to think Ronan Keating can’t sing? Which other famous singers can’t sing?

When I was a teenager I thought Ronan Keating had a great voice (despite not being my type of music) but I think I probably just fancied him. I’ve just heard one of his songs from around 1999 pop up on a Spotify playlist and he sounds like a goat yelping into a Pringles can.

I know lots of pop stars can’t sing for shite but in my head I had him in a bracket of people who can sing nicely - despite probably not having listened to his music for 20+ years.

Can RK sing?

Which other pop stars who people think are decent singers actually turn out to sound like a farm yard animal with trapped wind.

@LemonadeBudget I just saw your post.

So true. :o

Another vote for Elton, Robbie and Gary. Like their music but think they have very average voices.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 05/03/2021 15:38

Gary Barlow.Fuck me that single he brought out recently was toe curling

@DontTouchMyHairISwear

All of these people CAN sing, just not to your individual tastes. It's not the same thing.
I'm not sure about that. I spent years with a vocal coach, not trying to be a popstar just amdram and a couple of paid stage parts. A lot of the people mentioned wouldn't pass through a good vocal coach without a lot of support.

I said Celine Dion because she doesn't use her throat properly. She takes the mechanically easier route through her upper palate and nose! That means she can get power, volume but little sustain and less clarity.

Others have more personality than voice, bit then, like you said, that's a personal opinion. I don't like Dylan but love Tom Waits 😁

I always thought it ironic that Carrie Grant couldn't sing in her "David and Carrie" pop program on BBC childrens channel. She's supposed to be a vocal coach and session singer etc but all her singing was backed up by background singers, whereas her hubby, David, did all his singing as a solo.

icecreamgirl94 · 05/03/2021 15:43

I’d say most really famous pop stars over the last 20 years or so can’t actually sing, they’re either auto tuned beyond all recognition or they do shit warbles like Mariah Carey which is just a collection of strange noises.

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 05/03/2021 15:45

George Michael
Robbie Williams
Ed Sheeran
Celine Dion
Whitney Houston
Michael Jackson

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/03/2021 15:48

In Sir Macca’s defence, he had a great voice back in the day (IMO). He’s getting on for 80!

I like Bob Dylan’s voice.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 05/03/2021 15:49

George Michael?! For shame.

In the bin with you.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/03/2021 15:50

Ian Brown
Liam Gallagher
Anyone who has to rely on false vibrato to disguise the fact that their voice is flat.

KindnessCrusader · 05/03/2021 15:50

All of Take That!

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/03/2021 15:51

“George Michael?! For shame.

In the bin with you.”

I thought that too. Blasphemy Grin

Cocolapew · 05/03/2021 15:52

Beyonce, I have to turn the radio off when she comes on, same as Adele.

LilyRose88 · 05/03/2021 15:52

Bryan Ferry really can't sing. He was hot during his Roxy Music days though Grin

RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/03/2021 15:52

@TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe

George Michael Robbie Williams Ed Sheeran Celine Dion Whitney Houston Michael Jackson
Are you seriously suggesting George Michael couldn't sing???? Have you not seen these performances?
lighteincastlewindow · 05/03/2021 15:53

Watch Cheryl Cole Making Gary Barlow sound good. Honestly it is about the worst I have ever heard:
The Queens Diamond Jubilee Concert - Gary Barlow And Cheryl Cole

Pukkatea · 05/03/2021 15:53

Yeah people are really confusing can't sing with I don't like that artist.

Beyonce? Reallllyyy?

lighteincastlewindow · 05/03/2021 15:54

I feel sorry for all the young girls who can sing really well and see this filling a role in the industry.

2Sangrias · 05/03/2021 15:54

You might hate Mariah's breathy, warbly style but she's a technically phenomenal singer. Huge range and hits high notes effortlessly.

2Sangrias · 05/03/2021 15:55

A singer I personally love and grew up listening to, but who's voice is really quite shit is Janet Jackson. Still love her, though Grin.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 05/03/2021 15:55

Goose pimples. Every single time.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 05/03/2021 15:56

A lot of this is just snobbery, for example the person who wrote ‘all the voice, X factor singers’
Listen to Kevin Sims singing ‘chandelier’ on the voice or Alexandra Burke singing pretty much anything. They have excellent voices.

VaVaGloom · 05/03/2021 15:56

@DaphneBridgerton

Robbie Williams
Yes Robbie Williams - it's only got worse with age as he now thinks he's Frank Sinatra
Frequentflier · 05/03/2021 15:56

Bille Eilish. All that whispering and mumbling.

Agree about Madonna. V thin and shrill.

beguilingeyes · 05/03/2021 15:56

@GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou

George Michael?! For shame.

In the bin with you.

George Michael was an incredible singer, he blew everyone else off the stage at the Freddie tribute gig and there was some serious competition.

Axl bloody Rose. A strangled weasel.
Joni Mitchell. I acknowledge the woman's a genius but her voice goes right through me.

Elton' and McCartney are both in their 70s. Judge them in their youth. Listen to Tiny Dancer or I Saw Her Standing There/She's Leaving Home/Eleanor Rigby and then tell me they can't sing.
