Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Dishwasher, because you can bring enough clothes not to need to do a wash. But a better compromise would be to find a way to have both. Could you, for instance, attach a lean-to or put up a small shed in which you could put a washing machine and maybe a tumble dryer? Do you have a utility room that you could put a washing machine in and give them access? In the final analysis, could you offer the use of yours by prior arrangement?

Never done a load of washing away

Dishwasher is used everytime. Even if your just making breakfast it uses pans , plates, cups etc. I don't wash up at home and don't want to do it away!

Bedsheets4knickers · 22/02/2021 01:21

Washing machine

Tankflybosswalkjam · 22/02/2021 01:22

Look at it this way: Centerparcs, overpriced robdogs that they are, rarely miss a trick. And every house they have, has a dishwasher, and there isn’t a single washing machine to be had for miles.

That tells you that a) it must be better for Centerparcs and b) if it was necessary in order for it to make Centerparcs successful they would have done it.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/02/2021 01:22

Is there a laundrette in your area? If so they could do emergency wash there. I’d definitely say dishwasher but I do like a washing machine as well.

Nith · 22/02/2021 01:24

Seems like more hassle than it's worth (loading, adding products to it, unloading, washing things by hand that don't fit/aren't suitable, rewashing things that didn't get clean etc); what is so awful about washing up in a bowl?!

The vast majority of stuff does fit, and I never rewash stuff that didn't get clean. The need rarely arises, and if it does I just leave whatever it was in the machine for the next load. Adding products involves minimal time.

We had a long period without a dishwasher recently when the old one gave up the ghost and we decided to wait till the kitchen was redone before replacing it. Washing up by hand just never seemed to end, particularly when the whole family was around - I hate to think what i would have been like to be stuck with that in lockdown. And there were some things like tea stains which need so much effort to shift. When we finally had a dishwasher again, it was - and is - bliss.

Dishwasher for me, every time!

CrikeyPeg · 22/02/2021 01:44

@FinallyFluid

I wouldn't even consider it, if it didn't have both.
Same.
IdblowJonSnow · 22/02/2021 01:52

Dishwasher for me definitely.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 22/02/2021 01:59

Dishwasher.

2 seaside hols, same location, different flats - 1st year the flat and both, 2nd year neither. It was the dishwasher I missed hugely. You can bring dirty washing home but dirty dishes spoil a good meal.

ElCaMum · 22/02/2021 02:05

As you’re asking for a one or other, it would be dishwasher.
But if there is a way to squeeze in a washing machine somewhere it would definitely make your accommodation more appealing.

Five67Eight · 22/02/2021 02:54

Sorry OP I’d look for somewhere that had both. Both are a bare minimum.

If someone put a gun to my head, I’d say I’d prefer a dishwasher - potentially three loads of dishes a day by hand? Come on, no way.

But really - I’d just choose somewhere that had both. Why would I want to be more inconvenienced on holiday than at home?

OhCaptain · 22/02/2021 03:01

A dishwasher 100%.

I don’t wash clothes on holidays but I’d rather shit in my hands and clap than have to wash up breakfast dishes and wine glasses etc every evening.

MrWendel · 22/02/2021 03:10

I would ideally want both but if only one, it has to be a washing machine.

So many reasons:

Washing muddy/dirty/wet clothes after being out;
Washing sheets in case of children's bed wetting or period staining;
Washing towels etc.

SEE123 · 22/02/2021 03:10

Dishwasher!

Can always bring extra clothes (as you would if you were going to a hotel). No one wants to argue about washing dirty dishes every night*

*which we didn't, because stupid me would do it x3 per day to avoid the drama.

nameisnotimportant · 22/02/2021 03:12

Dishwasher a million times over ! I would never do my washing while on holiday but having to do the dishes every day would not be a break

PutItInNeutral · 22/02/2021 03:18

I’d do a washing machine, and a countertop dishwasher.

camelfinger · 22/02/2021 03:22

I generally opt for places with both. It depends on the target market. If it was just me and DH then I’d probably say dishwasher, although we’d probably eat out for all except breakfast anyway.
With the kids, 100% a washing machine. I find “laundry” v easy to do in a holiday property, often without having to take things up and down stairs, with empty drawers to put things in. And it’s quicker to pack and unpack if you haven’t taken your entire wardrobe with you. We tend to take one outfit to wear, one for washing and one spare (extra spares for kids). Having less stuff makes it easier generally.
We tend to run the dishwasher half empty in holiday properties as it takes longer to fill up than when at home, or we end up fishing things out to hand wash individually.

sashh · 22/02/2021 03:23

Dishwasher - you use that every day.

But I would have contact information for a service wash and maybe even a folding washing machine - the type you can have in a caravan.

Could you do a washer and a table top dishwasher?

MountainPeakGeek · 22/02/2021 03:29

@LondonStone

Dishwasher. 100%

People might personally want/need a washing machine when they stay but it has no effect on the next guest.

Turning up to dirty/badly washed mugs or plates with food still stuck to bottom will leave a horrible impression on guests. Trust me, a lot of people do not wash dishes well, especially in holiday homes. I’ve often had to rewash forks with food still stuck in them and it’s grim.

Yuck! That is grim. I've run a B&B (self contained cabin in the Rockies) and that should never happen. That's something that any good host (or the cleaner that they employ) should always check for between guests...
Chunkymenrock · 22/02/2021 03:32

Dishwasher and you offering a laundry service, if feasible.

MountainPeakGeek · 22/02/2021 03:40

When I stay somewhere for less than a week, I'd rather have the dishwasher. Over a week and I'd FAR prefer a washing machine.

What's the average length of stay for your guests? At our place it was quite unusual for us to get bookings for more than a couple of days as we're mid-way between two major "road trip" destinations, so we were more of a stopping off point, rather than the final destination.

Do people tend to stay in your holiday let for their whole break or just a few days?

Also, as others have asked, is there any convenient launderette?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/02/2021 03:41

If your target group is families then a washing machine is preferable.

DS2 was not reliably dry at night until he was 6. We always took a waterproof sheet and spare bedding on holiday with us and thankfully only ended up having to change bedding a few times but I wouldn't have rented anywhere without a washing machine.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 22/02/2021 03:52

Washing machine, especially as it's for a family.
A bed-wetting child needs sheets washed every morning, and a stash of washable nappies only lasts 2-3 days. Add some car-sick kids' puke and some filthy clothes they will cry if can't wear again...

Dishwasher great but if you have plenty of mugs and bowls and plates they don't need to wash up more than once a day. If you're paranoid about missed crud, could have two crates of crockery and swap them over between tenants so can check at your leisure.

Raindancer411 · 22/02/2021 04:01

Dishwasher. I can honestly say I have never washed clothes on holiday. Who has time for that?!! We take all the clothes we need for the week and I just do that when home.
