Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

I wouldn't rent a holiday cottage without a dishwasher as I do less housework, not more on holidays.

This might be lazy, but I'm struggling with other poster's definition of "holiday" is you should be discouraging laziness...

I've never used a washing machine on a holiday that's less than 10 days, and assume most UK breaks are a week or long weekend, so families will take enough clothes for that time.

Hollyhead · 22/02/2021 09:24

Dishwasher - I wouldn't book somewhere without one whereas a washing machine would be a bonus.

Petitmum · 22/02/2021 09:24

We go away a few times a year self-catering and I will only book places with a washing machine. It is so much easier to be able to wash clothes as you go along and means you don't need to take as much with you.
I hate the idea of having to take a week's worth of clothes and then have to wash it all on returning home. I don't want to go and sit in a laundry on holiday.
I'm happy to use a dishwasher if it's there but it's a nice to have rather than essential............a lot of people only cook simple meals on holiday anyway.

I won’t rent a self catering place without a dishwasher.

I’ve only used a washing machine while self catering once and that was in the middle of a 3 week multi-base holiday & apartment was chosen specially to allow me to wash clothes!

Kokosrieksts · 22/02/2021 09:27

Those who never do washing on a weeks holiday what do you do if your kid jumps in mud on day one or splashes tomato juice over your clothes that will stain if not washed. What if it rains and everything gets soaked? And how about very small babies with poo leaks? Bedding accidents?
I’d hate having a stinky bag of clothes to bring back home to tackle. So much easier to do it straight away.

daisyjgrey · 22/02/2021 09:27

Dishwasher. You can pack more clothes, doing dishes is shit.

Mmr224 · 22/02/2021 09:31

Is there anywhere else you could put a washing machine, such as in bathroom or under stairs so you can have both?

RedcurrantPuff · 22/02/2021 09:32

But then I’ve never owned a dishwasher and really don’t understand why people have seemingly lost the ability to use their hands to wash dishes.

It’s called a “labour saving device” that’s all. Life is too short to spend it stuck at the kitchen sink washing up! We always have tonnes of dirty dishes in this house :(

Nith · 22/02/2021 09:34

@gamerchick

Washing machine. But then I think dishwashers are the height of laziness. Grin Takes a couple of minutes to wash up.
Time yourself. With a family, I guarantee that it takes a whole lot more than a couple of minutes.

When we go self catering, it's strictly on the basis that it's my holiday too and I am doing minimal housework. That means lots of takeaways, or easy things like pasties. And definitely no washing up by hand.

welshladywhois40 · 22/02/2021 09:34

If you are gearing up fir young families - washing machine. We prefer to pack light and wash as we go. We were amazed that centreparcs don't have washing machines.

Plus if it is near a beach we tend to wash our beach towels regularly so they are fresh for the next day.

Rewis · 22/02/2021 09:35

I don't think either is essential.

If it's the type of palace that people rent out for a week or two, then dishwasher. If it's the type of palace people rent from May to August then washing machine.

Racoonworld · 22/02/2021 09:36

I wouldn’t stay in a holiday cottage without both. I thought they were standard everywhere (unless it’s a tent).

LST · 22/02/2021 09:39

100% washing machine

Needmoresleep · 22/02/2021 09:39

Our washer dryer has a 60 minute quick wash/dry cycle. When we go to stay we find we use it most evenings. . It is so nice not to take lots of clothes with us, especially when English weather is so variable, and come home with everything clean. It is worth buying good quality appliances, which are both reliable and have good repair services.

Another agency suggestion was to leave a DVD player and wet weather games. Buy a pile of cheap children’s DVDs at a car boot. Also a smart TV so devices can be plugged in.

It’s wet weather that is the challenge with holidays in the UK. If your target market is families, and bunk beds suggest it is, think through a wet week from their perspective.

Also if there are good agencies in your area, consider using one for your first year till you learn the ropes. Ours is extremely bossy, and won’t take accommodation unless it meets their standards. The mismatching coat hangers would not do. We needed pictures and lamps, etc. A ‘welcome pack’ of sachets of instant coffee, sugar, tea and those long life milk capsules as well as dishwasher and washing tabs, and small shampoos and soap. They will know the local market and what people will expect. Agencies are expensive but a good one earns their money.

@Tankflybosswalkjam

Dishwasher! Who the hell does washing on holiday??
Me. Small load everyday and no washing when you get back.

Just got rid of our dishwasher that was here when we moved in. Never even switched it on.

Theonlyoneiknow · 22/02/2021 09:43

If it was a deal-breaker then dishwasher 100% although would always book somewhere with both. Can you fit in one of those slim space saving dishwashers to help free up space?

CocoPark · 22/02/2021 09:43

Dishwasher every time!!!!

I have never washed clothes on hols, always take enough for the week. But inevitably use cups and plates daily.

Floobydo · 22/02/2021 09:46

Both! I wouldn’t go somewhere without either.

I don’t wash up at home. Why would I want to do more work on a holiday??

PraiseTheSunshine · 22/02/2021 09:48

Mayve a washing machine and a countertop dishwasher if there's room?

Hankunamatata · 22/02/2021 09:49

Table top dishwasher?

Worknoplay · 22/02/2021 09:49

We always go on airBB and will eliminate places with no washing machines.

We go for 2-4 weeks at a time, there's no way that I'd take that many clothes for a family.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 09:50

Dishwasher as take enough clothes not to have to wash .
Plus know all plates etc have been washed properly .

Dryshampooandcoffee · 22/02/2021 09:52

Not having a dishwasher would be frustrating in a holiday let, however if there’s no washing machine and a child has an accident then that’s a real pickle! If it’s in your annex do you have a washing machine you’d let them use in an emergency?

RoomOfRequirement · 22/02/2021 09:52

Reading this feels like I'm in some alternate universe where washing dishes is on the same level of difficulty and as time consuming as brain surgery.

Unless you're cooking a full Sunday roast with all the trimmings, dishes take just a few minutes! It's not that much more effort or time than having to load and reload a dishwasher.

I never used ours when we had it because of that.

A washing machine on the other hand makes a difficult job much easier! Can you get a combination washer/dryer?

C152 · 22/02/2021 09:55

Wow! Surprised so many people would pick a dishwasher over a washing machine. It's much easier to eat out / get a takeaway / ready meal on holiday than to wash your clothes. I'd much rather have a washing machine.
