At my wits end with neighbourhood cats

bulliedbycats · 05/03/2021 08:24

Name changed as I have moaned about this IRL and don't want my posting history being looked up

I'm sick of them, two or three times a week there is poo in my garden, I keep catching one scratching at the cover on my glass garden table (cover changed twice now) if the bin is full and slightly open I have to remember to put a brick on it or they are in it, an unidentified one vomits in my garden every few months (usually If they've managed to get in the bin), I can't leave the door open if I'm in and out to the car because one of them tries to get in the house, they are a total menace.
If I posted that my neighbour let their dog poo in my garden and damage my property I'd be told the owner is irresponsible but as it's cats it's just what the roaming little shits do.
I've tried those sprays and powders to keep them out but it doesn't help.
I am not being unreasonable to be utterly fed up surely? Any advice on keeping them out much appreciated.

Before anyone starts I know some cats are house cats I'm not hating on all cats just these ones!

Might just get a dog and not to clean up after him. I mean, wild animals poop on pavements too. It's up to people to look where they are walking. It's only sensible.

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 05/03/2021 17:53

You seem to lack empathy for posters who are finding this a problem and want a solution that won't hurt the cat.

Is that comment for me?

I don’t lack empathy at all and posted early on to point OP in the direction of many other threads detailing various deterrents to try, as she was apparently looking for ideas. I also said that lion poo pellets didn’t work for the person I know that tried them. I think you have to be realistic about how much you can actually do to stop it. Cats do what they want, owners don’t have to keep them in and that’s unlikely to change.

Thelnebriati · 05/03/2021 18:39

I wish owners would make their own fence cat proof.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/03/2021 19:07

I'm amazed people are finding cat poo.

I and neighbours all have cats. I've never found a shit in the garden except fox? Cats bury it and tend to go in corners behind bushes etc. Foxes are a different story, you will find their scat bang in the middle of your lawn Angry

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/03/2021 19:09

Cats bury it and tend to go in corners behind bushes etc.

😂😂😂😂 Can you come and tell them that?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/03/2021 19:16

Fair play IFound. It was directed at you as that's how if I'd interpreted your posts.

Generally I find threads like these have many cat owners who find it hilarious that some of us are picking up their shit. It's not funny it's bloody horrible and I'm doing it too often these days. So I'm a bit pissed off is all Sad

Symbion · 05/03/2021 19:16

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland it's different when they're on disputed territory.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/03/2021 19:17

Which I think is what's happening with our garden

ivfbeenbusy · 05/03/2021 19:17

Get a cat of your own - they'll deter the neighbours ones and also don't tend to 💩 in their own back yard 🤣

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/03/2021 19:18

And mine @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz.
You are not alone. I might start pissing there myself🙄 Maybe I will win😂

It has crossed my mind!! It's annoying as we've had years of gorgeous neighbourhood cats who have been just lovely. They come and say hello when I'm gardening, nap on the car bonnet and we've a certain bush they love to sit under when it's hot. And never poo here! I'd almost been converted to a cat lover 🐈‍⬛!!!

But now we've got a couple of gangsters Angry

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/03/2021 19:28

Mine run away. If they at least came in for a cuddle, I could probably forgive some of the poop🙄
Nah. They just prance around, shit where I didn't lay brambles and evacuate. I might make a bramble fence or something

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 05/03/2021 19:28

No, that’s not me. I don’t like it any more than the next person. There’s nothing funny about ending up with cat poo on your hands when gardening of having to clean it off shoes. But other than trying the deterrents what can you do? I only laugh about cats doing whatever they want, because they do.
I have an issue with the nasty tone that these threads often take, some people are really vile about cats, the subtle mentions of hurting and killing them that are passed off as harmless sarcasm and jokes.
We do have to accept that animals are outside and they do poo.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/03/2021 19:36

We can't do nothing. Cat owners should catproof their fences.

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 05/03/2021 19:40

Maybe. But they probably won’t because they don’t have to.

ViciousJackdaw · 05/03/2021 19:51

These 'itty bitty pwetty kitty' posters are in complete denial. Do they have nothing else in life other than cats or something? It's just I can't imagine thinking that other people shouldn't mind if your cat shits in their garden.

CaffineismyBFF · 05/03/2021 19:55

@jeaux90

I used motion detectors deterrents. They set off a frequency cats hate.

They worked for me.

Would you mind PM-ing which one works for you? I have a couple cats that use my garden as a litter spot and tried a few things with no success

2 cats around my area don't shy away. I've seen them go to the side of my outbuilding and in the flower bedding. I've chased them away or I bang on the window like a crazy lady when i see them squatting in my garden! My son now hates cats because he thinks they all just poo in our garden!
minniemoocher · 05/03/2021 20:00

I'm currently demanding exh beings the dog down for the weekend to shoo off the cat that preying on my (wild) birds. He can pick up dd whilst he's here, got to be his turn at some point to have her (adult, lockdown means she's just stuck here)Grin

Well it did take a while but there it is

That's the post

Fox shit ✔️
Cats bury their shit ✔️

Nonsense

diagold4u · 05/03/2021 20:28

Can you get a garden hose and spray the little shits in the hope they don't come back. Use mothballs. I've had to resort to this, as the stupid neighbours cat comes and does it shit in my garden, I don't understand cats, why not do it in your owners garden??? I've not noticed any since putting mothballs out.

IFoundMyselfInThisBar · 05/03/2021 20:40

I’d call someone calling cats vile, mentioning air rifles and advocating ‘cat killing dogs’ pretty nasty. But obviously I just don’t get the jokes and banter and sarcasm. Silly me. Admittedly this thread hasn’t got as nasty as they usually get. They often end up with multiple deletions or the whole thing gets deleted as ‘not in the spirit.’
It’s not me that’s disappointed here OP, I’m delighted that you didn’t get what you wanted. 😁

Waves white flag. We are. I don’t want them getting into other peoples gardens and I don’t want other cats getting into ours.
We did consider keeping them as house cats but that doesn’t feel right because we have a very nice garden and our older cat lives to bask in the sunshine
We were going to use ugly cat fencing but thanks to a PP, we’re looking at the rolling log type fences now.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/03/2021 20:51

Not really truth to your name there @DenisetheMenace 🙈

I like you!
