Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

Ahh the shallow pockets!!Angry

Gurufloof · 14/03/2021 08:28

Can't you stand/prop it upside down so it all gravitates to the open end

Rounded lid, not impossible though it doesn't help, the squareness of the bottle and the slightly too big for my hands size of it make it a perfectly useless shampoo bottle once about half has been used.

LadyEloise · 14/03/2021 10:02

LemonDrizzles I agree re dark lining in a handbag.

Twillow · 14/03/2021 10:09

@DahliaMacNamara

Why in the fuck have they stopped putting the little plastic lids on top of pots of cream? Are we now only meant to use exactly 150ml or 300ml of cream?
You have reminded me I want to order some of these@ Single use plastic isn't good so I'm happy they are producing less lids. www.amazon.co.uk/Scoolr-Reuseable-Glassware-Dishwasher-Microwave/dp/B078XD6JGR/ref=asc_df_B078XD6JGR/?hvlocphy=1007033&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=309920189752&hvpone&hvlocint&hvpos&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-565315736575&hvrand=2283306772582954680

Lidl wet wipes packaging. The actual packet is fine, but the sticker seal on a new pack is impossible to open without scraping my fingers on the plastic lid! It's so close together, make the lid bigger or the sticker smaller. I end up using tweezers to lift the tab and pull it off. 😠

londonscalling · 14/03/2021 11:15

When you take your kids out to eat and they ask for mayo, vinegar or ketchup etc. They bring over a bowl full of individual packets where you tear the side. I can never get them open!

londonscalling · 14/03/2021 11:18

@AlanThePig

Also, its 2021. WHY are we still fighting cans of corned beef with keys? WHY!!?

Also, has anyone ever successfully peeled back bacon film using the little lifted bit on the end without it breaking? I haven't.

Yes it's 2021. Why are we still eating corned beef?

ginghamstarfish · 14/03/2021 11:18

Too many things to list. I often wonder how 'designers' get their jobs, and marvel that they are paid at all for some of the things they come up with.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/03/2021 11:27

Tresemme shampoo and conditioner bottles. Too fat to hold, too stiff the squeeze and an absolute fucking bastard if you drop one on your toe.

Designed by a man, I'll bet. DH often buys things like computer mice that he thinks are great, but the 3 other people in the house (all women) find too big for their hands.

CounsellorTroi · 14/03/2021 11:57

Paper bags of flour and sugar. Less plastic is great of course but why do things like pasta still come in robust plastic whilst the things that make the most mess if there is a hole in the bag (sugar and flour) come in thin paper...

Homepride flour comes in sturdy, refillable cardboard boxes with plastic lids.
**@OkOkWhatsNext

I've got a plug with the twisty opening knob that's never worked since the day it was fitted. I solve it by tying a length of dental floss around the stalk of the plug and leaving the length trailing out in the water to pull at.
@thenightsky and @okokwhatsnext

Can you remove your bath plugs? If yes, see if they have a screw base. If they do, you should be able to turn the screw to lengthen the plug and it should then be long enough to be pushed up by the lever in the plug hole.

Tisgrand · 14/03/2021 15:42

@NeverRTFT Another possible solution to your computer keyboard problem is a left-handed keyboard, ie the numberpad is to the left. I work in accounts and am left-handed and this has been a godsend for me, previously I had to use the numbers at the top of the keyboard, not great for inputting large amounts of numbers.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

Does anybody use Smol dishwasher tablets/laundry pods? My DB was at university when they made the cardboard boxes childproof. He lived with three engineers and it still took them a whole morning to work out how to open them!

And whoever said about the Tesco Finest cold meat packets, yes, they're stupid.

100% with you on the new SMOL packaging. I still haven’t worked it out 🤦🏼‍♀️😂
sueelleker · 14/03/2021 16:32

Yes it's 2021. Why are we still eating corned beef? Why not? My husband loves corned beef and pickle sandwiches in the winter, and corned beef with salad in the summer.

SnugglySnerd · 14/03/2021 17:54

Totally agree about bags with dark linings, really annoying!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 14/03/2021 18:17

bags with dark linings
I once had a striped fabric bag and the bottom stripe was yellow. It was like having a light down there - bloody amazing!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/03/2021 18:18

Omg l thought l was the only one who wanted a bag with a light lining.

I’m sick of literally fumbling in the dark.

My mother once had a handbag with a light lining. It didn't stay that way. She used it as a living demonstration of exactly how grotty a bag can get after you have used it for a bit.
hangsangwitch · 14/03/2021 19:18

why in gods name do they not sell cream in little screw top containers like the ones for 1 pint of milk?

Buggersticks · 14/03/2021 19:53

The cutting edge on my greaseproof paper box. For a start it's on the upper lid and the best way to tear off is downwards, so I end up with a very messy raggy edge that looks like it's been cut with a spoon. Gets right on my tit ends that I always have to use the damn scissors. What's the point?

I only buy bags with pale linings. I currently have a rigged up prototype of a fridge door style light. Its a pen light that I clip on the inside of my bag and press the on switch when I open the bag. I just need to figure out how to get one that comes on when I open the bag (like a fridge door.

They do...

Just not in the supermarkets, where 1 or 2 p in packaging costs makes a big difference to margin.

CheesyWeez · 15/03/2021 14:28

MacBook Air, the two-and-only USB ports are too close together so you can't plug in your scanner/ipod/flash drive/charger at the same time.

I agree, there is no greater comfort food on a cold night than corned beef hash with a fried egg on top.
