At my wits end with neighbourhood cats

Name changed as I have moaned about this IRL and don't want my posting history being looked up

I'm sick of them, two or three times a week there is poo in my garden, I keep catching one scratching at the cover on my glass garden table (cover changed twice now) if the bin is full and slightly open I have to remember to put a brick on it or they are in it, an unidentified one vomits in my garden every few months (usually If they've managed to get in the bin), I can't leave the door open if I'm in and out to the car because one of them tries to get in the house, they are a total menace.
If I posted that my neighbour let their dog poo in my garden and damage my property I'd be told the owner is irresponsible but as it's cats it's just what the roaming little shits do.
I've tried those sprays and powders to keep them out but it doesn't help.
I am not being unreasonable to be utterly fed up surely? Any advice on keeping them out much appreciated.

Before anyone starts I know some cats are house cats I'm not hating on all cats just these ones!

Not really truth to your name there @DenisetheMenace 🙈

I like you!

Damn 👹

My 8 month kittens not been out yet and the thought of her terrorising the neighbours, shitting in their gardens or going for all the little birds that are around makes me want to just keep her as a house cat. I see the occasional cat around here but not very often and only passing through, so dont want her to be a nuisance.

ThatDamnedDog · 05/03/2021 21:03

I have a house cat that has free range in our garden as we have installed this to our fence. It has the added benefit of keeping other cats out, and my lazy boy has yet to catch any wildlife out there Grin

Get these. They work well. Battery operated. We change the batteries every few months www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01ID8T3IK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

I have a cat but she's a house cat (disabled) but I completely sympathise.

I can't open my windows because my neighbours cats try to get into my house. They try to beat my cat up and it gets right on my nerves.

Next door has 8 cats! Lots of my elderly neighbours also have cats and they fight nightly. The noise of screaming cats is unbearable and I always go out to stop it.

StardewMelons · 06/03/2021 03:21

Just run outside at full speed going "Pssssssssssssst" Grin ..... I have a cat problem, my cat! I live in an area with small backyards, and she jumps wall to wall winding the the neighbours dogs up on purpose. My dogs are spooked by her.. and when shes not crapping in a council planted bush around the corner, shes digging up my plants in pots! So I sympathise!

Hawkins001 · 06/03/2021 03:50

What about wearing disposable gloves when picking it up ?

JustLyra · 06/03/2021 04:41

One of my neighbours has three solar powered frogs things she bought in Poundland. They croak when anything passes them.

They’re not the prettiest things (not going to lie, they’re ugly as fuck actually), but the local cats absolutely hate them. She has two in the main flowerbeds that they’d dig in and one that she moves around every now and again to keep deterring them.

That and orange peel have been more successful for her than any expensive options.

Does the cat jump onto the shed and then over? I'm looking at the wooden rollers but have so many jump points and different levels in the garden.
Runningshorts · 06/03/2021 09:33

I have a preloaded water pistol ready in the kitchen so I can squirt them the minute they enter the garden. A few hits of that, plus orange peel, coffee grounds, sonic deterrent etc... and we are having much less trouble from our local cats. They've been trained to stay out, which is fine while I'm working from home at the moment.
Close up holes that allow them to enter your garden easily (sorry hedgehogs..)
Doing this has turned it into an occasional thing for us rather than multiple cats shitting in our garden every day.
We looked into getting gentle spikes to line the top of our fence. We may need to revisit that when I'm back in the office and not readily available to squirt them with the water pistol.

No he has never managed that as there is a 6-9 inch overhang of the shed roof to the main body of the shed. The adventurous cat at the rear (who I sneak treats to on the shed roof) has never managed this either and she is fantastic at climbing. I have several visitors on the shed roof actually and none of them even attempt it.
We did it quite cheaply, the rolls of green netting from B and Q about £17 each and multi packs of brackets from screwfix.

Here you go, I bought two sets. Works well you just have to change the batteries occasionally

@Mydarlingsleepthief

Urgh I sympathise, I hate cats they are filthy 😖 No advice as I have the same problem.
Cats aren't any more filthy than any other living thing. What a silly comment
FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 13:18

I have a cat that I let out - however she doesn't stray far from my garden, and she uses her little tray before she goes out so I am pretty confident she isn't shitting on and wrecking other people's property.
I absolutely do not think YABU - it is disgusting finding poo on the garden especially when it isnt from an animal you own. Have you tried a water pistol? My dad throws water on cats when they come on his garden...he doesn't get any cats on his garden anymore!

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/03/2021 13:19

Litter tray* damn autocorrect!

LakieLady · 09/03/2021 16:57

@Xanadu58

I heard a suggestion on the radio today that putting rubber snakes in your garden scares cats off ! I'm willing to try this as nothing else has worked for me either.
We have lots of slowworms, which look just like snakes. Cats still shit in my garden.

Next door's cat is the worst. Not only does she shit all over the place, including on the lawn, she's apparently determined to have the robins that are nesting in the hedge for dinner.

I never thought I'd still need poo bags when I lost my dog last year, but I still have to pick up shit before I cut the grass.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 10/03/2021 16:11

... so I've just popped our bins out ready for collection tomorrow and as weather is yuck I took a short cut over the pebbles on our front, to get back to the door. Yup, I've trod in more cat shit.

This is so fucking annoying and actually, yes, some cats are indeed filthy. I'm so fed up of picking it up every other day. Sad

I realise of course there's not much I can do, right to roam, yada yada. But when you spend time, £ and effort in creating a lovely outdoor space, it's annoying to say the least.

diagold4u · 10/03/2021 21:45

I thought cats like to bury their shit???
I once had cat shit in my garden, it was runny. I was furious. Not my cat to be cleaning it up! Do it in your own garden

diagold4u · 10/03/2021 21:47

I've got open soil in my garden at the moment, no grass on top yet, I've chucked moth balls everywhere and noticed the cat goes to my neighbours garden and avoids mine now thankfully!!
