Why has ASMR turned so sexual?

Blundgi · 05/03/2021 16:03

ASMR is basically bain tingles when someone is doing something i.e reading a book, page turning, brushing hair, whispering etc.

However, i've noticed a lot of videos have sexual undertones these days.

Take this one for example;

It's a girl doing 'ear licking sounds' and it's basically her giving a bj to the mic.
And then she goes "go to myonlyfans account to see the no hand version.
Like what?? People would pay to watch a woman give a bj to a microphone??

That video just cringed me out

ASMR makes me feel really panicky. The really high spec mic ones make me want to take my brain out and wash it. Genuinely stressful.

Etherealhedgehog · 05/03/2021 19:38

Ooh gonna make a list of new channels to check out. I mostly watch Gentle Whispering and Water Whispers Ilse (not very active anymore) and got great tingles from one called Miss Synchronicity but unfortunately she edited/took down most of her straight ASMR stuff and her channel is now super hippy healing stuff.

And the sexual stuff - bleugh - it's 100% not surprising though. I'm sure there are plenty of guys getting off to even the channels that aren't explicitly sexual so this is the logical next step.

Latte ASMR

Notanotherhun · 05/03/2021 19:42

Latte ASMR is amazing. End of. I feel so cosy and safe when I listen to her.

Florelei · 05/03/2021 19:44

Yeah I love ASMR. However I have noticed that it’s become more sexual. That’s not for me.

I love Whispersred and Myaling.

shouldistop · 05/03/2021 19:44

What is ASMR? Relaxing sounds or something?

sabrinathemiddleagewitch · 05/03/2021 21:21

@Florelei

I love Whispersred and Myaling.

Yes! They are my two favourites. Along with gentlewhispering and littlemecarmie
justanotherneighinparadise · 05/03/2021 21:33

I’ve just googled and it’s very weird Confused

RabbityMcRabbit · 05/03/2021 21:38

Never seen the sexual stuff tbh, I subscribe to artists I like and have never come across any of the sexual stuff

Titsywoo · 05/03/2021 21:39

I prefer unintentional as all the whispering is very creepy. I always got this as a child and throughout my life but it was just feeling a bit mesmerised and relaxed when people were typing or shuffling paperwork or whatever. I wasn't sitting there rubbing one out at my desk while my boss did his filing. The idea that it is sexual really annoys me. I saw one one youtube with a woman massaging her friends shoulders and it was hugely suggestive and sexual - not my thing at all.

RabbityMcRabbit · 05/03/2021 21:39

@justanotherneighinparadise it's not for everyone however it has helped me enormously when my mental health is bad, I can't sleep etc. Better than taking meds to help you sleep.

RabbityMcRabbit · 05/03/2021 21:42

@Clymene because everyone is different Hmm

Pulledamonica · 05/03/2021 21:46

I hate asmr. One of the worst things in the world for giving me the heebie jeebies is when you can hear the saliva in the mouth of someone talking on the radio.

Gubanc · 05/03/2021 21:49

To me Gentlewhispering was always quite sexual, loads of lipstick, slightly parted lips, tits on display. She may have toned in down since having her baby.
There are loads more out there who are less known and less sex-y.

idontlikealdi · 05/03/2021 21:51

That reaction has always been sexual to me, it didn't have a name until about am18 months ago but I only get the response in certain city around, nit watching you tube videos

Gubanc · 05/03/2021 21:53

I agree, 'mouth sounds' is just disgusting.
Daisychainsandglitter · 05/03/2021 21:54

I've come across this. Like PP I tend to stick to established artists like Gibi, Gentle whispering etc to avoid it.

Gubanc · 05/03/2021 21:54

I like Behind the Moons, she talks in a normal tone, not with 2 second gaps between words. And doesn't whisper too much (whispering is freaky imo).

Sparklingbrook · 05/03/2021 21:56

I love SouthernASMR. Nothing sexual about tidying the shelves in Dollar Tree and it sends me to sleep.

2020iscancelled · 05/03/2021 22:02

Ugh yeah makes me incredibly uncomfortable.

I don’t like the sounds anyway, leaves me cold. Hate the whispering too.
I like videos of hair brushing, scratching and massaging neck / shoulders etc.

It’s a strange one for people who don’t experience it. It’s similar to understanding a joke isn’t it, you either get it or you don’t. No point trying to explain, it’s either funny or it is.

AMSR is like that. You get it or you don’t.

shouldistop · 05/03/2021 22:03

If someone brushes my hair or strokes my neck I get tingles down my spine and a nice kind of 'shiver'. But sounds don't make me feel like that

FortyFiedWine · 05/03/2021 22:06

That's perfect ASMR! Always prefer low-tech real life videos. Next best thing to actual real life "accidental" ASMR.

Can't bear the sexualised stuff, overly staged repetitive actions, tapping on everything, or fancy binaural mic setups.

RebeccaCloud9 · 05/03/2021 22:15

I hate the sexual stuff too - it makes it seem like all asmr is grubby but it really isn't!

I love role play with typing/writing or spa type ones, especially now we can't actually go to a spa! Love GreenBeauty and Myaling, Sophie Michelle too. I prefer soft spoken to whispering and hate the water/tea pouring and gulping. Makes me need the loo as I'm trying to go to sleep!

Kona84 · 05/03/2021 22:36

Personally it’s not for me.
I don’t like whispering.
I used to fall asleep to talk radio when I was a teen but that was normal speaking voices.

My partner relies on it to go to sleep he listens to rain falling on stuff.
But I know he also listens to asmr darling, gibi. And I’ve seen suggestions come up on our YouTube for the role play ones which I really don’t like but each to their own

Rowofducks · 05/03/2021 22:37

I can’t stand whispering even in real life it puts me on edge as do all the other ones. That paper cutting one made my ears hurt.
