Poorly designed things that make using them difficult?

Spice jars, who in hell has designed the dimensions of spice jars? What measurement of spices does one usually find in a recipe? Teaspoons. What can you not quite fit in a spice jar? A fucking teaspoon. Whose bloody bright idea was it to design a jar that makes it hard to dispense the most common measurement of the ingredient contained within?

Ahh, that’s better, I needed that rant.

Go on, rant away. What poorly designed thing makes you angry inside?

Lawn mower with the stupid safety cut off handle.
My hands aren’t big enough to hold it compressed comfortably and they end up so sore so I ended up using an old dog collar defeating the whole point of it.

@NeverRTFT
I have this one, which is great as I can swap which side I have the number pad and mouse www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Ergonomic-Desktop-Keyboard-Numeric/dp/B00EO4NN5C/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=microsoft+ergo+keyboard&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1615642116&sr=8-3

@popcornsong

Garlic crusher victims. Have you tried frozen crushed garlic? Game changer!
I buy that. It comes in little boxes in the frozen veg section at Sainsburys. I also buy the frozen chopped basil and they do cgipoed chillies.
Cushionsnotpillows · 13/03/2021 15:35

@Blursula there's loads of nail clippers with catch trays! Two seconds on Amazon brought up heaps of options.

@RobBeckettsTeeth 😂😂😂

MaryBoBary · 13/03/2021 15:55

Cat food pouches. They are impossible to open without a spray of gravy going everywhere.

londonscalling · 13/03/2021 17:22

The plastic bottles that they now use for ketchup and mayonnaise etc. There's always loads left in the bottom that you can't get out!

londonscalling · 13/03/2021 17:30

I just LOVE these iced coffees. Can't get the bloody things open though ...

Ovens! My mum's 70s oven had a top that slid out. Like an upside down shelf that protected the top of the oven. You could slide it out and clean it separately. Now I break my back/arm trying to reach the grease. 😡

londonscalling · 13/03/2021 17:36

@DahliaMacNamara

Why in the fuck have they stopped putting the little plastic lids on top of pots of cream? Are we now only meant to use exactly 150ml or 300ml of cream?

I noticed that the bigger lots have them but not the smaller pots. Quite often I'll take one off the bigger pot in the supermarket and put it on the smaller one (they still tend to fit)!

DahliaMacNamara · 13/03/2021 17:44

None of them have lids around here, and I'm being geographically very dutiful with my shopping at the moment. When they first began to disappear I had a minor stash from bigger pots, but they've dwindled to nothing now, making cream storage a matter of huge suspense.

Tomasinabombadil · 13/03/2021 18:29

@mildlymiffed

Douwe Egberts coffee bottle. Impossible to lever the lid off easily.

Only buy it as it's dp's fave. But now refuse to make him a cuppa as it is the most irritating lid I've ever come across. Who designs these things?!!

Yes I agree, the first few times of opening I manage to fling/ping coffee all over the counter top.🙄 I do save the jars to past onto a friend who makes scented candles, these jars are perfect.🙂

My favourite was when my dad was given a series of tablets to manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease. He needed to get them out of the blister pack and cut them into quarters each day so he could take the correct dosage (a quarter of a teeny tiny tablet every 3 hours).

After much zinging of pill fragments around the place, I had to come to the house to administer the pills myself. Since they were only prescribed for people with a moderate to severe Parkinson's tremor, we were both amused..

dementedma · 13/03/2021 18:45

For problems with shampoo and conditioner, use a solid bar. Rub on head. Job done.
For hand wash, use bar of soap.
Problems solved and plastic reduced. Win win

Changeforchangessake · 13/03/2021 19:11

@Whatisthisfuckery

Tresemme shampoo and conditioner bottles. Too fat to hold, too stiff the squeeze and an absolute fucking bastard if you drop one on your toe.
Yes 👏
Veryverycalmnow · 13/03/2021 19:19

Plastic tubs/ lids that go out of shape after use/ washing up so the flip flap lids don't flippin fit.

JustNotFunAnymore · 13/03/2021 19:22

@Slavetoboys

The option to turn my dishwasher on via WiFi - if I’ve managed to load it, put a tablet in and shut the door why would I turn it on via WiFi 😡
Dh bought a fancy washer/dryer partly because it had the option to use an app to access loads of additional wash cycles. Except it wouldn't work on an Apple phone (mine) and whilst it did work on his android when he updated the app it no longer worked. So I've never used it. Worse is he bought a dishwasher with the same function. To be honest it's THE WORST electrical appliance we've ever had. It's less than two years old yet we've had to have engineers out 8 times to it now.
caspersmagicaljourney · 13/03/2021 19:44

@TrashPanda

Tesco spice jars are too small plus they have shit plastic lids that smash when I inevitably knock them out of the cupboard. Sainsbury’s ones are much better so now I buy from there first and then use Tesco ones as refills
I buy mine in M&S. So much better, with wider access and you can refill them with herbs and spices from wherever you want.
Blursula · 13/03/2021 22:44

@Cushionsnotpillows well I never

LavenderDiamond · 13/03/2021 22:52

@Chicchicchicchiclana

The peel off cover part of my daily disposable contact lenses. Usually peel off part of the cover of the next lens in the pack.
@Chicchicchicchiclana

Don't you break them off as singles first?

UnderperformingSeal · 13/03/2021 23:01

Cooking sauce jars with the recipe on the underside of the label, so you have to peel the damn thing off to read it and find out what else you'd need to buy and how many servings it makes. I'm looking at you, Sainsbury's, but I bet the others do this too.

Gurufloof · 13/03/2021 23:45

And another, a tea tree shampoo I have in a square bottle, not so bad at first, but now theres a third left, I need hands of steel to get any out. I will decant when I have a better bottle spare.

Can't you stand/prop it upside down so it all gravitates to the open end?
Blyatiful · 14/03/2021 05:08

I have an oven that doesn’t have a timer, but it will tell you how long the oven has been on for.
