Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Dishwasher without a doubt and I have a baby. Ok in an ideal world there would be both but if I’m driving to a holiday let I’m pretty much going to bring all the clothes my baby owns in the event of nappy explosions etc and adults don’t need many clothes.

IF however people stay here longer than a week/fortnight I would say washing machine. Or at least let them know where the nearest laundrette is, hopefully nearby??

Definitely a washing machine! Especially when you have children. Means you can wear your favourite things more often. Also for a beach holiday you can wash towels and swimwear often.

BirdHedge · 25/02/2021 17:00

Dishwasher. Always take enough clothes to wash when back. I do not want to wash up on holiday! If your husband really cares, you can offer to use tour machine as an extra £10.

I'm astounded by how many people wash clothes. I see why so many people don't want to self cater if they see it as an extension of the chores at home.
Me, I want a holiday so don't want to wash dishes. I don't mind cooking some simple meals combined with eating out, but I'm not bloody washing clothes.

Eddielzzard · 25/02/2021 18:40

YANBU got to be dishwasher!!

I just like getting away. Washing a couple of loads of washing takes no enjoyment from my holiday at all

Perhaps depends on location and likely activities and who you are marketing at. Younger kids, outdoor activities, day trips, likely to have some wet/ cold weather etc. I'd rather have a washing machine.
Lazing about on a beach in fine weather and going to rental for meals, a dishwasher would be better.

Dee1975 · 25/02/2021 21:19

Dishwasher. I’m not washing clothes when I’m in holiday. I bring enough for the stay. Also, as I am on holiday I don’t want to be washing dishes either. So defo a dishwasher.

All Day Long Every Day 24/7/365 DISHWASHER
There was near anarchy here a few years ago when ours irretrievably broke down and we hadn’t the immediate funds to replace it. I loathe the constant pile-ups of dishes atm as we are all home/more cooking etc. laundry can be sorted more easily than the internal nagging mess of left dirty dishes or the nuisance of feeling like they have to be done after every meal.

McSleepy · 25/02/2021 22:49

Dishwasher essential, washing machine a bonus for me. If there is a washing machine I usually use it but it wouldn’t put me off booking if there wasn’t one. I put a dishwasher wash on every day on holiday - especially as there usually seems to be less of everything than we have at home and I’d have to wash up 2 times a day otherwise and I do not go on holiday to do more chores than I would do at home!

shiningstar2 · 25/02/2021 23:02

Definitely dishwasher. Nothing worse when trying to get our for the day to have breakfast to wash up before you get out. Who wants to just get out and come back to it! We eat out quite a lot on holiday, but not always every night. We might have takeaway or barbeque. Great if everything can be pushed in dishwasher ...not great to face washing up before bed or getting out next morning. Clearing up meals must be done. Washing can wait until I get home.

Also, from the renter's pov a dishwasher is best. Lots of places want holiday makers away by 10.00 at the latest so the place can be prepared for next guests. It is so much easier to leave the place as you find it with a dishwasher. I put it on straight after early breakfast while we whizz around getting everything else tidy, beds stripped ext. With six of us I can imagine the panic if possible last takeaway and breakfast needed washed up manually whilst last packing, dog walking, cleaning was going on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/02/2021 23:03

Dishwasher. I filter out properties with no dw.

alwaysraining123 · 25/02/2021 23:06

We wouldn’t go on holiday without a washing machine but we have young kids.

Craftycorvid · 25/02/2021 23:08

Washing machine every single time. We stayed in a lovely place in the brief between lockdowns phase last year and it really got awkward not to be able to wash anything, especially hiking gear. We’d never bother with a dish washer (there was one) as two adults don’t make for much holiday washing up, and the oven was large enough for a roast dinner for six....in a let only big enough for two.

mellicauli · 25/02/2021 23:08

You could put in a dishwasher and offer a washing service (for a fee)

LadyGAgain · 25/02/2021 23:10

I wouldn't consider it to be a holiday without both.

MissDollyMix · 25/02/2021 23:15

Ideally both but, even with young children, I wouldn’t consider a let without a dishwasher. The laundry can wait until I get home.

2bazookas · 25/02/2021 23:21

washing machine.

Multicover · 25/02/2021 23:24

I’m astounded by how many people stash 30 pairs of dirty knickers in a bag for a week if you’re a family of five Wink
Washing machine every time. The kids do the washing up Wink

cheercaptain · 25/02/2021 23:32

Washing machine

MollyBloomYes · 25/02/2021 23:40

Hmmmm tricky. Initially I would have gone with washing machine only because I immediately had visions of youngest DC going for a walk and falling over in something unspeakable. But I suppose it entirely depends on the location and the type of activities where getting messy might be likely.

Having read a few posts I completely agree that a dishwasher would be amazing for a holiday let. I HATE washing up, hate that my kitchen has no way of fitting a proper dishwasher in and am now saving up for a tabletop dishwasher because even that will lighten the load enough to make it worth it! Maybe that could be a solution and a way of having both, depending on how much counter space you have in the kitchen? I'm pretty sure my mum would want a washing machine in a self catering holiday let type place so she wouldn't have loads of washing to do when she got home and I think a lot of her friends would be the same. Agree with others about drying space as well though-would there be room for an airer or a washing line outside?

I think overall though I'm leaning towards dishwasher.

Alternatively if it's an annexe could you supply nearest laundrette details or even an 'emergency wash' service using your machine for small children emergencies?

SunscreenCentral · 25/02/2021 23:41

The kids do washing up? Another reason to want a dishwasher when booking!!! (I’m sure @Multicover kids are great washer uppers but I’d not want to bet everyone’s are 🤢

WaltzForDebbie · 26/02/2021 00:03

Dishwasher 100%. Our daughter has severe allergies so we rarely eat out. It would be s real bind to have to do the dishes on holiday.

floss1 · 26/02/2021 00:35

Dishwasher!!!!
I absolutely hate washing up - especially on holiday.
I don’t want to faff about with clothes washing on holiday either! Good luck

FaceyRomford · 26/02/2021 01:31

If it has to be one or the other, washing machine. You can always eat out and let someone else do the dishes. But, TBH, I would look at a holiday let without both.
