To laugh at the “free jute shopper” ad on MN?

To me it basically reads:

“Free hessian sack when you sign up to MN’s overpaid subscription service!”

Who would actually pay for premium on this outdated forum?

This forum platform is at least a decade out of date if not more. To ask people to pay for this is incredibly cheeky IMO. There is zero value unless am missing something ?

I hear the subscription is 50 UK pounds a month! For that I would want more than a hessian tote.

Hope this post does not get banned!

Is anyone actually signed up & do you feel you got value?

I just can’t see why anybody would pay money for this forum or be tempted to sign up by being offered a hessian sack worth 6 quid

But perhaps am cynical & there is some amazing value am not seeing here?

I also think it's a bit silly. And the platform is incredibly outdated. I don't know why nothing has been updated at all!

Not for the amount it crashes, goes down, gets attacked etc, data breaches. I imagine they still treat it like the little cottage business it started off as, many years ago, and have been too tight to invest properly in the IT.

I’m not saying I don’t enjoy MN at all or I wouldn’t spend so much time on it. I just think on this level it’s a bit of a cheep asking people to pay.

I like how old-school the forum is. I don't need profile pictures or tickers. It's easy to read on mobile and reminds me of the early days of the web when online discussion was fairly anonymous.
Me too. The subscription is optional, MN is optional. If you don't like it don't use it 🤷‍♀️

I don’t pay for it personally, but I don’t really give too much thought to those that do. It’s their choice, their reasons for doing so. I understand MN need to make revenue and that’s one of the ways they do it.

But nobody is forced to sign up, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Well am certainly glad paying for it is optional.

Does anyone have the jute shopping bag ? Can you confirm what is looks like? Is the MN logo on it or something?

We can only hope the money from the subscription fees will one day fund an Edit post option

A huge part of this websites success is due to the fact that people have to "own the shit they post" to borrow cute a little American phrase.

Post-editing would have muppets posting cutesy stuff to get people to agree, then post editing it to say cack.

Winds up the wind up merchants, but hey ho.

It is possible to be old-school in style but have a decent backend platform. The entire system was bodged and mackled from the original, professionals weren't brought in to sort it out and now it is a mess of patches. It's incredibly insecure and needs to be started from scratch but that costs money and that wont happen

No it's not because EVERYONE at a restaurant is paying. It's more akin to going to bog standard greasy spoon and them offering you a VIP service for an extra tenner. But all the VIP service gives you is a few more beans on your breakfast and a few less grease stains on your table, and someone shouting over the velvet rope 'it's not worth it'

I haven’t paid but is it so strange that ppl may want to if they have found this site helpful and want to make sure it keeps going. MN are not asking you to pay to use it. No different to crowdfunding etc....
