Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Bunk room suggests children. Children often mean washing. Hand washing my child's travel sick covered clothes in a little bathroom sink is not my idea of holiday fun.
Washing machine with ordinary powder (and a scoop) please.

@VeniVidiWeeWee

Don't people take enough clothes on holiday to see them through?

It's about choice, surely?

Most people can take enough clothes to last the week, but if washing facilities are available then they do not have to.

It's a game changer in terms of packing space, particularly for larger families.

MustDust · 21/02/2021 23:51

An apartment with a washing machine would always make me choose it over another. I perhaps have a slight thing about cleaning clothes but it does mean I can travel lighter. Ish!

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2021 23:52

Dishwasher.

But I would want both. Grin

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 21/02/2021 23:52

And typically on holiday I’d eat out once or twice, couldn’t afford to eat out every night with children

ClarkeGriffin · 21/02/2021 23:52

Dishwasher. Who the hell doesn't take enough clothes for their holiday? And would prefer to wash dishes? No thanks, dishwasher definitely.

AdaColeman · 21/02/2021 23:53

People on holiday will likely have brought a few changes of clothes with them, making a washing machine non essential. You've also got the problems of what do they do with their wet washing if the weather is bad, would you put a dryer rack over a bath for instance.
On the other hand....
Holiday makers will be eating everyday of course, so a dishwasher much more useful!

KihoBebiluPute · 21/02/2021 23:54

I will never again rent a holiday home with no dishwasher. Did it once. I did far too much washing up that holiday. Never again.

Washing machine meh. would have been vital when DC under 5yo but these days there's no problem packing enough clothes because older children are a lot less messy and chaotic. So to some extent that depends on your target market. Would you have any ability to offer that guests could do a batch in your machine in the main house in an emergency?

OOAOML · 21/02/2021 23:55

Washing machine - great for kids, and lighter packing, plus not having to wash it all as soon as we get home.

We tend to have easy meals on holiday so not loads of dishes.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 21/02/2021 23:55

Dishwasher.
The one and only time I've needed a washing machine in 16 years of being a parent I went to the laundrette.

StanfordPines · 21/02/2021 23:55

I can wash dishes by hand. Washing clothes by hand is an arse. Yes you plan to take enough clothes with you but things get spilled and children get ill.

disneydreaming · 21/02/2021 23:56

Definitely a dishwasher!
I usually overpack for us all anyway so often have too many clothes.
I wouldn't be spending my holiday doing washing.
I would much rather not spend it doing dishes either so a dishwasher is a must Grin

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 21/02/2021 23:56

In the absence of any way of drying off bath towels, wet clothes of anything you might have to unexpectedly wash, sink or otherwise (period starting, stomach upset, kids being sick, spilled ice cream/drink), I'd say washer dryer. Normally a bit shit, but for 3-4 items, it would be very handy.

FangsForTheMemory · 21/02/2021 23:56

I’d go for dishwasher. At a push, you can find a laundrette. Who’s going to be doing the washing up if there’s no dishwasher?

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2021 23:56

I always book holiday lets in the UK with a washing machine and dishwasher.

I take plenty of clothes on holiday, might do a small couple of loads (no effort at all-not sure what the issue is, turn machine on-go out) and then the day before we leave I wash everything and bring it back home clean. No bags of laundry to sort when I get home.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2021 23:57

If you live somewhere people are going to stay for two weeks with many cheap eateries around, washing machine. Mini break land with expensive food in restaurants, dish washer.

But really never a washing machine without a dryer.

Merryoldgoat · 21/02/2021 23:58

To be honest as a family with 2 small children I’d not rent anywhere without both.

Young kids mean the washing machine wins for me but it’s marginal.

EachBleachBlairTrump · 21/02/2021 23:59

Definitely dishwasher, I've never done laundry on holiday! We do tend to eat out but rarely for breakfast, and there will be the odd lunch, cups and glasses etc, so much easier to put them in the dishwasher and head out for the day.

CherryRoulade · 21/02/2021 23:59

Washing machine

BashfulClam · 21/02/2021 23:59

Dishwasher, I detest washing dishes so don’t want to be doing that on holiday!

Choppingandchanging · 22/02/2021 00:00

Definitely a dishwasher. Just take the clothes home to wash. Which is something you can't do with the pots obviously...

MagdasMadHouse · 22/02/2021 00:01

Dishwasher. I mean, personally I don't have a dishwasher so wouldn't care that much, but I think generally people bring enough clothes and if there is a reason they have to wash anything can do a quick hand wash or find a laundromat. Whereas not having a dishwasher when your used to one will stop a lot of people from booking from the get go

ChampionOfTheSun · 22/02/2021 00:04

Dishwasher definitely, we went on a week away back in October and my one niggle was having to wash up. We have a dishwasher at home so it didn't feel like much of a break for us having to wash up. I did cook most days actually, I enjoy cooking and I enjoy having time to cook. I hate washing up though and so does DH! I'm happy to take my washing home with me.

DustyMaiden · 22/02/2021 00:07

Dishwasher

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 00:07

Even with enough clothes it's so nice to be able to wash beach towels and bathing costumes ready for the next day and deal with any spillages etc

But if it has to be one or the other I guess a dishwasher would be more of a luxury. People say self catering holidays are just 'washing up with a different view' sometimes!
