I don't agree that "England has a lushness that Scotland and Wales don't have" - I think it depends where you are. I live in the North York Moors and, while beautiful, they are not what I'd call "lush" and I have only ever seen a thatched cottage on TV.

I agree about the spring though - on Sunday I was sitting outside reading for two hours. It was lovely. I had my coat on but the sun had warmth and I was a great temperature.

It's shit and grey again now.

Murtaghjames · 02/03/2021 06:32

Ireland is more beautiful everyday of the year.

gerispringer · 02/03/2021 06:40

Spring on a Greek island such as Santorini is breathtaking - sparkling sea, wild flowers in abundance the smell of wild herbs, sun washed white houses, a glass of chilled white wine and a meze on a cliff top terrace overlooking the sea.....Difference from the rubbish strewn, fly tipped verges of theBritish countryside! polluted rivers and canals. Before anyone jumps on me , yes I know there are some beautiful parts of U.K.- Scotland in particular, I do love the islands.

Brownteddybear · 02/03/2021 06:57

@Wondermule

YES.

Spring is a much bigger deal in England than in the rest of the UK, probably because of our pagan roots - the whole spring representing fertility thing.

Mayday was a big deal where I grew up and I bloody loved being a Maypole dancer Grin always followed by a sort of beer festival in the barn next door where the parents would all get drunk Confused

England also has a kind of meadow-y, lush softness to it that Wales and Scotland don’t have. It’s very green, and has the fairytale woodland thing going on with the thatched houses and gentle slopey hills.

I'm from one of the other countries you mention and I have to say I agree with you about the lushness of England in Spring. It's quite different to the rugged beauty of Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

I know what you are getting at, it's hard to explain and so I can understand why people are sticking up for the other countries too Smile

Oblomov21 · 02/03/2021 07:01

Spring, the sun, daffodils. Makes me happy.

It’s no surprise - people in the other countries get outraged not just when somebody says something rude about their nation, but when people say something nice about England.

Their fragile patriotic egos can’t bear it so they pop along with their snide remarks to ruin a perfectly lovely and harmless thread.

They should toddle off and start their own threads rather than being so obsessed with us!

Pinkfreesias · 05/03/2021 15:10

I don't think you can beat anywhere picturesque in the whole UK on a beautiful, clear day. I consider myself very lucky to call this my home.

JillsFlapjacks · 05/03/2021 15:18

Driving through Glencoe on a bright, blue-skied April day is hard to surpass, IMO.

We had mean, moody, glowering skies and mist on the way through in the morning, really atmospheric, then brilliant blue skies on the way back in the afternoon. Hard to know which was more magnificent. Think the afternoon just pipped it though when a stag appeared acrest (is that a word?) a hill, just for us. Will never forget it.

I love spring

Yes there is... Scotland is stunning in Spring and Autumn 🌺

Ziga · 05/03/2021 17:48

I’d say Scotland’s miles better.

Wondermule · 05/03/2021 17:54

@Ziga

I’d say Scotland’s miles better.
You would, wouldn’t you?

Scotland is too barren to be lush and fertile looking. It’s nice in a rugged way, but it’s too lacking in trees and greenery to be spring-like.

PrelovedWithValue · 05/03/2021 18:32

Lacking in trees?

From forestresearch.gov.uk

The area of woodland in the UK at 31 March 2020 is estimated to be 3.21 million hectares. This represents 13% of the total land area in the UK, 10% in England, 15% in Wales, 19% in Scotland and 9% in Northern Ireland

You’ve actually gone and looked it up 😂😂

Glencoe in the spring could be a sunny day in Glencoe in the winter, or summer, or autumn.

You need a lot of deciduous trees and flowering plants to really see the change of season, and in my opinion England wins that hands down. Take a deep breath and deal with it.

I will concede that Scotland is better in winter because it gets more snow and the rugged look is quite dramatic 🦌

PrelovedWithValue · 05/03/2021 18:53

Yeah. I live in Scotland and have been to England many times, and was really confused by that comment. So I thought I'd check the facts.

Why is that funny?

It’s funny because it shows how badly the rest of the UK take any compliment of England. I never realised ‘tree pride’ was a thing 😂😂
PrelovedWithValue · 05/03/2021 19:07

What are you on about?

I've not once said Scotland is better than England in terms of beauty. Not once. As I said, I've been to England many times.

You really should stop putting words in other people's mouths, when they haven't said them.

I haven't tried to diminish England. You have described Scotland as 'barren' and that England wins 'hands down'. And you are trying to make out like I'm the one that is taking things badly 😂

I know but the others on this thread have been so touchy!

I could start a thread about anything to do with England and you’d get all the ‘Oh no Scotland/Wales/Ireland is SO much better, just saying’ posts 🙄🙄🙄

PrelovedWithValue · 05/03/2021 19:15

And clearly you are above such behaviour 😂😂

Wondermule · 05/03/2021 19:17

@PrelovedWithValue

I’m really not - I got tired of it and decided to treat them to a dose of their own medicine 🤷🏼‍♀️

Then I got the EDUCATE YOURSELF comments 😂 because I said I once enjoyed maypole dancing.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 05/03/2021 19:28

I don't think I've ever been to England in the Spring but I do love the West coast of Scotland at this time of year , it's the freshness of the air. I lived abroad for a long time and it was one of the things I missed

utter Bollocks

Wales is also stunning in spring and autumn... just beautiful
