Has anyone experienced it?
I’m currently sending my head backwards and forwards because I thought “Vimto” was “Vimpto”

Ooo interesting.. I remember reading about Berenstein bear vs Berenstain bears.

I am pretty sure it’s Looney Toons

juneo63 · 09/03/2021 21:20

I'm sure they did, s and v used to be blue, and c and o were green, I remember it! 70s/80s??

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 09/03/2021 21:27

@MistressoftheDarkSide

Alleged Bible changes are interesting, but may of course just be down to translation issues.

Lion and the lamb is a strong contender, the wineskins verse has turned up as having bottles in it which makes little sense, and the line "forgive us our trespasses" is very contentious in the Lords Prayer......

Different denominations, different bibles (literally - there's a whole bunch of extra books in the RC one), different translations...

and, relevant to the US/UK versions of protestant wedding ceremonies, over here had variants of what is known as the Book of Common Prayer since 1549ish, but the Episcopalians in the US have had their own books since the late 18th Century.

Tl;dr It's not that 'I do' is wrong, it's that the version we see on telly/in films is based upon a different flavour of belief and text to the one expected by people who have only known the Church of England version.

Same way a Protestant is a bit confused why the Lord's Prayer isn't always called that and stops 'part of the way through', whereas a Catholic might think 'Why are they saying all that extra stuff after delivering from evil at the end of the Our Father?'...

Like I said - a ecumenical matter...

TheRogueApostrophe · 09/03/2021 21:29

@AStrangerToHerself

I was also really confused when Johnny Briggs died recently as I remember him dying a few years ago.
Yes, I was the same. When my dh role me I said "he's been dead for years". It must be his on screen death and the fact that he never appeared in any other TV programmes after that (at least that I saw) that led me to misremembering.

The only other thing I can think of is the robber emoji with the swag bag that so many people swear they used to have but has since disappeared. I do recall seeing that emoji but apparently it never existed?

American Mners who grew up in the 70s....

Some Americans apparently remember a kids TV show they watched called ‘Candle Cove’. They remember it as being very sinister. But in fact, it never actually existed.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 09/03/2021 21:31

Yes, I'm sure it is an "ecumenical" matter too. But still very interesting to me - I think the wineskins verse is odd though as it makes less sense with bottles.

For me, it was always "A" Vampire - my brain's logic says there are many vampires, so it refers to one of many. "The" Vampire could be for emphasis, but it boggled me when I discovered I was apparently wrong!

Proseccorella · 09/03/2021 21:35

Another story that blew me away is The Karate Kid's headband - does anyone else remember it as a red rising sun like the Japanese flag? Yet Google it and it's a blue flower!

TurquoiseDragon · 09/03/2021 21:35

@Desperate30

‘Do you take ...’ is not in the wedding vows - it’s ‘will you take’ and the answer is ‘I will’ not ‘I do’ - all on the C of E website! So all those ‘I do’ wedding cards etc are wrong!
That only applies to the CofE.

Different vows can be used elsewhere, so it can still be "Do you" and "I do".

It's always been 'wolf and lamb', although lions are also mentioned nearby - just not juxtaposed. I suppose people remember the alliteration, but you never normally hear sayings comparing lions and lambs - it's always sheep/lambs and wolves.

The King James Bible always said bottles, which was correct: the people of that time did use bottles; it just so happens that their bottles were made from wineskins, which was the most suitable bottle-making material they had at the time. Because modern readers can only think of a bottle as something made of glass or plastic, the newer versions have often 'interpreted' it to try to make it seem more familiar to the modern reader, but to them, 'bottle' meant 'container for liquid' rather than specifically 'something made of glass'. Just like they also sent each other things that were referred to and clearly identifiable to us as 'letters', even though they never used biros or computers and modern paper to do it like we would nowadays!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 09/03/2021 21:41

Thanks @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll - makes all the sense.

Sometimes I watch it all kick off on a couple of Reddit forums about the ME and defenders of the faith - or their memory of the faith - get incredibly rabid.

I think alot of people do remember imagery showing a lion and lamb which can also relate to the "in like a lion and out like a lamb" bit (I think), and if the animals are lying down, well, there you go lol!

Candle Cove is a ‘Creepypasta’ (a made horror legend that gets repeated on the internet). It’s definitely worth a read and is a bit chilling, it’s written as a group of people reminiscing about the show.

But it isn’t a real thing.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 09/03/2021 22:05

Reggae artist Bunny Wailer died a week ago - I saw it on the BBC News website. My first thought was "Why are they republishing this?" - because I clearly remembered reading it several weeks before... Confused

@HarrietSchulenberg they did. I still pick up the green packets thinking cheese and onion and then have to swap them

Kona84 · 09/03/2021 22:16

No, it’s definitely ‘I will’

... and ‘will you promise...’

YouKnowItsTrue · 09/03/2021 22:43

Walkers are based in Leicester and as a kid we mostly ate their crisps. Walkers Salt and vinegar was always green! All other brands were blue for salt and vinegar.

Then Walkers took off nationally and that’s why you are all thinking there was a change to the colour.

AtomicSquirrel3 · 09/03/2021 23:06

I very clearly remember watching a programme in the late 80s/early 90s called The Girl from Adelaide. Pretty sure it was on channel 4. Bit of a teen drama from the very little I remember about it. No one else remembers it and I can't find any mention of it on the Internet 🤔.

MerylStropp · 09/03/2021 23:14

@CounsellorTroi
I have a distinct recollection of a miniseries I watched with my mum in the late 90s/early naughtiest. It was based on a novel I’d enjoyed as a teen called Bride of . It was set in Cornwall. The lead female character was called Favel - they pronounced it Favelle in the programme and I’d always thought it was Fayvel. The lead male character was played by Anthony Andrews. But this series doesn’t appear in his filmography and I’ve never been able to find any reference to it online!
I remember that book by Victoria Holt - read it as a teenager and many of the details have stuck with me ... a good twin/bad twin story, Deborah and Barbarina, and the heroine Favel Farrington. Ghostly violin music being played somewhere in the castle. It would have made a good miniseries and certainly something I would have watched. Interesting, though, that you picked up on the pronunciation, as it's such an unusual name. Confused

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/03/2021 23:22

Lots of authors reinforce that one as well, by using it as a metaphor — Twilight (hardly great literature I know!) has that pair, and somebody else (I want to say Philip Pullman, but I'm not positive on that) says something like "and just for a moment, the lion had lain down with the lamb".

Cactus 1982 Hillsborough was shown live. We had lost our grandmother that morning so all of the family were gathered at my uncles's. We had cousins at both semi finals. We were all transfixed to the tv as it became clear something awful was happening before our eyes.
