To laugh at the “free jute shopper” ad on MN?

To me it basically reads:

“Free hessian sack when you sign up to MN’s overpaid subscription service!”

Who would actually pay for premium on this outdated forum?

This forum platform is at least a decade out of date if not more. To ask people to pay for this is incredibly cheeky IMO. There is zero value unless am missing something ?

I hear the subscription is 50 UK pounds a month! For that I would want more than a hessian tote.

The problem with the ads is the site platform & adserver is so outdated that no big advertisers want to come onboard.

Mumsnet could have high quality ads from bigger advertisers with more spend if they just improved the platform.

They will have an old adserver with poor ad reporting functionality - advertisers have moved past paying for shit display ads that don’t even support html5 - the ads are still Gifs & jpegs. This is early 2000s tech

Also Mumsnet seem to refuse to cap their ads

Those in stream video ads were being delivered by flooding you with ads.

Better user experience is to cap a video at 1-2 per user per session

They are shooting themselves in the foot by not investing in basic technology

I subscribe - I signed up before the free Jute bag, at a time when certain groups were targeting companies that advertise on MN, trying to force them to stop working with MN, and a few quid a month felt a small price to pay to support a website that provides me with a welcome distraction most days. You don't get the ads all over the place, and I think there are a few additional features (like being able to just see the OP's posts). Its optional, and I would imagine most of the people that subscribe are like me, doing it to support a website I enjoy, rather than because I actually want 'a few more beans on my breakfast'.

I don’t even see the adverts anymore. Just scroll straight past them. I’m on maternity leave at the moment so can’t afford £50 for a site I can use for free but I love MN and spend way too much time here. In the future, I may subscribe to give support but I can’t at the minute. Couldn’t care less about a free bag though.

I agree with a PP, MN has opened my eyes to sex-based rights and other platforms and ‘charities’ wanting to shush us makes me want to support MN even more! I can’t post my views on this on my social media so MN is my place to express my opinion anonymously. I’m grateful for that. I don’t want an avatar or a profile picture of any sorts. Unless we all had pictures of random animals, it would become less anonymous and that’s not what I want.

I also agree that I don’t want an edit button. Sure, correcting a typo would be lovely but people would use it to change what they wrote completely and I don’t want that. I can usually work out what a typo was meant to be so it doesn’t really matter.

I agree that the platform needs serious work. It’s really clunky and out of date, and missing most of the features that other platforms have as standard (such as nested replies, up and down voting etc). I wouldn’t pay for it for any reason, but especially not when it’s such a poor user experience.
