...to think dyed grey hair looks shit?

I’m so fed up. I’m 30 and have been going grey since about 22. I’ve got frizzy, wiry greys sprouting out all over my head and I just feel so sad about it. I scrape it up in a bun or use a headband a lot of the time, but I hate all of these wispy greys. I feel like I look so scruffy. If I had straight glossy hair it might be different but I’ve always had very frizzy hair.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about dying it and then I realised...dyed grey hair always seems to look shit! You can always, always see the grey regrowth shining through and the colour looks unnatural. I also think maybe it’s more ageing to dye it, particularly for me aged 30?

Has anyone managed to dye their grey hair successfully and NOT have it look shit? Anyone else gone grey early? Any tips on embracing it? I hate this frizzy streaky grey in-between. I feel like it’s too early to just give up on my hair but I just feel so low. It’s no fun going grey early 😣

I’m grey as a badger. I got my hair cut short after I had my son because he kept pulling my very long hair. I’ve never looked back. I am nearly 40 though and my actual skin doesn’t look too bad so I don’t think it really ages me. Maybe everyone else thinks I look hideous, though. Who knows? I certainly don’t care. I’m too old and exhausted to care. 😂

I've grown mine out in lockdown and it's very grey. My hair desperately needs cutting. I've got Blonde semi perm at home but worry it will make my hair go a funny colour

19lottie82 · 05/03/2021 17:40

Surely if it was dyed well, you wouldn’t know it was dyed?

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 05/03/2021 17:43

This lockdown has showed me all the people with really good dyed hair who I'd never usually know about! That proves to me that a good dye job for grey hair is very much possible.

VinylDetective · 05/03/2021 18:21

It depends. My skin went paler as my hair turned grey and I think I’d just look “wrong” if I dyed my hair. It’s interesting that people think dyeing makes them look younger. I just see an older person with dyed hair.

I don't think there's anything wrong at all with a man with grey hair.
If you want to do something about it you can get a shampoo called "just for men control GX". It very gradually dyes the greys. My DH was becoming a bit more "salt" than "pepper" and he didn't want to be totally grey before 40. He was really sceptical at first, but it's very subtle. I didn't really notice any change for the first week or so. He still has a smattering of grey which I think looks really natural.

@Cocolapew I love your hair.

Me too, looks so shiny and healthy. Great cut too.

CSIblonde · 05/03/2021 21:04

I did my first ever home dye job last week & the greys took the colour but v slightly lighter so it looks like hilights .The conditioner that came with it has made it really soft & shiny too. I won't bother with salon highlights again. £80 a go is ridiculous when I can get Clairol home dye for £6.99.

Mummaofboys93 · 06/03/2021 01:06

I am dark haired naturally. I am nearing 28 & started to notice greys when I was about 26 to my absolute horror 😂 I haven't got many, but I decided last year that I would start the process to go blonde. So I've opted for balayage & I get it taken quite high with some baby lights. I haven't noticed any greys since as they blend so well with the blonde. I won't bother going dark again now as otherwise I feel liked I'd have to be dying my hair way too often & I am too lazy for that 😅

AnotherSunrise · 06/03/2021 01:18

Have it done by a good hairdresser it won't look shit

CornishPastyDownUnder · 06/03/2021 01:37

I feel you @FourBagsOfMiniEggs -i have the exact same issue with my real hair-it is very thick and dark brown with badger streaks : (
What do every 8 weeks is a bit of a faff but I get compliments all the time and "where do you get your colour done" lol..
So I dye the roots-(roughly 3 inches everytime)dark ash blonde(Loreal excellence creme 7.1)
Then dye the remainder down to to shoulder length bits light blonde (Nordic blonde L1++0.. naturally the ends are always lighter as they get pumelled by the sun anyway so apply dye accordingly..looks fairly natural. I put thin spray of coconut oil on the hair to be bleached an hour prior to the blonde dye as its pretty harsh and it helps stop it breaking.
If I spy any greys a lil blast of Loreal magic retouch in light brown keeps them at bay til I redo the whole head.
Ive been doing this for years but find these2 colour combos work great with my skin which is permatan as i live in QLD.
So with my DD trimming it for me I spend $20 top every 2 months and bulk buy the particular dye packs when on special..
Give it a go!

SoulofanAggron · 06/03/2021 12:46

@Cocolapew I wish I could take a decent photo lol but yep, all is grey/white, but hardcore eyebrows. Grin

I've been a bit overenthusiastic cutting it, will let it grow back a bit. IDK if it shows in the pic but it still has yellow toned bits from numerous dye jobs that I'm trying to get out.

I chopped all mine off again a few weeks ago, it involved clippers Shock

Branleuse · 06/03/2021 12:59

dyed grey hair doesnt look shit, unless its someone with a really elderly face and striking black/red hair with grey roots.
If your hair is very grey, then it does need more upkeep with the roots, and as you get older, its better to adjust your colour to go with your complexion, but I think a decent cut and colour is much more flattering than full grey for most people

woodhill · 06/03/2021 13:41

I don't like my grey hair particularly but I love the freedom of not worrying about those roots every 3-4 weeks. I think it may be thicker with more regrowth around the hairline

woodhill · 06/03/2021 13:41

Your looks good @SoulofanAggron 😀

FreyaFromTheFens · 07/03/2021 23:01

I’ve dyed my greys with a box dye for 15 years as hate hairdressers. It works well but I mainly do the roots/top and you can see the difference in colour. I’m 47 and very grey if I don’t dye it Blush

Skysblue · 07/03/2021 23:35

I dyed mine for years and it looked great. I always had it done in a salon and they used a temporary vegetable dye so it faded and I didn’t get a ‘line’ as new hair grew in. Vegetable dyes also make your hair very glossy and heavier.

You mention frizz. It’s all about money tbh. I can get very frizzy if I use £3 shampoo. If I spent more, eg on Sebastien Penetraitt shampoo/conditiner, plus a little morrocan oil, then it’s glossy and no frizz. But that costs ££ so I don’t always do it.

But yabu to think it has to look shit. It’s about money.

Did you use seminar permanent?
ExtraordinaryQuince · 07/03/2021 23:54

@TableSetting

Plantur 39 Brown colour shampoo and conditioner is what my friend uses and I think I’ll give it a try. It turns her gray a lovely light brown so looks more natural as it is not all the same. Has anyone else tried it? The advert always put me off before.
I've just started using it and am really pleased.
SoulofanAggron · 07/03/2021 23:54

@woodhill Thanks. I see it as expressing our liberation. You look fine as you are. xx

@FourBagsOfMiniEggs When it comes to dyeing my grey hair, I used to do it blonde as I thought it suited my personality then and I wanted to be a blonde. Towards the end it was great, as then the roots were less obvious than with any other colour, and I could get away without dyeing it for a bit longer.

Loads of women dye their hair whether they're grey or not, so you won't stand out or look older just for dyeing it.

FaceyRomford · 08/03/2021 00:06

Cheap dyed grey hair looks shit. If you want a good dye job - it costs.

DPotter · 09/03/2021 14:24

@SoulofanAggron

@DPotter Your natural, normal hair and complexion have nothing wrong with them, they're ok as they are. The more women show their natural selves, the more other women will realize they're normal and ok.

My original hair colour (Dark brown with auburn tones) and complexion looked fine. Sadly the lack of melanin in my white hair makes me look very unwell, ie not normal at all. It's not a case of dying my hair to look younger, but dying my hair so I don't look cadaverous!

Now my Dad also has white hair (the grey gene is from his side of the family) and his complexion can carry of the white hair. My Gran, ie his Mum, was the same. I have my Mum's complexion.

idontlikealdi · 09/03/2021 14:29

I think it comes down to texture. My now mid back length hair is very grey but in streaks, it looks like silver highlights. Because I've kept it long it is not doing that wiry Mr Magika thing and I've avoided the badger stripe.

I really like it, and its in such a better state than when I used to pay £££££££ for highlights that didnt cover the grey anyway.
