitive.

woodhill · 16/03/2021 17:45

Dishwasher rinse aid, so easy to waste it when pouring in

What is not intuitive about it?

Captions / subtitles in (especially) white with no border or backing so they tend to get lost against images.

And the blasted drop-down menus at the top of pages, too. The latest "upgrade" of Mozilla Firefox now has those in grey on white without any border.

LibreOfficeWriter still has a grey box with a border and black writing, and it is just so much easier to read.

My 83 year old mum uses it without any issues

Yes agree and because of those issues I usually record the foreign language films and/or TV series on my small 32” Freeview TV so that I can rewind if I’ve missed some dialogue. 🙂

I've just got an ergonomic keyboard with a separate number pad, the pad is great to use but the cat keeps sitting on it and opening up the PC calculator.

Anyone who learned to program in BASIC got adept at using the number pad, in fact I don't think early computers had numbers on the top row of the keyboard.
