We know it's "lovely and unusual".

Grin my favourite book in the world. The Hitchcock film is pretty special too.

I think she was a Naomi

I read this for the first time recently and it drove me crazy not knowing!

I take it you don't mean the first Mrs De Winter? Grin.

There are hints in the book that it was a bit unusual or exotic (for the time). Sth to do with spelling it correctly.

Maybe Anastasia or Arabella? Don't know why I'm going with the As...

Notasdesperate · 21/02/2021 20:33

Rebecca?????

Merryoldgoat · 21/02/2021 20:34

I take it you don't mean the first Mrs De Winter?

🤣

I quite like the suggestion of Imogen.

NeverTrustaRabbit · 21/02/2021 20:34

She could be a Caroline, which is why Danvers suggests she dresses as Caroline De Winter (Max's ancestor).

Failing that I imagine her as a Madeline or Lucinda.

poblwcymru · 21/02/2021 20:34

Definitely the second Mrs De Winter (I feel like Mrs Dancers Shock)

I read somewhere that Du Maurier forgot to give her a name but it's too clever for that. It's another nod to her being inconsequential to Rebecca that she's just the narrator of her own story.

According to a biography of Daphne du Maurier, she was a Daphne because D read her husband's previous lover's letters which were signed with an 'R' which was some of the inspiration for Rebecca.

I though Danvers suggested this as Rebecca had worn the same costume and it was a(nother) mind game?

I haven't read it for years- I might need to brush up!

I fought Caroline was a benign cover up for her real name?

LizzieBirmingham · 21/02/2021 20:36

I imagine her as an Esther

KarensChoppyBob · 21/02/2021 20:36

Thought

callingon · 21/02/2021 20:37

Hang on - I spelt it wrong, Lalage. I’ve only ever heard it as the baby’s name in the French Lieutenant’s Woman but I also thing it would work for the second Mrs DeWinter.

NeverTrustaRabbit · 21/02/2021 20:39

@poblwcymru I often wondered if it was a blind clue.

I also think Caroline is one of those beautiful but under appreciated names.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 21/02/2021 20:39

Jonquil. It’s a flower, pretty and unusual.

KarensChoppyBob · 21/02/2021 20:41

Caroline is nice enough but not exotic or hard to spell.
