IKEA Charging £5 for Click and Collect

GreenlandTheMovie · 02/03/2021 23:13

Seriously? Charging customers £5 per order to collect their own goods from outside the store?

Do they not want business or something?

OP posts:
25yearsnhsworker · 02/03/2021 23:16

I remember when I looked last before Christmas it was 10.00 to click and collect I didn't bother!

00100001 · 02/03/2021 23:17

Up to them.

Will stop the people just doing it for something to do?

Just don't shop there.

ScottishStottie · 02/03/2021 23:17

Well i imagine they arent letting people into the warehouse area to pick their own stuff off the shelves as the normally do, so they have the extra cost of needing to have staff in picking everyone's orders. Think its fair enough...

1sunnyday23 · 02/03/2021 23:20

You don't have to shop there ?

We paid the £10 before Xmas as we wanted some diy things. Yes it was £10 but actually still cheaper than other shops and they were in stock

jimmyhill · 02/03/2021 23:22

Possibly not, when you can furlough everyone and switch all the lights off. It's also not a great customer experience right now.

halcyondays · 02/03/2021 23:22

Yes, Ikea’ works on the basis of keeping prices down by having you collect your stuff from the warehouse yourself normally.

I think it’s free if you spend £100.

You’re lucky to have the option, I’m in NI and our lockdown rules don’t let Ikea do click and collect.

wonderstuff · 02/03/2021 23:22

I did click and collect recently, home delivery was about £40, the service was really good, I'd imagine the admin is costly, you have to phone their call centre when you park and give your order number then they text you when it's ready. To be honest in normal times I'd pay a fiver to avoid having to trapse round the shop and navigate that warehouse.

SunshineThelma · 02/03/2021 23:23

Only a fiver? I'm sure it was £10 the last time I did it. I play it off against the amount I'd have spent on plastic boxes, things from the Sweden shop and 'useful' things I didn't know I needed if I went in the shop.

Quarterback11 · 02/03/2021 23:25

They have to pay staff to get your order, go and collect it, bring it to the collection point, process payment, deal with queries, refunds etc...for goods that are already fairly cheap. The £5 probably doesn't even cover the staff costs.

How do the goods get from the warehouse to outside the store....?
Cactuslockdown · 02/03/2021 23:27

Better than the £40 delivery... Shock

KihoBebiluPute · 02/03/2021 23:29

Yabu.

When ikea is open it is impossible to navigate through the store assembling the items one wants, queue up to pay and get back down to the car park in less than an hour. Two hours is more usual and you end up spending at least a tenner on tealights or a stuffed cuddly panda or kitchen clips or a fake plant that you don't really even need and regret as soon as you get home. £5 is a small price to pay to avoid all that. Totally worth it. And if you seriously value your own time and sanity as less valuable than that you are quite at liberty to wait a few weeks for them to re-open and do the work yourself. The person who will do the job of assembling your order for you deserves to be paid.

seepingweeping · 02/03/2021 23:31

I tried to click and collect. My options were Edinburgh store, store in England and a store in Ireland.

I'm just over an hour away from Edinburgh. I didn't want to travel that far for some blinds and other stuff.

KyotoRose · 02/03/2021 23:35

I’m an Ikea virgin, and the way things are going, I will remain so until their stores open.

I refuse to pay £40 to have a mirror delivered, especially when Made.com only charge £15 for really heavy sideboard-type size furniture to be delivered.

I would click and collect, but they don’t stock the mirror at my local store. I don’t know why I just can’t order it and click and collect it from my local store like with most large businesses. Dunelm piss me off with this too, with so many products only available for pick up from certain stores, and delivery not available on every product.

standingonaseesaw · 02/03/2021 23:35

I agree with you OP. I bought something I needed from them overpriced on eBay, as it was still cheaper than paying their click and collect fee. I don’t know of anywhere else that is currently charging for click and collect.

Symbion · 03/03/2021 00:12

I can't get worked up about this one. Just think of it as a £5 charge for picking and packing. Their stuff is very competitively priced IMO but by all means vote with your feet if you disagree.

Oooohbehave · 03/03/2021 00:34

YABU. I’d be quite happy to pay £5 when Ikea is open to not have to navigate the warehouse TBH. Ikea is cheaper because you pick your own items from the warehouse, it’s their business model.

Angeldust747 · 03/03/2021 07:19

I ordered something last weekend, got there to find the thing I actually went for was not available, so I did an hours round trip and paid £5 to collect some tat I popped in the basket whist I was getting my main item Angry

BertieBotts · 03/03/2021 07:24

Their entire business model is based on the premise that they need fewer employees because the customer takes over the task of moving the goods from the warehouse to the checkout.

So yes, I think it's reasonable for them to charge!

It does mean it's not worth going for a small item at the moment though. Best to ask around if anyone is doing a big order and they can slot one thing on for you. Or just wait until they open, it probably won't be long.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/03/2021 07:26

I don’t see an issue with the charge, hardly an essential item store/necessary drive so people can wait until after.

mindutopia · 03/03/2021 07:26

IKEA gives me a headache. I would absolutely pay £5 (and more) to get what I needed without actually having to set foot in a store.

BertieBotts · 03/03/2021 07:28

Angel, that's annoying! On ours it checks the stock of the store you order from so that can't happen in theory. We are abroad though.

BertieBotts · 03/03/2021 07:31

Ice, it is essential for children to have a bed to sleep in, isn't it? We've had to replace DS1's bed which broke this lockdown. And DS2 is still fitting in his cot but will need to vacate it at some point for the new baby, so we got him one as well.

Things break and children grow so it's useful to have these options.

Happytobejabbed · 03/03/2021 07:35

IKEA don’t seem to get modern shopping be it online, click and collect etc.

Their web site isn’t always helpful.

And as for actually getting the stuff...... Been there, ordered the stuff, got it - eventually - in dribs and drabs.

They don’t make it easy for potential shoppers. You’d think it was in their interest to do so.

Other shops have managed to adapt to changed circumstances.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 03/03/2021 07:36

Meh. £5 rather then £40+ delivery is fine by me. They collect it from the warehouse and bring it out to your car for you, you don’t have to get out until your shopping Mis at the car. It’s a great system, works well and I hope they continue it as an option when stores reopen
