Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Dishwasher! Who the hell does washing on holiday??
Me! I hate taking dirty clothes home.

RedcurrantPuff · 22/02/2021 00:41

Washing dishes is a chore you have to do anyway so a dishwasher lessens the impact.

Whereas even with a washing machine doing laundry is still a chore but best farmed out to someone else/back at home. Who wants to be doing bloody laundry on holiday. Fuck that shit!

Twillow · 22/02/2021 00:42

Dishwasher. Do not desire to do laundry on holiday.

AlwaysLatte · 22/02/2021 00:42

Who the hell does lots of messy cooking in a holiday let?
I like self catering so that we can choose between eating out or in but yes, we often cook elaborate meals at least a few times.

LondonStone · 22/02/2021 00:42

@Sparklingbrook

I have never been to a holiday let that had grubby cutlery/plates etc. Would the cleaners not check on things like that?
You must be lucky! I don’t think I’ve been to a holiday let that DIDN’T have something dirty. Saying that, we often stay in larger houses with all my family together so I don’t think cleaners are checking 20 plates, 20 bowls, 20 mugs, 60 items of cutlery, 40 glasses etc etc she’d be there forever!
HarrietSchulenberg · 22/02/2021 00:42

Washing machine. We don't own 7 days worth of clothes, at least not anything I'd want to wear outside so if there wasn't one I'd have to look for a launderette so would be pissed off.
I don't have a dishwasher at home so probably wouldn't use one on holiday. Certainly wouldn't expect there to be one in a holiday let.

UmmH · 22/02/2021 00:44

Dishwasher will make it easier for you, the owner. The turn around time between visitors will be smoother if you know the dishes have been hygienically washed. Otherwise you have to rely on the visitors to do it properly, or waste time doing it yourself.

ElephantsNest · 22/02/2021 00:44

Oh goodness, if it’s a country place near muddy walks, a washing machine wins every time. Outside of COVID we would normally eat out or bring a takeaway back, which doesn’t create loads of dirty washing up. If it’s a city pad I’d go for a dishwasher.

Eviethyme · 22/02/2021 00:46

I have never done laundry whilst on holiday :S like when I'm abroad I just put all dirty clothes in a bag and bring them home... Have I been doing this wrong?

Do people who stay in hotels ask them to wash there clothes??

MrsDoctorDear · 22/02/2021 00:47

Washing machine. Only two of us and one year abroad we washed everything at the end of our holiday.
It was an absolute revelation to get home and put all our clean clothes away when we unpacked, instead of filling up the washing basket.

Never had a dishwasher, never needed one.

Ask yourself how many people need a washing machine at home compared to a dishwasher?

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 00:49

I must have been @LondonStone. But there's only 4 of us and we don't really cook anything but breakfast on holiday, and there's always a dishwasher. I thought the cleaners would have a bit of a spot check though.

I still don't understand all the cries of not 'doing laundry' on holiday, It's literally pressing a button. Confused

At hotels you send it off to their laundry service. You can put it in the bag outside your door.
Lemoncurd · 22/02/2021 00:53

Since having children I've always selected places with both. If I had to choose, it would definitely be dishwasher.

Having looked at the cost in every hotel I’ve ever stayed in, it would be cheaper to throw it away and replace it! We usually return with clean, unworn clothes. I don’t hand wash dishes at home, I’m absolutely not doing it on holiday.

Me! Putting it into the machine and pressing 'on' does not really equate to doing washing. I am not dragging it down to the river bank for a scrub on a rock and squeezing it through the mangle. Grin

Washing machine. Especially if your target group is families

Lavanderrose · 22/02/2021 00:57

100% dishwasher. Who wants to be doing choices like washing dishes when on holiday!!

LondonStone · 22/02/2021 00:57

@Sparklingbrook I suppose if it’s a smaller let you could ask the cleaner to check glassware and crockery in between guests but I can guarantee no one on this thread would be happy to find something my sister has “washed” on their holiday. 😂 I love her to pieces but she’s not thorough at all!

Lavanderrose · 22/02/2021 01:00

Also it would really put me off knowing that cups, utensils, dishes etr have been hand washed and not put through a dishwasher, particularly in these times.

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2021 01:02

When I had small children I wouldn't book a holiday cottage unless it had a washing machine.

A dishwasher I don't mind doing without.

partyatthepalace · 22/02/2021 01:05

Washing machine or washer drier (or washing machine and heated clothes horse)

Few people do serious cooking on holiday, but the thought of being away with kids plus mud and rain is a horror. If I accidentally booked your cottage without checking you had a washing machine I would be thinking evil things about you.

partyatthepalace · 22/02/2021 01:06

Also you could always fit in a half or tabletop dishwasher if you feel like being extra nice.

rosiejaune · 22/02/2021 01:08

I did not realise there had been such a cultural shift to people not washing up by hand. I have never had a dishwasher, and I never will.

Seems like more hassle than it's worth (loading, adding products to it, unloading, washing things by hand that don't fit/aren't suitable, rewashing things that didn't get clean etc); what is so awful about washing up in a bowl?!

I can't see myself needing a washing machine on holiday either, but if there was one of them, I'd rather it was that.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 01:16

We never had a dishwasher growing up it was the first purchase when I bought my first house and not been without one since.
My parents moved to a house with a dishwasher and use it about once a year. ConfusedConfused

Ours broke and we can't afford to replace it, I wash up about five times a day when I'm not out at work Hmm
