Has anyone experienced it?
I’m currently sending my head backwards and forwards because I thought “Vimto” was “Vimpto”

@RowanWeston

Primark used to be pronounced Preemark but nobody else I know remembers this.
Everyone I know called it Preemark!
LifesLittleDeciders · 09/03/2021 23:41

Apparently it’s ‘remember’ and not ‘renember’

I’ve always said it with an N and no one corrected me until we’ll into my 20’s?!

LifesLittleDeciders · 09/03/2021 23:42

@RowanWeston

Sorry, do you mean Primarny?

LifesLittleDeciders · 09/03/2021 23:42

Or Primarni😂

I have been thinking about watching the Hillsborough tragedy unfold and I’m still convinced we stood around watching it as it happened

Obviously we didn’t (as i leant yesterday) but my recollection had shifted so much if the subject came up I would have remembered it this way

How odd I wonder what else I have pieced together

I know that witness statements through can be vital to a police investigation can also often be unreliable as people often will piece together what they didn’t witness

It’s very interesting

honeylulu, The line Frankly my dear I don't give a damn IS spoken in God with the wind. Take a look at the clip on youtube.

sashh · 10/03/2021 01:13

My parents are both convinced they watched the Hillsborough disaster happen live, but it was never shown live in the U.K. The footage you see was taken from the BBC who were recording highlights to be shown later on Match of The Day.

It wasn't supposed to be shown live in the UK. It was being shown live in Ireland. When the disaster became apparent the snooker was interrupted for Hillsborough.

When the independent panel released their report it went online with all the documents (it was taken down for the trials but not put back up) I read some of the witness statements from people who lived near the ground. One family had invited some men in from the ground (I think the car they came in was parked outside) and watched it unfold.

If/when it goes back online it is worth reading but do have some strong tea and some tissues to hand.

I’m totally thrown by the location of New Zealand in relation to Australia. I could have sworn it was at the 2 o’clock position, not the 4 o’clock. I even remember discussing it with DH on holiday lying next to a pool, because I was trying to work out how the climate was similar to the U.K. when it was closer to the equator, and comparing to the Australian climate.

I can only assume pp was correct and I was remembering seeing it in a box on a map, rather than on a globe.

And I could kick myself for that because I remember a couple of years ago laughing when I found out that a lot of people think Shetland is just west of Aberdeen (due to boxes on maps).

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/03/2021 01:36

I remember seeing Hillsborough on Tele. I remember as clear as day I was up stairs listen to my tapes and I went down the stairs and saw it all unfolding.

BitOfFun · 10/03/2021 01:42

My memory of Hillsborough is clear. I was on a "date" with a boy from the next town up, and we had just got to his house in the afternoon after a walk. It was on the TV, but whether it was live or a news report, I guess I can't say. They had stopped the match, and I saw Grobelaar and other players looking confused on the pitch. I think I saw hoardings being used as stretchers. It was clear something awful was unfolding, and my stomach did that awful flip of fear because my Dad was there somewhere.

bottleofbeer · 10/03/2021 02:07

The Hillsborough match wasn't live, but the news was obviously cutting in. The live match was the Everton game.

"We're just cutting over to Hillsborough as there appears to be trouble".

garlictwist · 10/03/2021 02:20

I swear I remember half pennies and going to the toy shop and things costing 20 1/2p. This would have been mid to late eighties. However google says that half pennies didn't exist then. I'm so sure they did.

BitOfFun · 10/03/2021 02:23

Thanks @bottleofbeer, that sounds about right.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/03/2021 02:26

I remember half pennies, too. Ha'pennies as they were known also in the 80s.

The small half penny went out of circulation in 1984
ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 10/03/2021 03:05

@SugarbabyMilly

American Mners who grew up in the 70s....

Some Americans apparently remember a kids TV show they watched called ‘Candle Cove’. They remember it as being very sinister. But in fact, it never actually existed.

That's a creepy pasta story that someone made up. The kids were all staring into static whilst they were supposedly watching their pirate show.

Having said that, I did develop a vague 'memory' of watching Candle Cove after reading the creepy pasta 😂

garlictwist · 10/03/2021 03:07

I was 2 in 1984 so don't think my toy shop memories date from then. Perhaps I just had some old coins to play with or something?

Anon778833 · 10/03/2021 05:48

@ToadsThePeanutButterSnob - ah I see, that makes sense. Some people apparently believe they watched this show (!) I suppose you could get memories mixed up.

AzraiL · 10/03/2021 07:15

Tell me if this is familiar to you:

'So, what does it do?'
'What does it do? Well that's the beauty of it. It doesn't do anything.'

Yes?
DrSbaitso · 10/03/2021 08:12

There do seem to be a couple of possible sources for those lines, though they aren't exactly the same:

I was five in 1984, so don’t remember halfpennies actually being in circulation - but I do remember my parents having a big tin of coppers that they used to bank when it got full, and there were loads of old ha’pennies in that - I can still remember asking what they were and why we couldn’t spend them. Maybe it was a similar thing with you?

And if you bought books from second hand shops they'd often still have the prices on including halfpennies. I'm sure I owned quite a few books that were priced in shillings and pence.
Rokerwriter · 10/03/2021 08:44

To take the debate one step further, it is in fact true that Tudor Crisps (green for cheese and onion and blue for salt and vinegar) were by far and away the best quality crisps in the 70s and those of us lucky enough to grow up in the North East know that for sure!

Rokerwriter · 10/03/2021 08:49

The game at Hillsborough was being recorded for showing on Match of the Day later. They had cameras there so when the events started to unfold, they went to it live. The game itself wasn't scheduled to be shown live but it became a news event.
