...to think dyed grey hair looks shit?

I’m so fed up. I’m 30 and have been going grey since about 22. I’ve got frizzy, wiry greys sprouting out all over my head and I just feel so sad about it. I scrape it up in a bun or use a headband a lot of the time, but I hate all of these wispy greys. I feel like I look so scruffy. If I had straight glossy hair it might be different but I’ve always had very frizzy hair.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about dying it and then I realised...dyed grey hair always seems to look shit! You can always, always see the grey regrowth shining through and the colour looks unnatural. I also think maybe it’s more ageing to dye it, particularly for me aged 30?

Has anyone managed to dye their grey hair successfully and NOT have it look shit? Anyone else gone grey early? Any tips on embracing it? I hate this frizzy streaky grey in-between. I feel like it’s too early to just give up on my hair but I just feel so low. It’s no fun going grey early 😣

As said, you don't know whose hair is dyed, you are only noticing when done badly. But it still might look better than if it was left grey.

Dying your hair isn't having an issue with aging, it's having an issue with the colour your hair has changed to. So that's what you correct.

My hair is growing quickly now I've come right through the menopause. I have to dye mine around every ten days so I use Belle Colour which is only £4 in discount shops. Because my grey is coming through salt and pepper style, it looks like it's been highlighted. I have to tint my eyebrows as well.

In my mid fifties now but dyed my hair with box dyes from around 25 to 50, usually some shade of brown. Decided to go a lighter blonde to mix in with grey roots, then just let it all grow out 5 years ago. This is my hair now. No treatments or products, just shampoo and condition every few days or so.

Join the Sklver Sisters group on Facebook or Grombre UK. They are positive spaces for us with grey hair xx

Exactly. I would have no issue with a full head of white or silver hair but that is not what I have so I dye it.

Has anyone used those colour shampoos?

AlwaysLatte · 11/04/2021 17:23

I think a good salon job is key - never do it yourself with box dyes!

I would go to the hairdresser get a good cut, conditioning treatment and but some good products (shampoo and conditioner to use at home) and see how you feel with your current the existing colour then.

I have had greys since I was in my late teens and now have probably 30%. I have dyed my hair since I was mid teens and people are always surprised when I say I have so much grey hair and don’t seem to believe me. YABU.

I told my friend she looks great but really I think it looks shit. I'm not cruel I'd lie and say you look good.

FireflyRainbow · 12/04/2021 00:47

I've had grey hairs since I was 17. Awful gene's in my family. Just dye it regularly.
