At my wits end with neighbourhood cats

Name changed as I have moaned about this IRL and don't want my posting history being looked up

I'm sick of them, two or three times a week there is poo in my garden, I keep catching one scratching at the cover on my glass garden table (cover changed twice now) if the bin is full and slightly open I have to remember to put a brick on it or they are in it, an unidentified one vomits in my garden every few months (usually If they've managed to get in the bin), I can't leave the door open if I'm in and out to the car because one of them tries to get in the house, they are a total menace.
If I posted that my neighbour let their dog poo in my garden and damage my property I'd be told the owner is irresponsible but as it's cats it's just what the roaming little shits do.
I've tried those sprays and powders to keep them out but it doesn't help.
I am not being unreasonable to be utterly fed up surely? Any advice on keeping them out much appreciated.

Before anyone starts I know some cats are house cats I'm not hating on all cats just these ones!

Urgh I sympathise, I hate cats they are filthy 😖 No advice as I have the same problem.

Xanadu58 · 05/03/2021 08:27

I heard a suggestion on the radio today that putting rubber snakes in your garden scares cats off ! I'm willing to try this as nothing else has worked for me either.

jeaux90 · 05/03/2021 08:30

I used motion detectors deterrents. They set off a frequency cats hate.

They worked for me.

bulliedbycats · 05/03/2021 08:30

Off to find plastic snakes...

fairydustandpixies · 05/03/2021 08:30

The sonic deterrent things work really well. I used one when I had a giant litter tray gravelled front garden and it was excellent.

bulliedbycats · 05/03/2021 08:32

Oh these sonic things sound good do they need power running to them though?

I have read that sprinkling white pepper may deter cats. Worth a try.

GarlicMonkey · 05/03/2021 08:37

Plant some catnip in your garden. It's a lovely plant & the cats won't soil in their favourite recreation area.

Thank you. Would it work in pots? I don't actually have any flowerbeds. Just a great big litter tray gravelled area and concrete at the back

God that sounds unbearable.

You could try sprinkling mustard powder around the perimeter of your garden. If you have pets of your own you can’t but it makes them sneeze and I would think they would learn to avoid your garden!

CallistoSol · 05/03/2021 08:47

Catnip will just encourage them, it certainly wont stop them crapping in your garden.

Invest in a water pistol

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 05/03/2021 08:51

There lots of other cat hating threads on here, all end up in an argument, all have suggestions on things you can do to deter them. I’m sure you know that though.

Druidlookingidiot · 05/03/2021 08:51

The other thing to try is a motion sprinkler. Cats hate being sprayed with water.

We have a dog who hates cats. If she sees one on the fence she goes crazy. You probably don’t want a dog.... 🦮

AnneElliott · 05/03/2021 08:52

That does sound awful and I love cats. They definitely shouldn't think they have free run of your house? Do you think they are feral? Just what you said about going down the bins etc, I wondered if they are genuinely hungry?

My lot would never dream of getting food out of a bin! Their servant produces food as and when required. Wink

I would agree with the motion detection thing plus a super soaker. They hate getting wet. You could also put a bit of lemon juice in the water as they hate citrus stuff.

And if you've got a local FB page maybe put up a pic and see if you can find out if they do have an owner?

megletsecond · 05/03/2021 08:54

I love the neighbourhood cats but I'm sick of their poop in my garden. I buried 7 plops the other day. I'm the only person with wildlife plants around here so the cats prowl in to catch bugs, I'm happy to chat to them but the poo is too much.

I think I'll have to get a water pistol.

Two of them are definitely next doors cats, the one who vomits isn't allowed in their house apparently but they do feed them. Another is very fluffy and looks well groomed. There could also be more of course. They seem to think they own the place, in the summer it's not unusual to come home to them lying on the drive and they have to be shooed off so I can pull the car on.

I've tried water pistols, I thought about sprinklers but they would just ruin the garden I think.

Motion sensors seem sensible

Get your own cat?

Lots of subjects end in arguments. Not sure I see your point?

@Icenii

Get your own cat?
I'd probably end up with a sociable cat who invited all its cat friends round to play

Sadly we don't have the time for a dog just now although DC would love one. But I can see how it would be a great solution.
