To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

Well my dh would not even know how to work the washer at all, and if he by some miracle managed to, he'd definitely not know where to put the detergent. So I think your dh did OK!

NotJust3SmallWords · 23/02/2021 21:16

I'm sure it'll be fine. I wash everything on the same 30 degree cycle. Everything smells nice and clean when it comes out so I assume it's all good.

HotPenguin · 23/02/2021 21:20

If you use reusable nappies the makers often recommend washing at a low temperature (30 or 40) and they say it is the drying that kills the germs.

I wash everything at 30 or 40 unless the kids have sick bug.

CandyLeBonBon · 23/02/2021 21:30

SOMEONE ALERT THE LAUNDRY POLICE! 😱

Changechangychange · 23/02/2021 21:31

Re washing hands in cold water, I’m not sure what temperature your hot and cold taps are set at, but in our house it is the difference between 15 degrees and 35 degrees. Which will make no difference. I do not scald my hands with 60 degree water every time I wash them.

Proper handwashing technique is significantly more important than whether you use cold or warm water.

endoflevelbaddy · 23/02/2021 21:32

I feel a bit sick at all the this 30 degree washing and steeping all your laundry in the Petri dish of a washing machine 🤮
The amount of bacteria on knicker, pjs, bedding, towels! (Unless you're ironing all that stuff and regularly cleaning your machine on a hot wash)

Fine to wash lightly soiled outerwear on a cool wash, but you need to get the temperature up to kill bacteria on anything that might have touched your arse and to keep your machine hygienic.

And yes, DH had to have that explained to him, but I don't expect to have to remind him more than once. He never had to do any domestic jobs growing up where as I had to do everything (not ok, but it is what it is) so I'm happy to show him once, but expect him to crack on after that. I'd be pissed off too OP.

OP I recommend wilkos for super king lovely Egyptian cotton bedding. I also use white vinegar as softener.

Am I the only woman who has the same sweat and yellowing problem but from my own fair person...?

Coughsyrupsucks · 23/02/2021 21:57

I tried everything solve the problem of my sweaty head DH he’s ruined so many pillowcases. Now he gets £1.25 Wilco’s pillowcases and I get the expensive ones Grin That way I can turn the into cleaning rags when his head has trashed them and not feel too bad about it.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 23/02/2021 22:04

I wash bed linen at 30° most of the time - never been a problem

Sumwin1 · 23/02/2021 22:09

I think the issue is you need to buy another bed set OP.

BrilliantBetty · 23/02/2021 22:13

Yes, me too. Things that need a proper wash should be given a proper wash.
There's a difference between a top worn for one day and similar garments being washed on 30/short cycle and dirty items including bedding. Some things need a warm wash to get properly clean. Even if they smell alright (from the added fragrance!)

Mindlesspuzzles · 23/02/2021 22:35

I wash everything at 40°c

BehindMyEyes · 23/02/2021 22:39

Only have white bed linen and always washed at 60 or 90 with a sachet of Dr Beckman Glowhite . May soak pillowcases in bleach depending on bald head sweat . Everything else at 40 quick wash . I don't see the point in washing dishcloths at 60/90 but not your sheets ? 😬 Throw dishcloths out - they are as so cheap .

Um, because I am using my dishcloths to wipe things we eat from but not my sheets? I sleep in pyjamas and wash sheets regularly, they don't get that minging. Personally I'm keener on 40 but 30 should be fine if it's bio.

Throwing out perfectly good cloths is an environmental waste for no good reason.

Tyredofallthis1 · 23/02/2021 23:51

@BehindMyEyes I luffs my dishcloths. They are microfibre on one side and a scrubby mesh on the other and they totally rock. They come out unstained after 60C wash, and just keep going and going. I've had mine a few years now, and they never let me down. I have a bundle, a fresh cloth every day and then wash when I have a full load.

btw Euroscrubby kilo is the best scrubber EVER and gets off all sorts of burnt on rubbish, better than the magic eraser thingies, and doesn't scratch. It's cotton and goes with the rest of the dishcloths and I wouldn't be without it.

I wash my bedding weekly, and it doesn't get intimate with grease, starch and last night's pasta bake so I will normally use a good detergent (Ariel), white vinegar as a fabric conditioner and tumble or line dry. No whiffs.

Seasidemumma77 · 23/02/2021 23:52

Feeling shite that I wash everything at 30c, hadn't realised this was a problem

Greygreenblue · 24/02/2021 00:12

I would be interested to hear what peoples drying methods are. Sun is a natural disinfectant and stain remover. So how you are drying your washing does probably have an impact on what temp you can/should wash at

Greygreenblue · 24/02/2021 00:15

Also, can’t believe I am still reading a washing thread so avidly... when did I get so interested in washing (suspect it had to do with arrival of little humans...)???

FredaFlintstone · 24/02/2021 00:25

I love this thread. All this angst over a wash temperature 😂

If you don't agree with 30 degree washes, look away now.

I was everything at 30. Everything.
Bed linen.
Towels.
Pissed on bed sheets (often, as I have a bed wetter).
Muddy sports kit (with a vanish stain pre-soak).
Underwear.
Ummm...can't think of anything worse but the pissed on bed sheets ought to do it.

The only hot wash I do is a once a month 90 cycle with added soda crystals to clean the machine.

Everything comes out clean and smells delightful. Even the sheets. Plus, saving the environment, turn to 30 and all that.

PeskyRooks · 24/02/2021 00:31

Why don't you make your husband wear a shower cap in bed

Changechangychange · 24/02/2021 01:05

It isn’t, unless you feel you need autoclaved sheets.
Lovely1a2b3c · 24/02/2021 01:13

I agree OP- 'washed at 30; it's still dirty!'

I do sheets and towels on 60C as that's what is recommended by microbiologists etc.

I swear th bottle of liquid i have at home has a very proud exclamation that it can do 40c washes at 30c just as well
Sapho47 · 24/02/2021 01:22

I think this may be like dual carriage way speed limits were older people are convinced its 60.

caringcarer · 24/02/2021 01:40

White bedding and 50 here. Boys bedding in dark grey or navy also done at 50. Do yourself a favour and buy a second set.
