Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Is there an option to put a washing machine somewhere else? A nearby shed/garage/out building that guests could have access to? I’ve stayed at places with this set up and it’s fine. Obviously, inside the cottage is preferable but definitely better than nothing.

PurBal · 22/02/2021 08:31

Without kids: dishwasher. With kids: washing machine. Depends on the target market for the holiday let in my opinion.

Sevensilverrings · 22/02/2021 08:32

Put a washer drier machine in a small shed next to annex? You could store garden furniture there too maybe?
Failing that, offer to take in laundry load?
I wouldn’t book a holiday without a dishwasher, it I’d also really have to love the place to book without washing machine...although we try to take enough.
If your anywhere near beach people may feel more of a need for washing machine though....

Surprised to see so many people saying they don't own a week's worth of clothes. Assuming this is not a poverty issue if you're talking about people who can afford a holiday.

What's the reason to have so few? How often do you do washing? I feel like we would defo all run out if we only had 6 or fewer outfits each. This is probably because I'm a slattern and leave laundry piled up for ages Blush :)

Anyway, I voted dishwasher because personally I find it easier to bring more clothes and take them home. We can't afford to eat out every night on holiday so it's nice not to have to wash up.

pictish · 22/02/2021 08:38

I don’t spend my no dishwasher holiday washing up, we take turns. It’s no biggy. There’s no elaborate meals being prepared on holiday anyway...it’s a combination of simple meals and eating out/fish and chips.

To me this is like offering someone the choice of two items to take on a week away...a toothbrush or a hairdryer. Of course you take the toothbrush.
Washing machine, essential. Dishwasher, preferable.

I’m surprised that the balance has tipped quite firmly on the voting for dishwasher. It doesn’t make sense.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 22/02/2021 08:39

Dishwasher as I have one at home and would not like to stand washing dishes when I'm on holiday. I take enough clothes for the time there for 2 adults and 2 children. I'd rather wash all the clothes when I get home.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2021 08:40

Also thinking about it, when I pack for a week it's not 7x everything either. Usually 7x underwear, 3x trousers, 4x tops, 2x cardi/jumper.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2021 08:40

It's so interesting to see the divide here because everyone feels the answer should be obvious!

It makes perfect sense if you never do any washing on holiday - I don’t. And don’t want to do extra housework on holiday when you don’t even do it at home. In my instance the dishwasher is the toothbrush!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 22/02/2021 08:44

I'd prefer to rent somewhere with both. We stayed in a cottage in Devon that had a washing machine but no dishwasher. I'd have rather had the dishwasher. Who wants to go on holiday and do the washing up daily or twice daily when they don't at home? We then went to a place in the Cotswolds which had a slimline dishwasher and it was much better - somewhere to put the dirty dishes until you are ready to put it on.

HeartShapedMoon · 22/02/2021 08:44

Maybe I'm totally sad but if we go to a villa somewhere hot I spend an hour or so on the last day doing everyone's washing and hanging it up outside where it dries in minutes, so we all go home with clean clothes that can be put away straight away. Love that. No washing mountain on a grey day once home. Plus all your whites get really white if you leave them in the sun for a bit longer!

pictish · 22/02/2021 08:44

Bertie even affluent people won’t have a week’s worth of outdoor kit at their disposal for their holiday. Most have a few items they generally use for this and that and not an inexhaustible supply...decent gear is expensive and beloved. It gets used and washed and used again.

notacooldad · 22/02/2021 08:45

To be honest I could live without either of them.
They don't come in my top 20 of things I need on holiday!

crystalcherry87 · 22/02/2021 08:46

Washing machine. It's hard to take away so many clothes when you're packing for a load of kids. Last time despite packing what seemed enough clothes and towels I ended up going to look for a launderette.

gottakeeponmovin · 22/02/2021 08:49

Dishwasher

yoshiblue · 22/02/2021 08:51

Definitely a washing machine. Has been super handy to wash DS clothes/coat after a muddy walk and he still has wee accidents too.

TBH, I would want both though - it was a shock to the system having to do our own washing up at a place this summer. First world problem!

pictish · 22/02/2021 08:53

When you’ve got kids in tow surely you can only vote for a washing machine?

What about spillages, accidents, illness...the means to wash the bedding alone, never mind the holiday togs?

SmallPrawnEnergy · 22/02/2021 08:55

Washing Machine. Especially if it’s a family friendly let. Spillages on bedding / blankets etc can be a nightmare and being able to fling them into a machine before stains set in will be better for them and you too. But then I’ve never owned a dishwasher and really don’t understand why people have seemingly lost the ability to use their hands to wash dishes.

amylou8 · 22/02/2021 08:55

How long is your average let? A week or less = dishwasher. Over a week = washing machine.

Aprilx · 22/02/2021 08:57

I would really expect to have both in a holiday let, I would possibly book somewhere else because most do. If I had to pick, I would want a dishwasher as there will be dishes to wash every day whereas I could probably get away without washing.

Clymene · 22/02/2021 08:57

Dishwasher. I don't wash dishes by hand at home and I'm not going to start on holiday. I take clothes home because I don't want to be doing laundry on holiday either

Five67Eight · 22/02/2021 08:58

Probably for the same reason you’ve lost the ability to use your hands to wash your clothes, towels and linen.

sakura06 · 22/02/2021 08:59

Dishwasher. Would take enough clothes with me.

Chemenger · 22/02/2021 09:00

Dishwasher. I wouldn’t consider a holiday house without one.

Muskox · 22/02/2021 09:02

Dishwasher. We take enough clothes for a week.
