Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Wow! People are really passionate about this! Thanks so much for all your responses. There is already a kitchen fitted and there is one space...However, as some posters have suggested we could put a washing machine elsewhere. We have a cupboard under the stairs where we could possibly fit one. How can I look at the results of the voting? I can’t see it. Thanks

I bring all the clothes I'll need during a holiday and I wouldn't want to wash clothes while on holiday.
I hate washing pots on holiday.

ElephantsNest · 22/02/2021 09:04

@Five67Eight

But then I’ve never owned a dishwasher and really don’t understand why people have seemingly lost the ability to use their hands to wash dishes.

Probably for the same reason you’ve lost the ability to use your hands to wash your clothes, towels and linen.

I’ve got both at home, but washing up a few plates and mugs is in no way comparable to hand washing and drying clothing!

Basically OP, I think you are going to have to try to include both somehow judging by this thread.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2021 09:05

Quickest way to see the results is to choose YABU/YANBU yourself.

Topseyt · 22/02/2021 09:05

Washing machine got my vote, but increasingly I think it will need both if many people are to give it serious consideration.

So many people have dishwashers in their homes now and most of us no longer consider them a luxury item. They don't want fewer basic facilities when on holiday.

For those saying they just eat out daily on holiday, that is expensive and not an option for all of us.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 22/02/2021 09:05

It looks like there’s enough people who wouldn’t dream of doing washing on holiday that you’ll be able to fill your let without a washing machine. So that along with the hygiene issue of not being dependent on your customers’ dodgy washing up would swing the choice to dishwasher if you really can only have one. However I do think you should look round the whole place with a seeing eye and a tape measure to see if there’s anywhere you can squash in a washing machine. I’ve stayed in holiday let’s where they’ve been in all sorts of funny places, even in bedrooms - when I had to use it I didn’t complain about the odd location.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 09:05

I don’t think people are reading the whole thread now. Grin

Dishwasher vote here. If I was going somewhere for long enough that required washing doing, I'd choose a cottage rather than an annex. Annex sounds mini-breaky to me and I'd much rather be able to put the dishwasher on before heading out for the day.
Also, If there's a dishwasher fitted, there's much less chance CF's will depart leaving a load of pots for you to wash and sort.x

Add your own vote. Then it will show the results.

Dishwasher. But we used to rent cottages from a company who put spin dryers in their properties. Really handy as it's the wringing out of hand washing that is a problem and a spinner takes up little space.

superram · 22/02/2021 09:10

I wouldn’t come without a dishwasher. A washing machine is nice and I’d see if you could fit one upstairs in the bathroom or somewhere else?

lottiegarbanzo · 22/02/2021 09:13

Actually, having voted dishwasher (and it's true I have discounted cottages that don't have them), I would expect to have access to a washing machine too. It's more that there usually is a washing machine but isn't always a dishwasher (though usually is now).

The main reason being bed-wetting children. Other child mess also possible. (On which not you must have waterproof mattress protectors on all beds, not just the bunks, as a child who's unwell might crawl in with their parents).

Sometimes there's been a laundry room for a group of cottages, with pay per wash slots, which is fine.

There is clearly an expectation that people don't really cook on holiday (there's never an adequate range of kitchen equipment) but we do. We like cooking, it's much cheaper than eating out and, with small DC especially, would rather cook what and when we like. Washing up is drudge work though.

But, if you're going to have a dishwasher, you need to supply enough crockery to last a day, three meals. The stupidest thing about most holiday cottages is that you get a dishwasher but only enough plates and bowls for one meal, so either you're constantly running the thing a quarter full and having to be really alert to your future need for crockery, or you have to wash up after every meal anyway.

Keepitnerdy · 22/02/2021 09:13

Get a washing machine and a tabletop dishwasher. I'd always take washing machine I've had some unfortunate accidents on holiday and had to wash horse manure off my clothes in the sink.

dontdillydallytoolong · 22/02/2021 09:15

@ExcusesAndAccusations Thank you. Dishwasher in the lead then!

100% washing machine. I wouldn't consider renting a holiday let that didn't have one.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/02/2021 09:18

@Needmoresleep

We do holiday let’s, mainly to young families. We have both, but our good washer dryer with a good quick wash programme is often welcomed in comments. Small children get wet playing on the beach, they get muddy going for walks, babies have accidents. No way would I want to save it all up for when I got home.
@dontdillydallytoolong

Comments like the one above are the ones worth listening to!

Washing machine wins hands down for me.

Is there anyway to squeeze in a slim line or table top dishwasher?

gamerchick · 22/02/2021 09:18

Washing machine. But then I think dishwashers are the height of laziness. Grin Takes a couple of minutes to wash up.

minipie · 22/02/2021 09:21

Having voted dishwasher...

Are you in a town/large village or middle of nowhere?

If you’re in a town/village with several pubs then people are more likely to be planning to eat out or get takeaways so perhaps dishwasher is less important.

But if you have space for both then definitely do both!

Sirzy · 22/02/2021 09:21

Washing machine would sell it for me. Accidents happen or clothes get covered in mud or whatever and it’s great to have the washer there to Chuck things into

Keepitnerdy · 22/02/2021 09:22

I have a kid now and definitely second a washer dryer for families no way could I carry enough clothes for all of us considering how mucky he gets and accidents.

singsingbluesilver · 22/02/2021 09:23

It depends. If the letting is for a week minimum, for families, and in an area where they are going to be at the beach a lot, or lots of muddy walks, then a washing machine, no contest.

If it's for couples and for lots of shorter term long weeken, Mon - Fri types lets, then a dishwasher.

Myself - I would always prefer a washing machine. That's because I pack light and am not bothered by washing up.

Caspianberg · 22/02/2021 09:23

Bare in mind cleaning afterwards. In our holiday let, we empty all cupboards and pile all crockery and utensils into dishwasher on a hot wash between guests to make sure it’s all super clean. Far easier than washing every item by hand at 65 degrees. A let isn’t just those who stay washing up their breakfast plate by hand, but whoever cleans it has to wash everything just in case. It would take forever

Put a washer dryer under the stairs if you say there’s space, it means you can use for washing laundry from apartment as well if your not sending it out to be cleaned. Biggest you can fit.
