To laugh at the “free jute shopper” ad on MN?

To me it basically reads:

“Free hessian sack when you sign up to MN’s overpaid subscription service!”

Who would actually pay for premium on this outdated forum?

This forum platform is at least a decade out of date if not more. To ask people to pay for this is incredibly cheeky IMO. There is zero value unless am missing something ?

I hear the subscription is 50 UK pounds a month! For that I would want more than a hessian tote.

Hope this post does not get banned!

I subscribe - I signed up before the free Jute bag, at a time when certain groups were targeting companies that advertise on MN, trying to force them to stop working with MN, and a few quid a month felt a small price to pay to support a website that provides me with a welcome distraction most days. You don't get the ads all over the place, and I think there are a few additional features (like being able to just see the OP's posts).

Its optional, and I would imagine most of the people that subscribe are like me, doing it to support a website I enjoy, rather than because I actually want 'a few more beans on my breakfast'.

I don't subscribe and there are no adverts all over the app and I can also filter to only see the OP's posts. I'm not seeing the benefits of subscribing.

Anothermuddywalk · 22/02/2021 11:06

@ifitpleasesandsparkles - can you see all posts from any poster in a thread? I can for example filter to just see what you've posted on this thread.
But as I said, it wasn't really about the added benefits for me, but about supporting a website that was both being attacked, and was struggling during the pandemic due to companies' reduced advertising budgets. Others are free not to do this, as they can continue to use the website as they always have.

Doesn't seem worth the £50. I'm sure they could make it worth the money. But at the moment, no.

CommanderBurnham · 22/02/2021 11:14

I pay, and it's because over the years MN has been a real godsend. Lots of practical advice and recommendations. The contentious threads always end up giving a balanced argument and the window into other people's lives has made me understand others and their day to day issues a lot more.

I've wasted £50 on a lot worse.

gutful · 22/02/2021 11:26

Ok so the 50 dollars is to show “support” to MN basically ( as an ad blocker could do the same if you don’t want to see ads)

The offering is “if you like us give us 50 quid to show your support”

the jute bag is a recent addition

The people who paid 50 bucks originally deserve the jute tote too - as they must be the hardcore fans

Agree that the forum could still have its minimalist style while still having a superior platform backend.

I too hate tickers, a little avatar/profile pic might be nice though & help create a more community feel

Or maybe people prefer to not notice who posts what?

@PurpleHoodie

A huge part of this websites success is due to the fact that people have to "own the shit they post" to borrow cute a little American phrase.

Post-editing would have muppets posting cutesy stuff to get people to agree, then post editing it to say cack.

Winds up the wind up merchants, but hey ho.

You could have it so that if someone post edits their post it tells you they have, and how many times.
AmberRoseGold · 22/02/2021 11:33

I paid for similar reasons. I like simple sites but more, I have found amazing help here. I don’t often post but refer to all sorts of topics to find out about dog training/Christmas bargains/nice clothes/good sofas. When my children were smaller and I was isolated it was a total life line. I appreciated the Feminist Chat page and the eye opening postings on sex based rights there so it felt like I should pay with money as I don’t add much content. Happy to do so. Don’t really need extra features- I really miss being able to see all thread posts on one page which stopped years but that is the only extra functionality I would want. And I don’t like the smell of jute bags.

gutful · 22/02/2021 11:33

It just sounds like the people who have come forward to say they are premium members have not done it for any actual premium service - just because they like MN which is fair enough if you feel happy with your purchase!

Or they paid, regret it, and are now justifying it to themselves.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/02/2021 11:40

The £50 is entirely optional, people know that right?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 22/02/2021 12:01

If you regret it why would you admit to paying for it?

gutful · 22/02/2021 12:10

Can someone please post a pic of the jute tote ?

Why do you care so much? Intrigued !

I subscribe, if they send me a jute bag and it has 'mumsnet' written on it I'll happily send it to you. (Second rule of Mumsnet is not to walk around with a jute bag saying you use mumsnet).
PurpleHoodie · 22/02/2021 17:33

CloudPop

Mmm hmm. What you said.

Circle

Funny. I like it.

Might actually subscribe; get one and tie my MN scarf to the handle.

Yes. I DO actually own a MN scarf.

gutful · 23/02/2021 07:32

@CircleofWillis imagine waiting with baited breath, never knowing if the jute tote may or may not ever arrive...

Seriously though that’s very kind to say - really just want to see what it actually looks like & if the tote is enough to get more people over the line

I subscribe.

I use the mobile site, and love not having adverts. I like the "no frills" feel of Mumsnet, and to be honest I'm happy to pay a fiver a month just to read AIBU.

And I don't want a jute bag either. @AmberRoseGold is right. They flipping stink.

Donatella · 23/02/2021 07:57

I subscribe, signed up as soon as they launched it. I was fed up of ads all over the place, interrupting threads, making it slow to load. Now I don't have any ads and it is a much better experience (a couple of times there have been glitches and I've had ads for a couple of days and I really notice the difference). Couldn't give a crap about the jute shopper or any of the other premium 'extras', just don't give me ads. I figure that the site needs revenue from somewhere, and if I am being given the option to replace the money they would otherwise be getting from advertisers to make my life a bit more pleasant, then I will take it.

You do realise you can get ad blocker for free?
TotorosFurryBehind · 23/02/2021 11:35

I would happily subscribe to MN paid if the local forums were better. I think they have a huge user base and have missed a trick in facilitating something like Mush that enables lonely local mums to meet.

MechantGourmet · 23/02/2021 11:37

You can't wash jute bags either.

Donatella · 23/02/2021 16:37

And then how are sites supposed to generate revenue? It can't be provided for free, there has to be some income somewhere. Using an ad blocker to take that content without the site being compensated in that way feels like cheating, if not stealing. If everyone used an ad blocker MN would cease to exist

To be honest I would never have blocked the ads if they were decent ads. So many of them are dodgy, trashy and spammy though. Adverts for good brands which I trust would be fine.
