Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Hmm, I usually filter out anywhere without a washing machine when holidaying abroad but that's because I know the clothes will dry in the sun. Have you got space for them to dry when the weather is crap in the UK? On that basis, maybe a dishwasher would be better since so many replies seem to think all families have enough changes of clothes for the whole holiday Hmm.

Dishwasher!

If you don’t then some manky bugger won’t wash the plates and glasses properly and they’ll be sticky and greasy. Yeeuch.

(Although I always make sure there is a dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and full cooking facilities when I book holiday lets)

ElizaLaLa · 22/02/2021 00:08

Can you put a washing machine and a counter top dishwasher? Mount it on a wall.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/02/2021 00:11

Dishwasher
Only once ever needed a washing machine on holiday... And that was a three week holiday.

We camp a lot... And it's the washing up I hate most.

Midlifephoenix · 22/02/2021 00:11

Kids get muddy, have accidents and so on. Dishes are easy to do. Washing machine 100%.

My list of holiday let requirements is extensive too. I have discounted ones before because I didn't like the furniture. Grin

I would definitely want a dishwasher if I went away. I don’t get people who say it’s just as easy to wash up. No it’s fucking not, it’s much easier to have a cupboard to put dirty dishes, and then press a button when it’s full, than it is to stand there fannying around for half an hour washing and drying dishes.

Personally I wouldn’t care about a washing machine. I only ever did washing on holiday once in france, when I was killing time on the last day and it was so hot the clothes would dry really quickly. But I could have easily done without it.

I manage Airbnb places and the only guests who have ever used the washing machine are ones who stay for longer than a week, which is very unusual.

Dishwasher.

On holiday, surely most people will eat a lot of their meals out so a dishwasher isn't that important

  • personally, I think part of the point of self-catering is that you can eat in the holiday home.
scoutingfornarwhals · 22/02/2021 00:13

Dishwasher. There's no way i am washing up dishes on holiday. A washing machine is unnecessary, it waits until we go home.

Pjsandbaileys · 22/02/2021 00:13

I would say dishwasher asa preference. However we quite often hire cottages for surfing/water based holidays and a washing machine is pretty good for towels and wet clothes. So maybe it depends on the type of market you are aiming for.

BackforGood · 22/02/2021 00:13

Dishwasher.
If you did do a load of washing, how are you going to get it dry in a presumably relatively compact holiday let with no tumble dryer ? So you wouldn't do it.

If there were an emergency (sickness etc) then you could find a laundrette, or, potentially (don't know how you feel about it OP?) ask the Op to run a load through to help out - say someone had thown up over the bed or whatever.

Hathertonhariden · 22/02/2021 00:14

If I'm doing washing up or laundry it's not a holiday.

Dishwasher definitely. Assuming this is a UK holiday let, if I ran out of clothes there's always a supermarket to pick up a few cheap bits. If there wasn't a change of bedding available, again supermarket for a cheap replacement. If the kids were sufficiently poorly for this to happen more than once during the stay we'd be going home not doing endless washing.

If you provide a washing machine, how will guests dry clothes if it's raining? Will you have an iron & ironing board? Will you be providing several tea towels to compensate for lack of a dishwasher?

stitchy · 22/02/2021 00:14

Dishwasher, I don't go on holiday to wash up and wouldn't stay somewhere without one. If we were running out of clothes I would rather buy new ones than wash up dishes all week for the sake of having a washing machine.

Dishwasher! Who the hell does washing on holiday??
This.
Lovely1a2b3c · 22/02/2021 00:17

Dishwasher in the kitchen and washing machine in the bathroom? (I know that's what they do in other European countries and it makes sense). It will make a huge difference and mean that you can charge quite a lot more for every booking.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 00:17

The holiday lets I have been in tend to have a washer/dryer, and an airer. I've always got the washing dry.

therocinante · 22/02/2021 00:17

Dishwasher, 100%. Never done laundry on holiday and would prefer not to wash dishes.

PADH · 22/02/2021 00:17

Dishwasher. I've never washed clothes on holiday.

Aebj · 22/02/2021 00:18

Washing machine as I travel light. The few pots and pans we use can easily be washed up as you go along

wellthatsunusual · 22/02/2021 00:18

Washing machine for me, I'd never book somewhere without one unless it was a one night stay. There's no way I'd go on holiday for a week and not need to wash clothes. I'm not dragging masses of clothes away with me when it's easier to take half as much and wash them.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 00:19

Who the hell does washing on holiday??

Me! Putting it into the machine and pressing 'on' does not really equate to doing washing. I am not dragging it down to the river bank for a scrub on a rock and squeezing it through the mangle. Grin

viques · 22/02/2021 00:19

Dishwasher. And please leave a decent supply of dishwasher tablets. I hate it when they have been doled out like sweeties on the single j cloth.

(I always take spare because I am experienced in these things , but am delighted when the owner realises that I am an honest human being who having spent £600 to rent your cottage for a week is not going to steal the extra six dishwashing tablets and three j cloths you have left for my use.)

BlankTimes · 22/02/2021 00:20

Both, definitely.

Cleverpolly3 · 22/02/2021 00:20

Christ what is wrong with these dishwasher snowflakes!!!! GrinI can hand wash dishes
No way on holiday i want to hand wash clothes
As a mother of three young kids i take enough clothes to sink a battleship but ALWAYS need to wash clothes.

RoseMartha · 22/02/2021 00:20
