Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates

Further to the thread on boiled potatoes, from what I could glean not one person pointed out that you are serving carbohydrates with what should be already an ample portion of carbohydrates in the pastry. We have salmon en croute with extra green veg to fill everyone up. Is it just me or do people not get what a healthy portion (especially carbohydrates) actually is? Don't get me started on garlic bread being served with pasta.......🤬

This is REALLY ingrained in people in France and Belgium. I remember a Belgian friend just staring in amazement at a plate of chips and garlic bread

Double carbs are certainly a thing in both France and Belgium, as well as all over the world.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 24/02/2021 18:49

They do Croque monsieur and chips at Cafe Rouge so that can’t be true about French people!

TomDickAndHarrods · 24/02/2021 18:53

Personally I would never eat garlic bread with pasta or chips with lasagne, or shepherd’s pie or have bread with fish and chips, it just isn’t to my taste or liking, and it has never been a family habit.

But then I might go on to have apple crumble while my chip and lasagne loving friend doesn’t, so at the end of the meal we have both had 2 servings of starchy carbs.

And the French and Belgians eat croissants for breakfast and have bread with meals, and are famous for various baked goods so....

Are you my MIL?

I'm wondering if this pearl clutching disgust at potato with salmon en croute is a nouveau riche affectation?

MIL (who is a particularly offensive type of social climber) still talks about the 'mortifying' time that DH as a child ordered chips with his salmon en croute.

And yet she thinks nothing of eating battered fish and chips, or pie and mash.

Weird.

BonnieDundee · 24/02/2021 18:59

Heaven forbid that we eat anything unnecessary Shock carbs as well ShockGrin

Vepul · 24/02/2021 19:03

My French mother in law makes beautiful potato filled puff pastry pie from Limousin, double carb deliciousness.

Volcanoexplorer · 24/02/2021 19:04

Well who’d have thought it - 27 pages about eating carbs. This thread is so funny 😂

Plenty of 'double carbing' in our part of France. And bread with absolutely everything of course.
RootyT00t · 24/02/2021 19:09

Who doesn't have garlic bread with pasta?

Only on a Sunday though.

The rest of the time we have one green bean between four

WatermelonKisses · 24/02/2021 19:09

Macaroni pie and chips is the food of the gods, triple carbs 😁

ShinyMe · 24/02/2021 19:13

Lol at the idea of Cafe Rouge being a barometer of French eating habits.

Never been to Cafe Rouge but lived in France for 15 years and there was plenty of double carbing going on!
RowanAlong · 24/02/2021 19:40

Love this! We would have had extra potatoes/potato salad with salmon en croute as children, or with quiche.

Nowadays I wouldn’t put them together personally, I’d just have more quiche/salmon if I was hungry! ! I think Mum prob gave us potatoes to make the salmon go further and do for another day - potatoes were cheap but salmon not so!

Dee1975 · 24/02/2021 19:49

Yes it’s two servings of carbs. Not right. But it’s nice :-)

MammaSchwifty · 24/02/2021 19:55

I haven't RTFT but just this evening we were discussing macaroni cheese, chips and garlic bread...

Yes, but hasn't Cafe Rouge gone bust? Our local one has.

Customers probably all dead from diabetes etc.

See! Double carbing is not a good business model unless you are a burger chain.

Potatoes do not make people fat. Pastry on the other hand...

Biscuit
Not Biscuit and Cake ?
Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 24/02/2021 21:22

I had steak pie with pufff pastry tonight and... roast potatoes! I forgot it was a bad thing to be double carbing until i returned to this thread. Tomorrow I'll make better choices. I'll have a crisp sandwich for lunch but only have 1 slice.

Kintsugi16 · 24/02/2021 21:50

You obviously don’t have teenage boys

SionnachRua · 24/02/2021 21:52

Oh god, who cares? The world is going to hell in a hand basket. People might as well enjoy a few extra carbs on the way down.
