Why has ASMR turned so sexual?

Blundgi · 05/03/2021 16:03

ASMR is basically bain tingles when someone is doing something i.e reading a book, page turning, brushing hair, whispering etc.

However, i've noticed a lot of videos have sexual undertones these days.

Take this one for example;

It's a girl doing 'ear licking sounds' and it's basically her giving a bj to the mic.
And then she goes "go to myonlyfans account to see the no hand version.
Like what?? People would pay to watch a woman give a bj to a microphone??

That video just cringed me out

YukoandHiro · 05/03/2021 22:44

I literally have no idea what this is meant to do... I feel nothing

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/03/2021 22:46

I agree OP - it's all gone a bit pervy. I still like WhispersRed most of the time.

It puzzles me because I don't know who all the scanty tops and make-up and flirtatiousness is aimed at. I would have thought the audience was mostly female? But what do I know - clearly they know their market.

CassandrasCastle · 05/03/2021 22:46

Ahhh...I feel for those of you who just don't get it 😜

CassandrasCastle · 05/03/2021 22:50

I mean don't get asmr...not the sexual bleurgh.
There's an unintentional video of a woman doing the Alexander Technique which is soo good. Must link:

I sleep to the radio, used to be a TV but DH feels strongly about not having one in the bedroom... I feel like ASMR should be something I like but it makes me feel a bit weird. Like I’m waiting for something.

Not sure that I’d count a woman daring to have boobs and wear lipstick as being sexual, though. That feels a bit unfair. What if she’s just being her?

You’d think there’d be enough real porn... but the first video linked is definitely weird pretend-BJ shit Confused

CamborneMaid · 05/03/2021 22:53

@Sparklingbrook I love the nail varnish ones she does.

I really enjoy watching the not so famous ASMR channels. Some peoples soft speaking/whisper or touching of the camera can put me to sleep...makeup or hair brushing sounds.

I have an ASMR channel, but I haven't posted any new videos for a long time. My own were mostly page turning, makeup rummage.

I've noticed alot of ASMR has become sexual,it's definitely not for me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/03/2021 23:12

One of the worst things in the world for giving me the heebie jeebies is when you can hear the saliva in the mouth of someone talking on the radio.

If you ever want to horrify yourself, listen to Sherlock ASMR (puke emoji).

Yellowfish2020 · 05/03/2021 23:21

@daisyjgrey

ASMR makes me feel really panicky. The really high spec mic ones make me want to take my brain out and wash it. Genuinely stressful.
I get this if some other 'outside' noise is happening at the same time - like my brain can't cope with it, really, really stressful
Clymene · 05/03/2021 23:28
@Clymene because everyone is different Hmm
I know! And I am expressing my opinion

Fwiw I watched the Japanese sweet thing and I quite liked that. The chopping flower oasis felt like running nails down a blackboard to me so I am genuinely amazed anyone finds that relaxing.

And the whisper red woman looked like she was trying to have sex with me. And like people have said, I can't bear the saliva sounds.

I hate spas and massages though so I'm probably not the intended audience Grin

I didn't know what asmr was but was curious so clicked on the thread. It's been an education!

Wendyhause · 05/03/2021 23:49

I have been watching and listening to the asmr videos for a few years now and some work for me and some don't. I dislike the tapping. It must be popular with many as a lot of the asmr ladies (some men do it too) include at least a little tapping in their videos. I have enjoyed some great relaxing vids but as soon as the person starts to show teasing and sexual hints, showing more boobage etc. I just stop tuning in to them. That is not what I am looking for but the male watchers must love it.
Asmrmania (Tingleplay) Olyesia was my favourite for a couple of years but then she started doing more sexy ones so she is gone now for me.
My all time favourite is Tingting. I have no more insomnia now thanks to her. She is beautiful but so far doesn't try to tease the viewers.
Each to their own and to those who mock it or say it is rubbish, it works for millions of viewers so where is the harm?

Etherealhedgehog · 06/03/2021 00:52

@clymene ASMR doesn't refer to the videos - it refers to a very distinctive sensation best described as a very pleasurable tingling in your scalp that some people feel usually when they hear particular noises, like someone talking softly or paper crinkling. It's strongest when triggered in real life but the videos are designed to trigger the sensation also - so it's not really a matter of liking or disliking them, and it's certainly got nothing to do with spas Grin Either you feel the sensation or you don't. It's very much something you would know if you had it - generally people who have ASMR read about it for the first time and say 'wow, is that what that is, I kind of assumed everyone felt that but no-one ever mentioned it so I wasn't sure.' And everyone else is like !!?????!???

sweeneytoddsrazor · 06/03/2021 02:52

I like littlemecarmie and Semidecoco, but nothing beats Dr James Gill

Moelwynbach · 06/03/2021 02:55

Id like to get it but just don't.

3CCC · 06/03/2021 10:58

@Wendyhause I agree I don't get the tapping thing or when they brush their hands over stuff

Clymene · 06/03/2021 11:01

Ah okay. Yes I do get that @Etherealhedgehog - just these videos don't do it for me. I have one of those head spider things and I like that.

Etherealhedgehog · 06/03/2021 12:00

@clymene yeah the majority of videos don't do it for me either and for those that work it's pretty weak but still nice!

M0rT · 06/03/2021 12:08

I only get the tingling from physical touch in real life, but I do listen to them for going to sleep.
If people use them for getting to sleep I can also recommend the videos accounting practices put out on new policies or tax changes.
It isn't the purpose, but they are very effective at making me nod off anyway!

Bluebell878275 · 06/03/2021 12:33

Goodnight Moon is one of my favourites..she is so talented! The video she did of her and her partner going about their day picking pumpkins was lovely. GentleWhispering was one of my firsts..tapping those stick on gem things gives me the shivers. I alternate between ASMR and audiobooks to help me sleep.

Bluebell878275 · 06/03/2021 12:38

I avoid the sexual videos though..it feels wrong and it's not why I watch them.

hollyandkit · 06/03/2021 12:48

I love SouthernASMR's shopping videos! Some of the shops in the US are fascinating, they have so much stuff, especially round their holidays. You wouldn't believe the range of crap you can buy for St Patrick's Day for example, mind boggling. Not keen on the tapping/whispering stuff that others do tho.

megletsecond · 06/03/2021 12:51

canof there's some old gentle whispering origami videos. And towel folding.

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 06/03/2021 12:53

It also gave me a real false sense of security about cranial nerve exams.

When I had one in a and e with concussion it was a far less pleasant experience.

ZoobyZoobyDoo · 06/03/2021 12:54

Way too porny now.

BabyPotato · 06/03/2021 13:01

I bloody love ASMR. It's my guilty pleasure. Grin I watch it loads to chill me out and fall asleep. But I absolutely hate the porny ones. They're so cringey, and it gives ASMR a bad name. If you're going to do what's basically porn, just own it and get on PornHub instead. (I think some of them already have?)

TirarADeguello is brilliant. He's one of the slightly weirder ones, but his acting is so good and the videos in general are ridiculously entertaining and interesting. Also Dr T is an ASMR genius.

WrinklesShminkles · 06/03/2021 13:11

If you think ASMR is sexual then you definitely don't experience it. I get slightly annoyed at it being described as tingling because that does sound sexual. I'd describe it as more of a sleepy buzz. I think the YouTube channels that have gone sexual are basically trying to broaden their market, but it's a mistake IMO as sexy ASMR is a contradiction in terms to me.
