Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Ideally both.
However, I would rent a holiday let without a dishwasher.
If it was small and and we were only there a few days, no washing machine would be fine.

If holidaying in a hotel for a couple weeks you pack accordingly for no washing machine but a holiday let is different.

Marmite27 · 22/02/2021 06:39

100% a dishwasher.

I pack enough clothes for a week and will bring them home to wash or find a laundrette in an absolute emergency.

Also if there’s no drier a washer is useless as in wet weather how do you get the clothes dry.

I don’t wash up at home (have a dishwasher) so wouldn’t book somewhere with one on holiday!

Most holiday let’s only provide a limited amount of crockery so you end up having to wash dishes anyway or constantly put the dishwasher on. I would only book a place with both appliances normally, but if I had to pick one it would be a washing machine as we could bring free clothes then.

Hellzbellz25 · 22/02/2021 06:53

100% washing machine for me

Covidcorvid · 22/02/2021 06:54

People might hang wet washing around in the house if you have a washing machine and you may end up with a mould issue.?

I’ve never used a washing machine in a holiday cottage even when there’s been one. Dishwasher I’d use every day.

AgentProvocateur · 22/02/2021 06:55

I wouldn’t go if it didn’t have both. And a dryer in this country. I wouldnt go and stay in a holiday house with fewer facilities than my own home.

WorriedMillie · 22/02/2021 06:57

Dishwasher, especially if driving to a destination, as we always take more clothes than needed
I hate washing up at the best of times Grin

SisterWendyBuckett · 22/02/2021 07:01

You really need both.

You can get a reasonably sized dishwasher that sits on the surface top.

Get a washing machine too and provide a Lakeland style heated airer so clothes/towels etc can be easily and quickly dried. You don't want condensation from damp items hanging around.

Dishwasher and leave info about the nearest laundrette/service wash. Doing the dishes on holiday feels like a downgrade.

Emeraldrabbittail · 22/02/2021 07:03

I work with holiday lets. Washing machines are important. We get alsorts through the doors, not everyone is staying only a week or even two. We have had people stay a month or more. We also get workers. Not everyone carries alot of luggage. Campers/back packers for example who treat themselves for a few days of comfort and a chance to refresh all there clothes. You get bed wetters and people throwing up. Who do want to clean up after themselves alittle. The washing machines get regular use.

Mylittlesandwich · 22/02/2021 07:04

We went to a caravan last year that had a washing machine and it was brilliant. Never had one before but DS was 10 months and it was so handy!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/02/2021 07:04

Both and a tumble dryer.

Beach holidays in this country with kids and you need to wash stuff that’s Sandy and won’t wait til you get home. I won’t stay anywhere that doesn’t have one and a dishwasher.

Avaganda · 22/02/2021 07:07

Dishwasher because I'd need to use that everyday. I always pack enough clothes for the week when we go away and save it to wash when we get home. No way do I want to spend my week washing up by hand!

Uiseag · 22/02/2021 07:09

I've rarely used washing machines in self catering accommodation but I wouldn't book somewhere without a dishwasher. I don't have a dishwasher at home but really appreciate one on holiday.

Imapotato · 22/02/2021 07:10

I would go on a UK holiday for more than a week and you can easily bring enough clothes to not have to do washing in that time. So. I need for a washing machine.

A dishwasher would be great to have though.

Imapotato · 22/02/2021 07:10

*no need for a washing machine.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 22/02/2021 07:10

With young ones, a washing machine. We may have used that on the rare occasion. Wouldn’t need a dishwasher as only have breakfast in if self catering as cooking and washing up isn’t part of a holiday for me.

redcandlelight · 22/02/2021 07:11

if you offer a washing machine you also need to consider space to dry clothing.

peak2021 · 22/02/2021 07:11

I am surprised so many of you prefer a dishwasher. Unexpected.

jellybe · 22/02/2021 07:12

Dishwasher dirty clothes can wait until I get home

3totheright4totheleft · 22/02/2021 07:14

Washing machine. I could live without both for a week though. It was useful the year DD was sick all over the sheets first night in, but otherwise in a holiday let I'd much rather have a decent amount of the right crockery and enough space to put my own groceries, which isn't always the case. And no ancient condiments....
Seriously though some of these comments! The person who said they would rather shit in their hands than wash a wine glass...I mean, come on.

flowerinavase · 22/02/2021 07:14

Dishwasher!

As some kind of workaround, as you're near bye could you offer some kind of paid-for laundry service? That way in an emergency people wouldn't be stuck without.

SuperbGorgonzola · 22/02/2021 07:14

Washing machine.

If i'm considering somewhere to take the children, a washing machine would be a non negotiable.

Roselilly36 · 22/02/2021 07:19

I love both, but given the choice in a holiday cottage, definitely a washing machine, for my family it’s an absolute must, dishwasher is nice but not essential for most families for a week or two.

Adancewithdragons · 22/02/2021 07:19

We have small children and it wouldn’t occur to me not to take enough clothes for a full holiday.

It would however annoy me not to have a dishwasher, I don’t want more work on my holiday. It would put me off not having a dishwasher, I don’t like to eat out all the time and prefer to cook from scratch. A well kitted out kitchen with a dishwasher is a non negotiable in my eyes.

I wouldn’t use the washing unless it was an emergency as I don’t like the idea if using the same one as other people.
