Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬
@Ninkanink

I believe the conversation/bunfight has moved on from the poor little salmon-en-croute to the general eating habits of the populace.
Occasional quintuple-carbing - 1/2 of bottle of tequila-necking - whole tub of ice cream eating - etc. ad nauseam, is perfectly fine and fun, well, not necessarily next day, HOWEVER, making this a habit leads to obesity/drunk-tank. Pronto.
I realise that. But it’s what the OP used as her example, so I’m referring to it.

halvedfees · 25/02/2021 08:43
@iggly yes that is correct - I was just thinking that too. It’s not so much food that is the problem, really; it’s more that the average person’s lifestyle isn’t compatible with the average person’s diet in this context.

I really find self-righteousness about food to be particularly distasteful, tbh. Everything in us is programmed to want it, need it and look for as much of it as we can get, so it’s not surprising that a lot of people find it hard to regulate intake.
Agreed. It is about activity, but it is also about calories consumed. Burn 2500 calories a day being active great, but consume 2600 day in day out, you will put on weight.

Yeah but no matter how you are now trying to save this double carb simply doesn't have to mean being over calorie needs for a day or a week even.
As said. Hell of a lot of countries multicarb.

IEat · 25/02/2021 08:51

I’d want potatos with your dinner op

Ninkanink · 25/02/2021 08:55

I just don’t think it’s productive for people to sit around wringing their hands in desperation over others’ eating habits. You’re not going to solve obesity by wishing and hoping that people only knew not to eat their lasagne with a side of garlic bread.

ElizaLaLa · 25/02/2021 08:56

You can also double or triple carb and be underweight. I had 100g of chips last night because I'm watching my carbs/cals but I could have had those in a sandwich thin and been way under the daily recommended calorie intake.

I had a salad with a 52g tin of tuna and a teaspoon of mayo, and later I had 100g of chips. But that's all I ate all day 🤷‍♀️

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 25/02/2021 09:00

I actually totally agree with everything you’ve said OP.

Yep if you are under your calories its fine to double carb.
Bumblebee1980a · 25/02/2021 09:13

If it was over the weekend I would have it with a small portion of dauphinois potatoes (I hate any other kind of potato) and some veg. It's a treat meal isn't it, if homemade.

If I had it during the week then yes I'd just have it with a green salad.

All that mn threads about food do, is show what a deeply ingrained toxic relationship (mostly) women have with food. In both directions.

Christ, it's depressing. It's just food.

I tend to agree with this, sadly.
Ninkanink · 25/02/2021 09:26

Food is one of the great pleasures in life, and I see nothing wrong with that at all. It’s depressing to me that some people see it only as fuel — Fine for them of course, if that how they see it, but it’s not who I am. I like to indulge my senses, and there’s absolutely nothing disordered about that.

Ninkanink · 25/02/2021 09:27

And it’s certainly not toxic either. What a strange notion.

Ninkanink · 25/02/2021 09:30

Oh I think I misunderstood what you were saying! (Only one coffee so far today 😉)

Yes I agree the extremes at either ends of the spectrum are disordered and can indeed be very toxic. I try to keep a good balance for the most part.

On that note, it’s a beautiful day and I’m going to go and enjoy the sunshine!🌻

praecantator · 25/02/2021 09:30

Agree, food is one of the greatest pleasures in life, hence creating an environment, where people are constantly anxious about what they can or can not eat and counting calories (crazy, I could never do that) is royally fucked up.
Said environment is primarily created at home whilst growing up. As a child, you eat what your parents serve, hence installing healthy eating habits is A GOOD THING.

I'm not saying there is? Or that I see it as just fuel. But it is clear that food (liked or not) causes people a great deal of emotional discomfort - whether that manifests as eating a lot or intense restriction.

Every time there is a thread about food, the extremes from both sides show that for many people, it is not a pleasure at all. It is something to control or hurt themselves with.

That's what I find depressing. That we've taken this necessary and sometimes very lovely thing and turned into some kind of punishment tool.

Sceptre86 · 25/02/2021 09:32

I love a pie and chips or a chip butty. My dh will never understand and apart from pizza and garlic bread will not eat double carbs. His loss.

Wowthisisreal · 25/02/2021 09:34

I'm intrigued as to what else you would have garlic bread with if not pasta?

Sunshine and some time outdoors - that is also one of life's great pleasures (for me, anyway).

Sunnydays999 · 25/02/2021 09:40

Does it matter ? I eat for what I need . Sometimes I don’t eat many carbs others I have loads .Do you think you have disordered eating ?

Well yes. But that's not caused by having 2 carbs at once...

On the odd occasion no. However hat do you think burger and chips every day does? (Other double carb options are available Grin)
