To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

Wash everything at 30 here too!

Frenchdressing · 24/02/2021 05:15

Label on my bedding says 40 max.

This thread is so inexplicably riveting Blush

Mypathtriedtokillme · 24/02/2021 05:30

The soap/detergent is what breaks the fatty layer of bacteria, not the temperature.
I wash everything in a cold wash and hang out in the sun.

It’s all clean.

Childrenofthestones · 24/02/2021 05:37

Well I take mine down to the river with a rock..

waitingpatientlyforspring · 24/02/2021 05:38

We wash everything at 30. In fact our washing machine seems to have stopped heating the water so everything comes out feel cold - but everything is clean and doesn't smell so don't see the issue 🤷🏽‍♀️

Everything gets washed at 30, and some even in cold water. A good detergent doesn't need hot water. If something is particularly soiled I used the pre-wash. Never a problem and all my bed linen is white.

AnitaB888 · 24/02/2021 06:03

Persil says towels & sheets should be washed at 40 deg

Whaaat ! I hope you didn't break lockdown rules just to wash your clothes?

Crazycatstory · 24/02/2021 06:21

I feel your pain op. I live with a man who has the same sweaty head problem. Showers daily, doesn’t use hair product, but pillow looks dreadful and grubby. Don’t know the answer I’m afraid.
On the subject of a second set, dunelm have a good selection at all prices and you can order online.

CrunchyCarrot · 24/02/2021 06:35

Unfortunately common sense isn't that common, OP!

I wash my bed linen at 60 degrees. I cannot use biological detergents, they cause an allergic reaction and I get a horrible red rash. If I was to sleep on sheets washed with biological detergent I'd be very sorry the next day.

Frannibananni · 24/02/2021 06:36

I wash everything on cold, always have. Better for the environment.

I have found the answer to this one! (No it's not 'get a new man' LOL). It is a bit of a rigmarole but it works. Soak the offending sheet/pillow in hot water to which you've added a helping of washing powder, a good squirt of dishwashing liquid, and a good helping of borax. Mix it all up well and leave to soak for an hour or two. I then put that in the washing machine and add the same stuff again, put it on a 60 degree cycle. When it gets to the rinsing, add a helping of white vinegar to the water. Bingo! White sheets again and no yellowish oil remaining!

sashh · 24/02/2021 06:39

My washing machine actually tells you what to put in, so it has a, "bedding and towels" setting. I don't know why more machines don't do this.

Also you need to buy more bed linen.

redcandlelight · 24/02/2021 06:40

I don't know how many sets I have tbh...

washing it at 30 ocassionally is ok. but we all suffer from hayfever and it's recommended to wash bedding hot and on a long cycle to kill and remove dust mites.

MinimumChips · 24/02/2021 06:44

What are you concerned will happen with a 30 degree was? I was almost everything in 40 degrees. All clean, nothing smells, no stains, no one ill.

EatDiamondsForBreakfast · 24/02/2021 06:45

Omg I’m Australian & have NEVER used a hot wash! Cold all the way!! I assure you our clothes are clean Hmm

Have Mumsnet people lost the power of reading or google.

Wash bedding and towels at 60 degrees to kill germs 🦠

Those invisible beasties, that are everywhere.

Can I say, idiots ?

Covidcorvid · 24/02/2021 07:06

I know bedding should be washed at 60, but I’ve done it 40 for the last thirty years. I’m still alive. My sheets haven’t made me ill.

Northernparent68 · 24/02/2021 07:14

Either do the washing yourself or accept your husband does it differently

Porcupineintherough · 24/02/2021 07:15

@GreenLilliesAndViolets only if you look in the mirror if you do. Which bacteria are you trying to kill? Unless you have syphilis or norovirus or something there really is no need.

You can say what the hell you like. I will continue to wash at 30 and not give a fuck. You do you.

Agree! But none of that matters because many MNers would rather go with what their mums said, back in a time when detergents were far less effective, and because they are super weird about germs... Hmm
