Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Mad isn't it. Out of every household appliance there possibly is, a dishwasher would come bottom of every list to me. I find it mad people are so reliant on them!
I’m as ‘reliant’ on a dishwasher as I am on a washing machine. They’re both time saving devices. You put the things you need to wash in, and the machine does all the work. Only in the case of the dishwasher, it dries everything, too.

Hand-washing 2-3 load of dishes every day? No thank you. And it’s not even just that. As soon as a meal or snack is finished, the dirty things go straight in the dishwasher, instead of building into an untidy pile on the bench, lurking there, waiting for someone to clean them.

We got our first dishwasher in the late 80s or early 90s, before I left home. As a student, I’ve lived in the odd house without one. To me, they’re as essential in a kitchen as a fridge, oven and washing machine.

I wouldn’t go to a holiday let without the same basic amenities as I have at home.

I’ll freely admit I’m more squeamish about dirty cutlery and crockery than normal people but I can guarantee the people saying washing up multiple plates, pots and pans, knives and forks and utensils only take “a few minutes” leave stuff dirty.

unmarkedbythat · 22/02/2021 17:22

I find hand washing a load of dishes far easier and less time consuming and laborious than hand washing a load of laundry.

And I would find hand-washing 2-3 loads of dishes every day on holiday far more laborious.

I wouldn’t rent somewhere that didn’t have both, but in this case, I’d save the laundry until I got home, so no hand washing.

We kept our dishwasher operating in the middle of an empty room when we were having the kitchen done. Life is too short to wash up by hand when there's a brilliant machine capable of doing it for you, better and more economically, and it dries everything too. It's always the people who don't have one and appreciate the benefits who think they are unnecessary.

I can reassure you that you would not find anything unpleasant in my kitchen because I'm very squeamish too. But I wash everything immediately after use so it genuinely does only take a few minutes. If I left it all to do in one go, then each item would take twice as long.
Neverland2013 · 22/02/2021 17:28

Dishwasher .. Typically I take enough clothes with me so I don’t have to wash any

LondonStone · 22/02/2021 17:30

@wellthatsunusual You’re absolutely right! I’m hand washing at the minute as we don’t have a dishwasher right now and doing it straight away definitely helps. My sister leaves everything until the next morning so everything is all dried on and she really tries to do a good job but it’s not always the best 😬 (no offence to her!)

Five67Eight · 22/02/2021 17:32

Oh God, life is too short. This is why I have a dishwasher (plus I’m sure you’re in the minority in doing this).

Clymene · 22/02/2021 17:52

This is the first ever MN skeevy post I've been able to join in on. I think all the people who wash every item of clothing and every towel after use and change their sheets daily are bonkers.

But crockery and cutlery? Eugh. I'm going to confess that if there is ANY evidence that someone has washed up by hand when I arrive at a holiday place, I put everything in the dishwasher.

I like my crockery squeaky

No. Takes a few minutes.

Sticking them in a machine, sticking the shit in, putting the programe on, stopping up or in until it's finished because it's like a fire hazard then unloading it when it's done is bloody weird.

Washing up as you go, have sink ready for each person to wash their dish etc straight away takes no time at all.

Scary the amount of people who leave these machines unattended while they're on.

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2021 18:17

I’d wash stuff when I get to a let anyway - dishes that is not clothes. Never feel dishwasher gets things clean. Can see that kind of milky dull finish on machine washed stuff. Hand wash all cooking stuff all the way here.

Ewanthescreamsheep · 22/02/2021 18:28

Once we've decided on a suitable location, my two priorities for the actual cottage we book, are parking and a washing machine.

LakieLady · 22/02/2021 18:29

Personally, I am in favour of the clothes washer. Then the solution is to allow guests to bring a dog. For example, a Labrador. After meals just place the used crockery on the kitchen floor. Wait 10 minutes. Then just stack everything back in the dresser and away you go. Problem solved

Grin

And to think I got called disgusting for using my dogs as a pre-wash cycle, prior to putting stuff in the dishwasher!

notanothertakeaway · 22/02/2021 18:38

I never book a holiday house without a dishwasher, mostly for my own convenience, but also to avoid using dishes that someone else has washed by hand (perhaps not very well)

Nith · 22/02/2021 18:41

Who wants a weeks worth of washing to do on returning home?!

I don't see that that's a problem, it's not as if it's that much of a chore with washing machines. I'd rather be doing it at home than when I'm supposed to be relaxing on my holiday.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 22/02/2021 18:45

Dishwasher. Although we had both at last place and the washing machine was useful as we didn't have a weeks worth of clothes.

TangerineGenie · 22/02/2021 18:45

Fridges and freezers are the appliances most likely to start a fire, do you sit and watch them?

You cannot be serious Hmm

pictish · 22/02/2021 18:50

Never has Mumsnet been so divided.
I propose a fight to the death! The washing machines will win because they’re more active, outdoorsy and fit than the lazy dishwashers. 😉

It literally takes 2 seconds to put a load of washing on and like 5 minutes to either put it on an airer or peg it out.

Nah. Really don't. Practice makes perfect see.

That reminds me of the thread years ago where a poster said she always handwashed her knickers in the shower because she thought the washing machine didn't clean well enough and it was grim to use a washing machine for underwear. Bemused was what I was. Bemused.
