To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

I vary the washes, sometimes I’ll do a 60’C other times as quick 30’c is enough just to get some freshness. Don’t see an issue at all.

bonbonours · 23/02/2021 15:14

We also wash everything on cold or 30 degrees. It's absolutely fine. People have very strange ideas about cleanliness. What is it you are trying to get rid of? Do you have some kind of deadly disease??? Or just normal bodily grime, sweat etc?

User7538943 · 23/02/2021 15:21

@userxx

Is it sweaty man head that causes the pillowcases to go yellow or drool ?
It's definitely not drool, you can practically scrape the greasy sweat off DH's head, its quite revolting really. We had to recently get a new headboard because you could see a sort of yellowish stain on it, just where DH's head is, though he reckoned it was the way the light fell. It just seems to be a man problem though as it has been mentioned before on threads.
@notsorighteousthesedays interesting Grin

I’ll just get rid of him and I can wash all the bedding as I wish and also won’t have to worry about sweaty man head.

Last time I looked in Primark they didn’t have any super king bedding? I have found there to be much less choice around, and what there is, is not £20 a set.
Can’t you just get yourself some extra pillowcases so they can be washed more frequently before your OH has irrevocably ground his man sweat into the fabric.

firsttimedad79 · 23/02/2021 15:25

You mean there's more than one setting on the washing machine!?

Only joking, I can operate the machine. But I would probably do everything on a 30 degree wash as I'm on an eco drive at the moment :)

Hankunamatata · 23/02/2021 15:31

Only ever do bed linen at 60 or 90. But iv got allergies

Aneley · 23/02/2021 15:39

Underwear and towels - all but boil - so 90. Bedding - 60, as well as some cotton clothes. Everything else 30-40. And yes, I also separate religiously (underwear never with towels, bedding never with clothes, socks never with anything else... plus colour separations). My mum and gran always did the same and I was surprised to learn a lot of people don't... but I'm not doing their laundry and they're not doing mine.

Tyredofallthis1 · 23/02/2021 15:41

Stains on bedlinen - pre-soak with something like Biotex which I've picked up in Wilko before now. It works wonders.

 • or you can get pre-wash spray
 • use white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner (seriously awesome for whites and son's school shirts haven't dimmed at all)
 • dry in sunlight.

btw white vinegar instead of fabric softener for bedding and towels is a good idea because fabric softener works by coating fibres and interferes with absorbancy.

I use dishcloths and wash them at 60C. I usually am okay with bedding and towels and 40C and the rest of the kit at 30C

Pinkfreesias · 23/02/2021 15:54

Most things are done at 30°C here. Detergents are now made for use at lower temperatures. Better for the environment and for the electric bill.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/02/2021 15:55

@Tyredofallthis1 Do you put vinegar in the fabric conditioner section of your washing machine drawer, or do you use it as a pre-wash?

I quite often presoak with a solution of white vinegar to remove underarm stains but I haven't tried using it at the fabric conditioner stage.

Tyredofallthis1 · 23/02/2021 15:57

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow I just bung a glug in the fabric conditioner drawer.

I'm a complete slattern, but the whites are always pristine and bright. I credit Ariel, white vinegar and luck.

Thomasina79 · 23/02/2021 16:16

I like bedding to be washed at least on 40 and since the pandemic I have added an anti bacterial powder, not sure if it is necessary, also t towels.

The rest goes in at 30. Some of my personal clothes I do on cold.

One of the things I love about summer is the smell of sheets dried in the sun. My bedding is all white cotton so 40 helps them to stay white.

Nonamesavail · 23/02/2021 16:19

I have some spare super king bed linen from asda under 20quid.

LakieLady · 23/02/2021 16:30

@MakeMineALarge1

I feel very inadequate. I wash everything at 30 I seperate on colour only. I don't do different items in different temperature. I rarely iron. I
Me too.

And this will probably put me squarely in the minging club, but most stuff gets done on a 15 minute quick wash, as well.

It all comes out looking fine by my (possibly low) standards.

GrolliffetheDragon · 23/02/2021 16:39

Clothes go in on a cold wash, and usually a quick wash as well. Anything properly exercised in goes in on a 30 or 40, cat bedding and towels 60, tea towels, dish cloths, bath mats go in on 60 or 95 depending on my mood.

Bedding I'd probably do on a 30 and maybe a hotter wash once or twice a year per set.

Nothing smells, everything comes out clean.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 16:43

So @BasinHaircut if it all comes out clean will you apologise to Mr Dirty Head and renounce your energy wasting ways?

Also can he not just wash his head more regularly so you don't have to boil the entire bed linen?

BasinHaircut · 23/02/2021 16:59

I will be examining the pillowcases properly shortly Grin

@SleepingStandingUp I’m not going to lie, even though they look fine, the wash he put it on is not adequate for the bedding (not just temp but length) in my opinion.

I will concede that we could wash it on a cooler wash, but if so it needs to be a longer one.

I will probably continue to do them on 60 though if I’m honest, I just won’t comment if he does differently.

....i wash most stuff on 30. Not killed anyone yet

UnsolicitedDickPic · 23/02/2021 20:54

This is fascinating! I knew the environmental implications of a low temp wash and most of my stuff is washed on 30/40 degrees, but I was always taught that bedding was done on at least 60 degrees and I've always washed accordingly. Thank you Mumsnet, I have learned something tonight.Grin

AllFrightOnTheNight · 23/02/2021 21:03

30 is fine. It will be clean.

Desmondo2016 · 23/02/2021 21:04

I'm not sure what you think would happen even if you didn't wash it at all!

Hangingover · 23/02/2021 21:06

Literally everything here is washed at 30.

Okbussitout · 23/02/2021 21:09

Ok so, how grubby is your husband's head?
Why chuck out a spare set leaving only one set?
