Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

@sashh

I've just got an ergonomic keyboard with a separate number pad, the pad is great to use but the cat keeps sitting on it and opening up the PC calculator.

Anyone who learned to program in BASIC got adept at using the number pad, in fact I don't think early computers had numbers on the top row of the keyboard.

The keyboard is fine - its the cat that is the poor design.

Greenhouses that have a lip at the entrance so you have to struggle to get a wheelbarrow or wheelchair in. There are a few makes that don't but not enough.

And I have a two compacts, one Bobby Brown and one Estée Lauder (a bronzer and a powder) I use them nearly every day and still can't work out how they open! A design nightmare!

@GuyFawkesDay and @SwedishEdith

You need a Joseph Joseph toothbrush holder. Fits 4 or 5 electric toothbrushes plus toothpaste. Changed my life!

The toilets at work . They have a flush operated by waving in front of it. However from as soon as you enter the cubicle it flushes repeatedly. It’s a bit disconcerting having your lady bits washed mid wee 😭😭

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/03/2021 15:53

Oh, Dudley Duoflush toilets. You have to hold down the flush lever to the very end of the short flush or they simply do the long one; but if the short flush didn't get the paper to go away, they won't give you another short flush and you have to wait for the cistern to refill completely before you can try again.

I never know which is which. I randomly press them, so will NOT be making all the water savings I could.

Oh, that may indeed be what I need. Thank you!

I thought that but I was put in my place by the Her Fuzzyness, I am only the slave of the puss and must obey her whims.

Bloody hell, I've got Stockholm syndrome! Maybe all cat slaves owners have.

@LemonDrizzles

- handbags that are dark inside and I can't find anything
  • female clothing with no pockets or small pockets
My OH bought me one of these.

www.amazon.co.uk/SOI-Handbag-Light-Lighting-Your/dp/B00ENMYEGC?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I have never felt the need of such a thing but maybe it might work for you.

OMG I had no idea how bloody expensive it was. I feel really bad for not using it now.

JustNotFunAnymore · 19/03/2021 11:32

I've got one to add as I'm doing my big clean today. The lids of shake and vac bottles. For something that is likely to make a huge mess if spilled they've put no thought into the security of the lid.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/03/2021 11:38

I have a feeling that comes with the words "she said bitterly" after it?

Crankley · 19/03/2021 12:10

Boxes of Fairy bio pods with a childproof lid. They are also Crankley proof since I have never been able to open the lid and have to hack at it with a big knife until the lid falls off.

Same with vacuum packed meat. There's a tiny lifted corner from which you are supposed to rip off the plastic. Invariably it doesn't move and big knife comes to the rescue again!

The new Lenor Outdoorables. Good grief the smell. I had to re wash our bedding

Oh bugger. I've got some coming on my Tesco order in 2 hours.

This is where bad design leads us, I buy a £600 handbag that I don't bloody want just give me pockets, then i have to spend more money on a light so I can see inside it.
If I had just had the same amount of useful pockets as the blokes, i wouldnt need a bag or light arrrrrgggghhh

daisyjgrey · 19/03/2021 13:04

The Boots website.

catsandchaos · 19/03/2021 13:44

@thenightsky you might like it? But I found it totally overwhelming. So strong. Going to use it up by mixing a small amount in with my usual Fairy fabric conditioner

poppycat10 · 19/03/2021 13:45

@PetraRabbit

Haven't read the whole thread, but those huge white plastic loo roll covers you get in public toilets- the ones that only allow you to pull out one tiny square of paper at a time and only work if you do that at a snail's pace with extreme care. I never understood how they got past the initial sales demonstration to be purchased by anyone.

Whatisthisfuckery · 19/03/2021 14:16

The person who designed my slow cooker has obviously never tried to use it, especially on a gas hob. The light as a feather pot has no handles, it won’t stay still, and on a gas hob it just tips over. You have to hold it still to stir using oven gloves, which is not exactly safe. As a design it’s shite and I’d rather just use another pan. Complete waste of time.

I would say almost any piece of kitchen equipment designed by a man, who neither has to use nor clean it.
Fridges with numerous bits of plastic connected with the shelves - after cleaning you are invariably left with one bit that doesn't appear to fit anywhere. Food processors and ovens also fall into this category, although perhaps without the leftover bits.
All cars that do not have anywhere for a handbag. I have taken to strapping mine into the passenger seat via the seat belt as I usually drive alone.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/03/2021 14:22

Any kitchen device which has hollows pointing in both directions so that when it has been washed you can't leave it to drain without at least some water still collecting in it.

Kids lunchboxes with separate bits! This!!!
CornedBeef451 · 19/03/2021 17:52

We just bought a perfectly normal looking, windows laptop for homework type things. I hadn't noticed before ordering but the letters on the keyboard are red on black and it is backlit with a red light meaning I somehow can't actually see the keyboard to use it.

After some frantic googling on my phone it seems you can turn it off but you have to do it every time you use it, the default setting is glarey as fuck and I can't see the F keys to turn it down!

sashh · 20/03/2021 06:41

@PetraRabbit
Ben Elton used to do a bit of comedy basically saying, "this is good practice foe pleasuring a woman.

Oh and Dyson driers in accessible toilets. You can't use them unless you are standing, you cannot hold onto anything and you have to be above a certain height.
